Matt Damon Is Casting Frances McDormand

20 December 2011 7:37 AM, PST | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

Okay, so it doesn't have quite the same ring to it as "I'm f**king Matt Damon!" but, really, what does?

That Matt Damon has had a heckuva year. He lost a wife to a horrible virus that caused victims to seize up and foam at the mouth ("Contagion"), he bought a zoo (uh, "We Bought a Zoo"), he talked a lot of trash about the Bourne franchise in GQ, and his long-awaited film "Margaret" caused a stir among fans and critics who fought the studio for a wider release.

Now Damon has revealed his first casting pick for his directorial debut, and it's a goodie. Frances McDormand, who won an Oscar for performance as a pregnant crime-solving cop in "Fargo," is the first official cast member in the currently unnamed project.

McDormand's pedigree is as impressive and interesting as Damon's; she's a regular in the Coen brothers' movies (she »

Happy 54th Birthday, Steve Buscemi! What's His Most Underrated Screen Moment?

13 December 2011 7:20 AM, PST | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it's safe to say that Steve Buscemi is one of the most universally liked actors of this generation. He vivified Fargo, gave Ghost World a soul, lent Big Fish some quirky sincerity, ruled on 30 Rock (and Boardwalk Empire, I suppose), and even proved himself a viable proxy for Paul Lynde as the voice of Templeton in the Charlotte's Web remake. That's not an easy sneer to fill. But today we're talking about Buscemi's underrated work, the stuff that doesn't percolate with the grim vigor of a Coen Brothers classic. What's your pick? »

'Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters' Revenge is a B*Tch!

The film is directed by Tommy Wirkola (Dead Snow) written by Dante Harper and stars Jeremy Renner (The Town, Gemma Arterton (Clash of the Titans) and Peter Stormare (Fargo). We all know the story of Hansel and Gretel but what ever happened to the kids after they were kidnapped. 'Saturday Night Live': Steve Buscemi's uncomfortably funny promos

30 November 2011 3:58 PM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

In a new set of promos released by NBC, Steve Buscemi and Bill Hader ham it up to promote Saturday's (Dec. 3) upcoming "Saturday Night Live." Buscemi hosts and, as he repeats several times in the clip above, the Black Keys will be the musical guest.

Buscemi, the star of HBO's "Boardwalk Empire" and pretty much indie film royalty brings his own offbeat vibe to the promo process. In one, Hader asks him how he got his role in "Fargo."

"The Coen brothers saw me kill a man once and grind him up in a wood chipper and said, 'We have a part that's similar," says Buscemi.

In another he chases an animated turkey, mumbling about still having Thanksgiving scores to settle. In another, he and Hader get into a pretend fight about global warming. Finally, and we hate to mention it, Buscemi and Hader add a third person (of sorts »

Blood Simple Blu-ray MGM Home Entertainment 1984/Rated R/Running Time 99 mins List Price: $19.99 – Now Available   Filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen have spent the last 27 years flaunting traditional movie storytelling with such quirky fare as Raising Arizona, the Oscar-winning Fargo and No Country For Old Men and O Brother, Where Art Thou? 1984's Blood Simple is not only the film that put the writer/director siblings on Hollywood’s radar, but remains one of their best nearly thirty years after its release. The film concerns Texas bar owner Julian Marty (Dan Hedaya), stewing over the recently discovered infidelity of his wife Abby (Frances McDormand) with bartender Ray (John Getz). Clip joint: Watching TV

Clip joint goes square-eyed over the best TV watching clips in film

"It's got so bad that I've started to notice, the people on TV? ... Half the time they're watching TV."

A charming young man by the name of Kevin says these words in the trailer for Lynne Ramsay's brilliant new film. I'm not saying I agree with all of Kevin's opinions, but on this subject he does have a point.

TV-watching has become so common an activity that people can do it almost subconsciously. Everyone watches TV, even the characters we're watching. Yet their viewing is always a bit more exciting than ours. We watch TV to relax, but film characters always have a lot more at stake; often it's a breaking news report of some impending disaster. With them it's never just the Strictly results. This makes the following question all the more pertinent – to borrow from »

French filmmaker Xavier Gens' ('Frontiere(s)') new post-apocalyptic thriller 'The Divide' is set to hit Us theatres on 13 January 2012. This isn't fresh news but just exactly what version of the film that'll be entering theatres most definitely is. Anchor Bay have announced that Gens' full, unrated directors cut will be the edition that'll arrive in theatres early next year which is very encouraging. The footage omitted from various festival screenings over the Summer has been described by many as extreme. The movie itself set inside a high-rise apartment in New York city deals with 9 strangers thrown together in this post-apocalyptic nightmare and having to deal with ever-growing tensions and trying to come to terms with what horrors are occurring outside. ‘Captain America’ Writers Talk Michael Bay’s ‘Pain and Gain’; Further Details on ‘Captain’ Sequel Emerge

25 October 2011 1:53 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Last week’s rumors indicated that Michael Bay is, despite previous comments, making a return to the Transformers franchise for a fourth and fifth movie, which would be shot back-to-back. If you ask Bay, however, those aren’t true; instead, the director — primarily known for his massive action spectacles — will be going small-scale next with Pain and Gain, something he describes as both “a very quick shoot and quite funny.”

A script has already been written by Captain America scribes Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus, and they managed to spill some information on the project to ThePlaylist. Saying that they’re “cautiously optimistic,” there seems to be an agreement between them that this will probably be his next project.

But, what caught my eye was their comparison to Fargo; the story, based on an actual event chronicled in The Miami New Times, follows two bodybuilders who get caught up in extortion and kidnapping, »

Ethan Coen, Elaine May and Woody Allen's "Relatively Speaking"

21 October 2011 5:44 AM, PDT | MUBI | See recent MUBI news »

"Mothers come in for some serious savaging in Relatively Speaking, a reasonably savory tasting platter of comedies by Ethan Coen, Elaine May and Woody Allen that opened on Thursday night at the Brooks Atkinson Theater," writes Charles Isherwood in the New York Times, which ran May's interview with Coen and Allen last week. "Old-fashioned boulevard comedy — bright, easygoing fare that doesn't require the deciphering of plummy or crummy British accents — has more or less evaporated from the Broadway marketplace since the heyday of Neil Simon. Relatively Speaking brings back this once-popular genre in manageable bite-size portions, provided by starry showbiz names who sometimes seem to be channeling Mr Simon's gag-driven style. These plays are not going to do anything much in the way of reputation burnishing for their three celebrated authors — and certainly none is required — but they are packed with nifty zingers and have been directed by John Turturro »
