“Watch The Queen Conquer” – Margot Robbie Cast As Queen Elizabeth I in ‘Mary Queen of Scots’

23 April 2017 7:00 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Move over, “Reign” (sorry, CW!), there’s a new adaptation of the historical Mary Stuart vs. Queen Elizabeth I royal feud in town.

Margot Robbie is in talks to play Queen Elizabeth I opposite Saoirse Ronan (“Brooklyn”) as Mary Stuart in Focus Features and Working Title’s “Mary Queen Of Scots.” Josie Rourke (“The Vote,” “Saint Joan”) is set to direct, with Working Title stalwarts Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner and Liza Chasin (“Fargo,” “Atonement,” “The Theory Of Everything”) to produce.

The Tao of Nicolas Cage: ‘Raising Arizona’

21 April 2017 12:51 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

30 years ago Cage teamed up with the Coen Brothers to create comedy gold. Why haven’t they reunited since?“That sumbitch. You tell him, I think he’s a damn fool, Ed. You tell him I said so — H.I. McDonnough. If he wants to discuss it, he knows where to find me: in the Maricopa County Maximum Security Correctional Facility For Men State Farm, Road Number 31, Tempe, Arizona! I’LL Be Waitin’! I’ll be waitin’.”

Earlier this week the Coen Brothers’ screwball comedy Raising Arizona turned 30, which is pretty absurd, but whatever. Since the film did celebrate this recent anniversary I figure it’s as good a time as any to talk about what is my favorite Nicolas Cage movie.

Raising Arizona is one of those movies where the stars just come together and align perfectly; at least as far my personal tastes are concerned. Favorite actor? Check. Favorite »

Stranger Than Fiction: The Truthiness of ‘Fargo’

20 April 2017 2:51 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

“You don’t have to have a true story to make a true story movie.”

Noah Hawley’s acclaimed midwestern crime anthology Fargo returns to FX this week, along with my enthusiasm for saying oh yah and you betcha to anyone with the gall to speak to me when I would rather be watching Fargo. In my defence there are not one, but two, gloriously bad Ewan McGregor wigs. Truly, Hawley is doing the Lord’s work. Season three is set in the not too distant past of 2010, and follows the tried-and-true template of a ridiculously stacked ensemble of endearing (and woefully misguided) ne’er do wells gradually bungling their way into a shit show of their own design. As with each of the previous installments, least of all the Coen Brothers’ original 1996 film, the opening of this week’s episode features the following superimposed text:

This is a true story. The »

'Fargo': A Guide to the Show's Coen Brothers' References

20 April 2017 6:48 AM, PDT | Rollingstone.com | See recent Rolling Stone news »

There's a moment early in the new season premiere of the FX crime drama Fargo when a parole officer recalls how he met his fiancée, a slick hustler named Nikki Swango (played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead). As the episode flashes back to Nikki at a police station, getting booked and photographed, fans of filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen might experience some deja vu. The situation, the way it's shot, and even the way the crook gets yanked around by the authorities – it's all right out of the Coens' 1987 comedy Raising Arizona. »

'Fargo' Season Premiere Recap: The Stamp Act

19 April 2017 8:30 PM, PDT | Rollingstone.com | See recent Rolling Stone news »

Quick question: At any given point during the first five minutes of Fargo's Season Three premiere – "The Law of Vacant Places" – did anybody else worry that FX was accidentally airing the wrong show?

After a trippy opening shot looks like a leftover from Noah Hawley's other FX runaway-hit show Legion, we're dropped into East Berlin circa 1988, for a scene that could easily be an outtake from The Americans (albeit with more deadpan comedy and less espionage). For a little while, we're about as far from Minnesota as we can get. »

There’s a Script for a ‘Deadwood’ Film; Your Move, HBO

19 April 2017 9:01 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Will we ever get the closure we deserve?

The Deadwood movie is pretty much HBO’s version of Chinese Democracy. Fans of David Milch’s swear-laced western drama have been clamoring for a resolution to the series ever since it ended abruptly after its third season way back in 2006, and for years now producers and cast have kept this dream alive by teasing the idea of a feature film to wrap things up. But that’s all it’s really been, a tease. Seems like once a year there’s an obligatory update about how everyone’s still interested — cast, crew, creator and network — and a vague promise that any day now the ball will get rolling. Late last year we received the most promising news yet from series lead Ian MacShane, who reported that Milch was ready to write and the cast was prepping for returns to their roles. Great news »

'Fargo': FX's Coen-verse Crime Thriller Doubles Down on Cracked Genius

17 April 2017 7:25 AM, PDT | Rollingstone.com | See recent Rolling Stone news »

Early on in the excellent new Fargo season, a down-and-out Minnesota chump makes a clumsy yet furious demand: "Are you gonna do what's right here, or are you gonna do what's right?" Bold prediction: Nobody here is going anywhere near what's right. The hotly awaited third chapter of Noah Hawley's groundbreaking FX anthology crime thriller is another snow noir in the Midwestern wastelands, full of cripplingly polite crooks just one you-betcha away from getting clubbed over the head. Everybody smells easy money – which means everybody is a target.

Pop TV Scoops Up Swedish Dicks, Private Investigators With Keanu Reeves

13 April 2017 2:25 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Ardent John Wick fans will remember the moment in which Keanu Reeves and Peter Stormare shared the screen in Chapter 2, when the latter plays Viggo’s snarling brother Abram Tarasov. But the pair’s history stretches back further still to Swedish Dicks, Private Investigators, the single-camera comedy series in which Reeves features in his first major TV role.

Having premiered via Viaplay first, we now have confirmation that Pop TV has swooped in to acquire the property as part of its robust slate of new original programming. Also starring comedian Johan Glans as an aging ex-stuntman, Swedish Dicks, as the name suggests, chronicles the story behind an L.A.-based private detective firm. Stormare dreamed up the idea back in 2014, and two years later the show had developed enough of a cult following to warrant a second season, with Keanu Reeves on board in a recurring capacity.

A totem of godly visions we didn’t know we needed to worship until they showed us the light with this clarion call to the American Gods.”

Trailer Watch: Frances McDormand Takes on the Police in “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”

27 March 2017 10:02 AM, PDT | Women and Hollywood | See recent Women and Hollywood news »

“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, M

“What’s the law on what you can and cannot say on a billboard?” Frances McDormand asks in a newly released Red Band trailer for “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.” The Oscar winner plays Mildred, a woman whose daughter was murdered seven months prior. As her question suggests, she’s not looking to put up a typical billboard — she doesn’t want a supersized photo of her late child, or details about a reward. Mildred is planning on using the advertising space to critique the local police, who have yet to find the culprit.

As the film’s official synopsis details, Mildred decides go ahead and make the bold move, “painting three signs leading into her town with a controversial message directed at William Willoughby (Woody Harrelson), the town’s revered chief of police. When his second-in-command Officer Dixon (Sam Rockwell), an immature mother’s boy with a penchant for violence, gets involved, the battle between Mildred and Ebbing’s law enforcement is only exacerbated.”

“It seems to me the police department is too busy torturing black folks to solve actual crimes,” Mildred tells a journalist in the spot. This is not the kind of person who worries about making enemies. The hilarious Nsfw trailer shows Mildred verbally — and physically — attacking those who stand in her way. This seems like an amazing role for McDormand, who can communicate what an insufferable moron she thinks someone is using only her eyes.

McDormand won an Oscar in 1997 for “Fargo.” Her recent credits include “Hail, Caesar!” “Olive Kitteridge,” and “Moonrise Kingdom.”

The “Almost Famous” actress has identified the “main point” of feminism as “equal pay for equal work,” which has yet to be realized in the film world. “I haven’t been given that,” McDormand revealed at a Cannes event in 2015. She admitted that she’s only met her quote once — on “Transformers 3” — and still, it was less than an actor in her league would have made. “I worked very hard for that money, I’m very proud of my work. I’m glad I did that film, and I’m proud that I finally got paid what I was told I was worth by the industry,” she explained. “But that is nothing. That is a tenth of what most males my age, with my experience and my reputation as a film actor, make. We’ve never been paid commensurately, and that has to change,” she emphasized.

Written and directed by Martin McDonagh (“In Bruges,” “Seven Psychopaths”) “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” is expected to hit theaters this year. No word on a specific release date yet.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri Spark Havoc In First Red Band Trailer

23 March 2017 10:59 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri spark widespread havoc in the fantastic red band trailer for Martin McDonagh’s starry crime thriller.

Headed up by Frances McDormand as Mildred Hayes, Three Billboards is a black comedy and proud of it, with enough cussing and shenanigans to warrant an R rating ten times over. Directing from his own script, McDonagh’s latest creative venture orbits around Mildred Hayes, who takes it upon herself to raise awareness for her daughter’s murder case months after it was willfully tossed to the side by the local police department. The result is, well, three rather incendiary billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri that in turn spur the police force into action. Thrust into the midst of that storm is Chief William Willoughby (Han Solo star Woody Harrelson), who struggles to keep a lid on things once Hayes’ campaign for justice begins to take hold.

Leave it to FX’s Fargo series to round together an enviable cast in anticipation of its new season.

Now teetering on the verge of its third outing on the airwaves, FX’s anthology series – one that blends crime, drama and black comedy in a way that only Joel and Ethan Coen’s beloved original could – has amassed a collection of prestigious awards, including Emmys for Oustanding Miniseries and, in the case of Fargo‘s inaugural season, Outsanding Casting. Billy Bob Thornton, Allison Tolman and Sherlock‘s Martin Freeman were among those actors who helped launch Noah Hawley’s anthology series, but come April 19th, the torch will be passed over to Mary Elizabeth Winstead (10 Cloverfield Lane), Michael Stuhlbarg, David Thewlis (Harry Potter) and Ewan McGregor(s).
