Examining Hollywood Remakes: The Blob

25 April 2016 12:18 AM, PDT | Cinelinx | See recent Cinelinx news »

Our series on big-screen remakes continues with a cult horror film that kickstarted the illustrious career of Steve McQueen. This week, Cinelinx looks at The Blob (1958 vs. 1988).  Come inside to see how these two films stack up.

The original version of The Blob was a low-budget monster film made for $110,000. The titular creature was originally supposed to be called The Molten Meteor Monster, which then was changed to The Mass, which turned into The Glob, and Finally The Blob. The film's tongue-in-cheek title song was written by Burt Bacharach and Mack David, which became a hit. The movie was directed by Irvin Yeaworth who specialized in directing motivational educational and religious films, so this was a departure for him. The film was a moderate success, grossing over $4 million, although the critics weren’t overly kind. It has a 67% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite its cheesiness, its reputation has grown over »

‘I Am Wrath’ Review

Stars: John Travolta, Christopher Meloni, Rebecca De Mornay, Amanda Schull, Sam Trammell, Doris Morgado, Luis Da Silva Jr., Patrick St. Esprit | Written by Yvan Gauthier, Paul Sloan | Directed by Chuck Russell

And while it was less successful and entertaining than Taken, From Paris With Love was still good fun.

So in theory then, given Travolta is – or at least was – capable of convincingly taking part in a action movie I had reasonable expectations for his latest film I Am Wrath. And then there’s the crew involved: directed by Chuck Russell whose past works include Eraser, The Mask, and The Blob; and starring Rebecca De Mornay and Christopher Meloni, I honestly thought »

9 March 2016 11:21 AM, PST | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

A couple years back, an actor who doesn't always get much respect popped up in what looked like a low-rent thriller, only to have that movie turn out to be awesome. The star was Keanu Reeves, and the action vehicle was "John Wick." Can "I Am Wrath" do the same for John Travolta? Judging by this first trailer, it's not likely. Read More: Review: 'The Forger' Starring John Travolta Is A Tiresomely Average Thriller Directed by Chuck Russell ("The Mask," "Eraser," "The Scorpion King"), and co-starring Christopher Meloni, Sam Trammell, Amanda Schull, Asante Jones, Luis Da Silva Jr., Paul Sloan, Patrick St. Esprit and Rebecca De Mornay, the story follows an ordinary man who goes on the warpath after his wife is brutally murdered and the system fails to bring the culprits to justice. Here's the synopsis:  Unemployed engineer Stanley Hill (Travolta) witnesses the brutal murder of his wife Vivian (Rebecca De Mornay, »
