The historical epics set to besiege your cinema

24 November 2010 4:46 AM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Get your swords and sandals ready – there’s a legion of historical epic movies on the way. Here’s Ti’s round-up…

Since Ridley Scott resurrected the swords and sandals genre with Gladiator in 2000, the historical epic has grown more and more popular. With massive budgets, thousands of extras and battle scenes that try to top each other year after year, the historical epic has become a regular feature in cinemas over the last ten decade, with Troy, Kingdom Of Heaven, Alexander, Robin Hood, Mongol, 300, King Arthur, The Last Legion, Pathfinder, Beowulf, Elizabeth: The Golden Age, and Clash Of The Titans all vying for our attention.

This year is no different, and with Michael Mann rumoured to be directing an adaptation of Bernard Cornwall's account of the Battle of Agincourt, Sharpe, it looks set to continue. We've already seen the likes of Robin Hood, Solomon Kane, Centurion, Clash Of The Titans, »

Encountering Spielberg: A Steven Spielberg Profile (Part 4)

21 September 2010 11:14 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Trevor Hogg profiles the career of legendary Hollywood filmmaker Steven Spielberg in the fourth of a five part feature... read parts one, two and three.

Collaborating with co-director Douglas Day Stewart (Listen to Me), filmmaker Steven Spielberg produced a ninety-minute video release called The Visionary (1990). The Western centres around a psychiatrist who skeptically recruits the services of an Indian medicine man to heal the troubled relationship between an American Native Indian and his wife.

A modern-day retelling of a classic children’s tale by British playwright J.M. Barrie was the next theatrical release for Spielberg. Hook (1991) stars Robin Williams (One Hour Photo) as the middle-aged Peter Pan who must return to Neverland in order to rescue his kidnapped son and daughter from the clutches of his pirating archenemy Captain Hook (Dustin Hoffman). “When I was eleven years old, I, along with other kids, directed a shorten version of Peter Pan in my elementary school, »

If Ian McKellen Leaves 'The Hobbit,' Who Could Replace Him As Gandalf The Grey?

6 July 2010 12:58 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

As we reported earlier, Sir Ian McKellen might be following former "The Hobbit" director Guillermo Del Toro on his way out of The Shire. Now, if Hollywood has taught us anything, it's that we should always prepare for the worst -- you never know when a zombie epidemic is going to break out, after all. While the loss of the once and hopefully future Gandalf isn't likely to turn the legions of "Lord of the Rings" fans into mindless, flesh-eating monstrosities, the departure of the man who defined the role of the wise old wizard might very well prove disastrous for the film's future.

But worry not. On the off chance that McKellen decides to bow out, we've come up with a few replacements who might be able pick up the staff, slip on the pointy hat and make sure that "The Hobbit" comes to pass. Hit the jump for more! »

Learn 'How To Train Your Dragon' From These Five Movie Dragons!

26 March 2010 11:28 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Depending on whether or not you're heading to movie theaters this weekend, you might learn a little something or two about "How To Train Your Dragon." In all likelihood, you're not going to encounter too many fire-breathing winged beasts in your life — I would hope not, anyway — but in case you do, DreamWorks' latest 3-D animated feature should teach you a couple of tricks on how to tame such a mythical creature.

But if you have plans that prevent you from heading to the local cinema in the near future, never fear — there are plenty of other films that have already laid out a few lessons on how to train your pet dragon, or at least how to avoid getting killed by one!

After the jump, check out some of the lessons we've learned from other cinematic dragons.

Top 7 Awesome Dragon Movies

24 March 2010 3:13 PM, PDT | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

We start the Top 7. You finish the Top 10.

I like a good dragon movie as much as the next girl.  But what I really love is an Awesome dragon movie.  You know, with mayhem and death and revenge against bullies. All of these movies feature awesome dragon moments.  They’re also movies where the dragon plays a pivotal role in the film; I left out the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings movies because the dragons are more incidental. With the opening of How to Train Your Dragon on March 26, it seems like a good time to look back on some of the best dragon-y dragons in the history of cinema.

This wonderful modern take on a fairy tale features an awesome climactic ending with the main villain turning into a dragon and chasing Patrick Dempsey up the side of the Woolworth Building in New York. Horror at the Oscars Part 2: This Time It's Personal

9 March 2010 12:49 AM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Horror fanatics are still buzzing like chainsaws over the Academy Awards’ genre montage. Anywhere there could be a conversation about it online, there was one. Many were upset over the Twilight ‘tweens’ participation, as if their mere presence sent a message about the state of scary in Hollyweird, USA.

A few seemed happy, though, to just get a glimpse of their beloved Evil Dead and Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 if only for a few seconds. But many called the selections generic and thoughtless, demanding the likes of Demons and TerrorVision instead (well, maybe not TerrorVision; that was just me).

How about Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer? Re-Animator? It’s Alive? Tombs of the Blind Dead? Coffin Joe? No list is perfect, but with a bit more care and a phone call to any one of us, the Oscars could have elevated that section into a real scream. Or maybe they »

Horror at the Oscars Part 1: The Quickening

8 March 2010 1:54 AM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

It’s that time of year again, kids. Dread Central’s 2010 Horror at the Oscars coverage. Horror was indeed present this year and in black-tie. While Roger Corman and Lauren Bacall were honored a few months back at the Governor’s Award Ceremony, it was an unexpected delight to see Corman, recipient of the lifetime achievement Oscar, enjoy a standing ovation on national television.

I was, however, very disappointed that neither of them were allowed to speak. Roger Corman’s contributions to modern cinema are too vast for him to just stand up and wave. James Cameron was one of many Corman acolytes present, and his nomination speaks to Corman’s tremendous legacy. On the Terminator DVD Cameron mentions, "I trained at the Roger Corman Film School.” Jonathan Demme, Martin Scorsese, and Francis Ford Coppola, among many others, were also former students.

The terror continued with a spoof of Paranormal Activity »
