The weak link in the series, but still not bad
22 November 2010 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

Some legends never die, they just keep finding new ways to come back. Of course in some cases we wish they'd just stay dead and buried. By the time a series gets to a certain number things become stale and maybe they went one too far. The original 'Night of the Demons' was a hit with Horror fans and made enough money to warrant a sequel, which too did well and three years after that came number 3. But unlike it's predecessors it would never get a theatrical release and was shot in Canada instead of LA. You know what that means, it was made on the cheap and as a result is the least of the franchise. But after all is said and done it's still worth watching.

Pros: Though the animation is dated, the opening titles sequence is kind of cool. A pretty good score, which includes an updated version of the original's main theme. Aside from a few off moments, the performances are fine. Imaginative script by Kevin Tenney, who should have been the director too. Decent make-up effects and some cool new demons. Quick paced. Continues the series tradition of having a sense of humor and a good one too. A few standout sequences.

Cons: Cheap looking visual effects. Apart from a few nice shots, the direction is bland. The low budget shows in the film's look, which is less cinematic than the first two. Plus they recycle footage of Angela floating down the hallways again. Plot wears thin by the second half, which consists mostly of characters becoming demons and chasing after others. Once again the characters are stereotypes. Also some things from the original are repeated and less effectively.

Final thoughts: All things considered 'Night of the Demons 3' really isn't such a bad movie or installment in the series. The problems lie mainly with the budget and direction. They really ought to have let Kevin Tenney, who did a really good job on the original, take the director's chair on this one. But his involvement period helps a lot in keeping this one afloat. A fun sequel with some competency, but it really could and should have been better.

My rating: 3/5
