Bang bang you're dead!
castelli5 April 2001
The plot is totally predictable, for example what do mafia bosses have swimming pools for if not to catch flying corpses during a shootout? Is America really full of abandoned warehouses where criminals can run riot with firearms? By the way where are the cops in this film, were they on strike, or did they wisely decide to keep a low profile and let the mafiosi get on with blasting each other to bits? The baddies were just too thick to be credible! But this does provide some of the few laughs in this film. The quality of the acting is hardly worth commenting on and Tonya Harding should have stuck to ice skating.

Gorgeous, leggy Teri Thomson does her best to salvage this cheap time-waster
gridoon202415 July 2019
OK, the cinematography is ugly, the music is of the generic elevator variety, the supporting cast is terrible (Joe Estevez plays an elite hitman....nuff said). But when Teri Thomson and her loooooong legs fill the screen, none of that other stuff matters. Unfortunately, this strong woman in the first half of the movie needs to be rescued (repeatedly) by men in the seccond half 🙄 ** out of 4.

should have been called "this flick really sucks "
moviemeister113 April 2004
this horrible piece of celluloid flotsam should have never been released,as it is unfit for anyone.nothing of this film is watchable.the plot is beyond inane, the stunts are trite and predictable, the acting:nevermind, there is no acting.ive seen better acting in kindergarten christmas pageants.the best thing about it is the directors total disregard for rational process.the mob is portrayed as a group of "keystone"crooks who are not only complete idiots, but are absolutely the worst marksmen on the planet.the actors perform actions without any motivation at all(except for the fact that it was "in the script").the only character that is halfway interesting is joe estevez, playing the protagonist/antihero/christfigure.even the costumer was an absolute zero.the main character starts out in this pirate shirt w/hotpants business suit which looks like something you would wear to an all you can eat lobsterfest.my advice about this movie:stay the hell away.save your sanity, save your money, save your soul.

Great idea, boring direction
wolfhell888 April 2002
The script and the idea of this movie are really great but the directing of Sean Dash is boring. The light and the cut is also not the best and the whole movie needs a little more tempo. But that's all forgiven and forgotten when Joe Estevez appears. He plays the cool killer Grey, who is hired to kill Myra, the heroine of this movie. His appearances are worth to watch the whole show. After he is doublecrossed a few times he changes the fronts and helps Myra. Teri Thompson, beautiful and with long and neverending sexy legs, plays Myra and she is another reason to watch this movie.

If you only...
bunchofsavages24 September 2018
If you only see one made-for-VHS action movie featuring Tonya Harding, Martin Sheen's brother and the single greatest use of a puffy shirt of all time - this year, make it this film. Whatever it's called.

Not an homage to the sixties, this is the real thing!
SanDiego21 March 2000
A female Mafia courier attempts to retire but is double-crossed by her boyfriend and she ends up having to dodge a hitman. The boyfriend gets his second girlfriend involved by stashing his first girlfriend's money in her apartment. This is a fast moving and fun movie in the best and trashiest Saturday afternoon matinee way. While Quentin Taratino makes homages to sixties pop culture, this film embraces and lives it. Tonya Harding plays the second girlfriend Gina with freshness, zest, and sex appeal. Tonya Harding steals every scene.

Got to Love Tonya!
tarbosh220004 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Myra Styles (Thompson) is a courier for a mobster named Anton (Ray Dash). Tired of running bags of money all over L. A. only to have to defend herself against the city's finest dirtbags, she tells Anton she wants out. She should have known it wouldn't be that easy. Either by accident or design, she ends up with the money she was supposed to have delivered on her last run. At first, Anton just sends his workaday goons after her, but she was too smart and slick for them, and then the big gun is called in: a ruthless hitman named Grey (Estevez) is now on her trail as well. How does Gina (Harding) fit into all this? And will Myra finally make her ultimate BREAKAWAY?

In the vein of other DTV outings such as Point Doom, Money To Burn, The Stranger, and Fast Money, Breakaway may not have a high IQ but it does entertain. Just to sidestep the elephant in the room, yes, Tonya Harding is front and center here. While The Academy may have snubbed her that year for Best Supporting Actress, she'll always be the winner in our hearts. Just the fact that she's a cast member of Breakaway sets it apart and makes it something special. All her scenes are great (you actually get more Tonya than we were expecting), and you even get some Tonya-Fu. You could argue that she stole the show (or, rather, skated away with it).

There are warehouse fights, chases, shooting, beat-ups, and a very PM-esque car explosion. Myra also walks away from a blow-up in classic style. It does deliver the 90's-style action, and has plenty of humor along the way. There are some stereotypical gangsters that love to play basketball, characters with baggy pants, and it all seems to get dumber as it goes along. That could be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on your point of view. It more or less worked for us, however.

You don't want to get on Anton's bad side. In a fit of rage, he smashes his fax machine. A more 90's expression of rage might not be possible. You have to wait 34 minutes to get to Joe Estevez, but what Joe Estevez you get is quality Joe Estevez. Estevez. Teri Thompson is a worthy tough-gal to handle all the baddies coming after her. In its own low budget way, it all kind of prefigures John Wick.

As long as you don't take it all so seriously (and why would you?), you'll likely have a good time watching Breakaway. If not, there's a scene with Tonya Harding right around the corner.

It's not perfect
Knight Of The Cross21 August 1999
Actually, I like action where is too much gun shots. And "Breakaway" is one of these movies. But I can't say that I like this one. This movie spoiled the terrible Tonya Hardings' act. And Teri Thompson acted her part not better than Tonya. There're only two good things in "Breakaway" that's director's work and the plot. And if instead of Teri Thompson and Tonya Harding were another, more skilled, actresses. This movie will be much better.
