8 Exciting Trans Filmmakers Shaking Up Hollywood

8 Exciting Trans Filmmakers Shaking Up Hollywood
When Lana and Lilly Wachowski, the visionary sibling directors of “The Matrix” and “Sense8, came out as transgender, it was a boon for trans filmmakers everywhere. Suddenly, the Wachowskis’ entire canon of influential science fiction, fantasy (and even “Bound,” their one explicitly queer film) could be seen through a whole different lens. The news turned “The Matrix” into a metaphor for eschewing the gender binary, “Bound” could comfortably be claimed as a lesbian film made by a lesbian, and they were free to make “Sense8” as unabashedly inclusive as they wanted.

So: How many trans directors can you name besides the Wachowskis?

Keanu Reeves would be open The Matrix 4, if the Wachowskis were directing

Out and about on the promotional rounds for his hit action sequel John Wick: Chapter 2, Keanu Reeves has been chatting to Yahoo! Movies about whether he’d be open to reprising the role of Neo for a fourth Matrix movie.

“The Wachowskis would have to be involved,” said Reeves. “They would have to write it and direct it. And then we’d see what the story is, but yeah, I dunno, that’d be weird, but why not?”

Neo was of course killed at the conclusion of the third movie The Matrix Revolutions, but as Reeves went on to note, “People die, people in stories don’t.”

Would you like to see Reeves reuniting with the Wachowskis for a fourth Matrix film? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…

Sense8: A Christmas Special Review

More than most, Lana and Lilly Wachowski have had quite the rollercoaster career in Hollywood. The duo first broke through with the low-budget neo-noir drama Bound in 1996 to much critical acclaim, before The Matrix would cement the writing/directing duo as a household name. That film, of course, emerged as a phenomenon and kept the Wachowskis busy with two live-action sequels, a direct-to-dvd animated anthology, video games and assorted other media. However, perhaps due to the lacklustre legacy The Matrix franchise left in its wake (the original film remains a classic, thankfully), the Wachowskis have developed into some of the most divisive filmmakers working today.

Aside from their writing and producing work on the 2006 film adaptation of V for Vendetta, the duo has been behind some of the most polarizing – and disappointing, from a box office perspective – releases in recent memory. Remember that neon-colored Speed Racer film? Theirs. What about

Famous celebrities who play poker as well as the pros

Poker is fast becoming one of the most popular casino games with the online community growing on a yearly basis, TV coverage also expanding at a rapid pace, and lots of celebrities getting in on the act and enrolling in tournaments across the planet. We though that we would take a look at this in a little greater detail and pick four celebrities who you will know who probably play poker better than most of us, some as good as the pros.

We’ll kick things of with one of the best actors and now directors in the business. Current Batman Ben Affeck is one hell of a card player who not only likes a game of poker, but also delves into the odd blackjack game or two. Both Affleck and his Good Will Hunting co-star, co-writer and all-round best mate Matt Damon, have also been known to enter the

Noirvember: "Bound" (1996)

by Chris Feil

It's worth remembering that while the Wachowski's career has been defined by The Matrix and to a lesser extent their following sci-fi films, they actually started their careers in another genre entirely. Bound, their 1996 queer crime thriller starring Gina Gershon and Jennifer Tilly, launched them onto the scene as audacious visual stylists and smart thrillmakers. If noir has basically died in our current film landscape, this film represents one of its great final moments.

Why Photographic Realism Makes Disney’s ‘The Jungle Book’ the VFX Oscar Favorite

Why Photographic Realism Makes Disney’s ‘The Jungle Book’ the VFX Oscar Favorite
Jon Favreau’s “The Jungle Book” achieved a new level of photographic-based realism in re-imagining the Disney animated classic, which is why it’s the VFX Oscar favorite. You believe that the real Mowgli (newcomer Neel Sethi) belonged in the virtual jungle with the CG Bagheera, Baloo, Shere Khan and King Louie. Favreau had two-time Oscar-winning VFX supervisor Rob Legato (“Hugo” and “Titanic”) to thank for engineering his tech success (watch the video below, “Rob Legato on Virtual Production and Technicolor”).

For Legato, The Jungle Book” represents the latest in a long line of photo-real advancements blending live-action and VFX with seamless precision, including “Apollo 13,” “Titanic,” The Aviator,” “Avatar” (facilitating the virtual production workflow for James Cameron) and “Hugo.”

Films people agreed to make to get their dream projects made

Simon Brew Oct 7, 2016

From Demolition Man and James Bond through to Speed 2 and Steven Seagal: the movies filmmakers took on to get other projects made.

One for the studio, one for yourself? That’s sometimes been the case when it comes to making movies, and we suspect – under the surface – it happens more than we’re ever told. However, every now and then, it becomes clear that someone has signed up for a movie, with getting the film they really, really want to make as the hidden reason. Such as in these cases…

Nigel Hawthorne: Demolition Man

The late, great Nigel Hawthorne wasn't much of a fan of the much-liked Sylvester Stallone-Wesley Snipes showdown, Demolition Man. In his autobiography Straight Face, Hawthorne called the experience of making the film "miserable", and wasn't impressed with the time lost on set waiting around for Stallone and Snipes.

What We Learned From ‘The Jungle Book’ Blu-ray About the VFX Oscar Frontrunner

What We Learned From ‘The Jungle Book’ Blu-ray About the VFX Oscar Frontrunner
The Jungle Book” is clearly the VFX Oscar frontrunner for its cutting edge integration of virtual environments and animated characters, with newcomer Neel Sethi as the only live-action component as Mowgli.

Mpc created the bulk of the virtual work (54 species and 224 unique animals along with plants, trees, vines, rocks, rushing rivers, mudslides and grasses blowing in the wind), while Weta Digital did the bravura King Louie sequence (keyframing Christopher Walken’s iconic ape along with his minions that he whips up into a frenzy).

The Jungle Book Reimagined, “the centerpiece of the Blu-ray bonus features, contains an informative roundtable recap between director Jon Favreau, producer Brigham Taylor and Oscar-winning production VFX supervisor Rob Legato (“Hugo” and “Titanic”).

‘Showgirls’ 4K Restoration Trailer: Paul Verhoeven’s Erotic Cult Classic Returns To French Theaters

‘Showgirls’ 4K Restoration Trailer: Paul Verhoeven’s Erotic Cult Classic Returns To French Theaters
Simply put, cult classics aren’t made, they’re born. They’re not designed with the intention of becoming hits on the home video or midnight movie markets, they just exist as sincere creative expressions that happen to catch on with audiences and critics after in its initial theatrical run. Case in point: In 1995, director Paul Verhoeven released his erotic drama “Showgirls,” starring Elizabeth Berkeley as a street-smart hitchhikers who heads to Las Vegas to climb the ropes from stripper to showgirl. While she’s there, she’s introduced to the seedy underbelly of the dancing world and comes face to face with marginalization, violence, and exploitation. The film also stars Kyle MacLachlan (“Twin Peaks”), Gina Gershon (“Bound”), Glenn Plummer (“Speed”), Robert Davi (“Die Hard”), and more.

How Wachowski Siblings Lilly & Lana Supported Each Other Through Their Transitions
The Wachowskis are siblings, partners in Hollywood, and, most important, each other's support system. Lilly Wachowski, 48, came out as transgender on Tuesday, saying that she feels lucky "having the support of my family." Lilly's sister Lana, directing partner for films like The Matrix trilogy and 2015's Jupiter Ascending, is also a transgender woman. While the pair's journey to and through Hollywood success has been an interesting one, they were always by each other's sides. As children, Lana and Lilly grew up with their two sisters in Chicago. Early on, the pair developed an affinity for film, and would spend hours
