Top 100 Greatest Gay Movies

11 September 2012 7:58 AM, PDT | The Backlot | See recent The Backlot news »

Brace yourselves. This list of the Top 100 Greatest Gay Movies is probably going to generate some howls of protest thanks to a rather major upset in the rankings. Frankly, one that surprised the hell out of us here at AfterElton.

But before we get to that, an introduction. A few weeks ago we asked AfterElton readers to submit up to ten of their favorite films by write-in vote. We conducted a similar poll several years ago, but a lot has happened culturally since then, and a number of worthy movies of gay interest have been released. We wanted to see how your list of favorites had changed.

We also wanted to expand our list to 100 from the top 50 we had done previously. We figured there were finally enough quality gay films to justify the expansion. And we wanted to break out gay documentaries onto their own list (You'll find the »

'Ishtar': Seven Myths Regarding The Legendary Flop

21 May 2012 10:49 AM, PDT | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

"If all of the people who hate 'Ishtar' had seen it, I would be a rich woman today." So said Elaine May in 2006, two decades after the Warren Beatty-Dustin Hoffman comedy she wrote and directed had become synonymous with "extravagant flop." (The film grossed $14.4 million on a $55 million budget.) Up until May 22, 1987 (the day it opened in theaters, 25 years ago), advance buzz on "Ishtar" was contentious; it was either a brilliant comic masterpiece or a textbook case of overreach on the part of two giant Hollywood egos to whom no one could say, "No." After the film's release... same thing. To this day, the movie is roundly mocked for its alleged awfulness (often by people who've never seen it), while a passionate cult of fans insists it's a lost work of misunderstood genius that never got its proper due from critics or moviegoers. The truth lies somewhere in the middle. »

Happy Feet Two Blu-Ray Review And Giveaway

14 March 2012 11:34 AM, PDT | AreYouScreening.com | See recent AreYouScreening news »

Happy Feet Two is a film that, despite the first film’s success and the big name cast, returns to the days of animated adventures gearing themselves exclusively towards the younger market.

Overflowing with a shmaltzy goofiness that the first film only hinted at, and with a wandering, plodding plotline, the movie’s positive notes come down largely to grand displays, hi-jinx, and bites of wackiness. Frankly, this is not the death knell it might seem, as the film puts together a lot of fun for younger audiences, even if the themes perhaps needn’t be delivered with quite such a big stick.

In this installment of penguin adventure, Mumble finds himself with new difficulties, only now they surround his son, Erik. We may have all thought that our days would be filled with raucous dance routines (and they are), but Erik just isn’t that interested in dancing. Worse, »
