Actress Pamela Adlon on New FX Series ‘Better Things,’ Sundance Movie ‘First Girl I Loved’

8 September 2016 9:45 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Pamela Adlon — who got her start on shows that included “The Facts of Life,” and went on to voice Bobby Hill in “King of the Hill” — is co-creator (with Louis C.K.) and star of the FX series “Better Things,” which debuts Sept. 8. She can also be seen — or heard — this year in seven animated series and a film that debuted at Sundance, “First Girl I Loved.”

What was your big break?

When I think about my “big break,” I don’t think about my first job, because I was a child actor. I feel like things started turning around for me when I did [the 1996 film] “Bed of Roses.” That was right after my dad had passed away suddenly, and things started shifting for me. That film was a big deal for my career.

Do you prefer live action or voiceover acting?

I love being in the recording studio, just because it’s easier. I love it »

'Better Things' star Pamela Adlon on child acting, androgyny, and Bobby Hill

8 September 2016 6:00 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

I really like Better Things, FX's new comedy starring and produced by Pamela Adlon, who was Louis C.K.'s frequent on- and off-screen collaborator on Louie. (Here's my review from yesterday.) The show is deeply autobiographical, with Adlon playing a thinly-disguised version of herself: a single mom to three daughters, and a former child actress still plugging away in show business (finding more success in voiceover work than on camera) decades later. At press tour, I sat down with Adlon to talk about how (when she was still going by Pamela Segall) she got started in the business, her early '80s androgynous period — highlighted by Willy/Milly, where she played an adolescent girl who wished to be a boy, and woke up the next morning with a penis — the transition into voice work on shows like King of the Hill, the ways that her new art imitates her old »
