Romano's new sitcom wins critics' praise

10 December 2009 1:25 AM, PST | digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news »

Ray Romano's new sitcom Men Of A Certain Age has been praised by Us critics and viewers. The comedy star, who finished filming Everybody Loves Raymond in 2005, has won over viewers in his new series about three best friends in their 40s who are struggling to accept that they are middle-aged. The New Yorker's critic Nancy Franklin wrote: "[It is] surprisingly good... especially if, like me, you were put off by the character that Romano played in his long-running (more) »

Review: Men of a Certain Age - Pilot (series premiere)

8 December 2009 12:10 AM, PST | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

(S01E01) I'm not even sure what I just watched. Here was a show about guys being guys, and yet there were no sexual exploits, and no drinking, watching sports or tinkering with cars. It's as if someone took all the stereotypes about men and threw them out the window. Instead what we got was a raw and honest look at manhood.

It was a revelation. More importantly, it was wonderful.

Ray Romano joined forced with one of his Everybody Loves Raymond cohorts, Mike Royce, to write and develop Men of a Certain Age. As if that wasn't a strong enough pedigree, he got the likes of Andre Braugher and Scott Bakula to join him as the three men at the centerpiece of this exploration of middle age.

TV Review: ‘Men of a Certain Age’ Promising But Off to Dull Start

7 December 2009 10:20 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – The mid-life crisis of the modern man is mostly about ego - as the body goes downhill and the role of the alpha male is supplanted by a new version of himself, men kind of fall apart as they realize that their peak has arguably passed. Why would such an individual experience make for intriguing drama? Using the mid-life crisis as a jumping off point for drama would require some seriously well-drawn characters, the kind of guys who you root to come to terms with passing over that hill. “Men of a Certain Age” does not yet have those characters.

Television Rating: 2.5/5.0

Stars Ray Romano, Andre Braugher, and Scott Bakula are undeniably talented actors who have all found massive success in television on shows like “Everybody Loves Raymond,” “Homicide: Life on the Street,” and “Quantum Leap,” respectively. Watching them play characters in decline, one can’t help but think »

Ray Romano: Grilled

6 December 2009 5:51 PM, PST | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

By Jordan Reife

Just a kid from Queens, Ray Romano became one of the most popular performers in television with “Everybody Loves Raymond," winning four Peoples Choice Awards for his work on the show. During its wildly successful run, "Raymond" garnered two Golden Globe nominations and three Emmy Awards among its many accolades. Years later, however, when the cheering has stopped, Romano has a second act in mind: “Men of a Certain Age," a primetime drama debuting Monday, December 7 on TNT. The new show takes a look at three guys, Romano, Andre Braug »

Men of a Certain Age: Will Everybody Still Love Ray Romano?

Viewers who tune into TNT's Men of a Certain Age (Monday, 10/9c) won't find the next decade's version of Everybody Loves Raymond, and they certainly won't laugh as much as they're used to.

Ray Romano, who used his unique perspective on life to tell jokes, first as a stand-up comedian and later as a sitcom star, uses that same perspective to examine weightier issues. And even though Raymond depicted Romano's semi-autobiographical experiences as a son, brother, husband and father, he says his new character, golfer-turned-party-store-owner Joe Tranelli, is much closer to home.

'Debbie Macomber's Mrs. Miracle': Maybe Christmas specials don't have to be good

6 December 2009 6:24 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Okay, I'll say it upfront, I'm not a big fan Christmas movies, so the thought of sitting through Debbie Macomber's Mrs. Miracle wasn't exactly my idea of a perfect night in. The Hallmark Channel film, which premiere Saturday night, starred James Van Der Beek as a widowed father of twins desperately seeking nanny, while Doris Roberts played the geriatric version of Mary Poppins. (She didn't crinkle her nose or snap her fingers to make magic happen, the sound mix took care of that.) You could predict the formulaic plot line of this special ten minutes in. Men Of A Certain Age (Episodes 1 - 3) Review - Starring Ray Romano, Scott Bakula and Andre Braugher

5 December 2009 8:26 AM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Prime time drama is something usually reserved for blow-em-up action, unrealistic life situations, or a very complicated love triangle (octagon, etc). All of these are extremely over the top, and, for the most part, are completely lost on male audiences. From Ray Romano comes Men of a Certain Age, a show that looks to change all that, a show that gives viewers the things most shows can’t: a believable drama that has the allure of intense story, while also being accessible by everyone who watches it, especially men.

Men of a Certain Age follows three lifelong friends in their daily lives. Joe (Ray Romano) is the owner of a party supplies store whose recently separated from his wife, Owen (Andre Braugher), a car salesman who is knee deep with family issues of his own, and Terry (Scott Bakula), a man who has spent his entire life living in the »

'Men of a Certain Age': Four things to watch for

4 December 2009 5:32 PM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

Ray Romano returns to TV Monday, four years after "Everybody Loves Raymond," with a new series that he co-created.

Naturally, the show from the veteran stand-up and comedy Emmy winner is a drama. "Men of a Certain Age," which Romano co-created with "Raymond" writer and executive producer Mike Royce, premieres at 10 p.m. Et Monday on TNT.

"Drama" maybe isn't the exact right word for the show. "Men of a Certain Age" is an easygoing dramedy about three guys (Romano, Andre Braugher and Scott Bakula) on the far side of 40 who are still trying to figure out the direction of their lives. It's not a show that will reach out and grab you, but it does grow on you with its honest and funny portrayal of long-standing male friendship. Here are five things to watch for in the series.

Men of a Certain Age -- An early look

4 December 2009 11:02 AM, PST | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

If you ever watched Everybody Loves Raymond -- or currently watch the reruns -- you might wonder what would Raymond become after a while. What would happen if he didn't have Deborah yelling at him and his family keeping him from being a self-indulgent slob who only thought of himself. Men of a Certain Age shows you the dark side of Raymond, only here Ray Romano is called Joe. Joe and his college buddies, Owen and Terry, are on the wrong side of 40 and they know it.

Missed My Name Is Earl? Time to atone

4 December 2009 6:44 AM, PST | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

The karma-fuelled comedy My Name Is Earl is getting daily repeats on E4 – and there are plenty of reasons to catch up

My Name Is Earl is back. No, they're not making any new episodes – although one never knows with Us TV – but Earl is getting repeated, daily on E4 from tonight, which is good news for the many fans of the show and even better news for those who somehow eluded its charms over its 96-episode run.

When Earl first hit in 2005, it hit big. Impressive ratings in the States earned it a decent, prominent slot in the schedules here – unlike, say, the massively underrated and still brilliant King Of The Hill. The story of a man with a huge list of misdeeds to atone for, Earl hit its stride almost immediately. The karma-fuelled plotlines twisted and turned while exploring the locale of Camden County and its colourful denizens. »

'Friends,' 'ER,' reality TV top list of 10 most-watched episodes of the decade

3 December 2009 9:05 AM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

The #1 most-watched single episode of the aughts? The "Friends" series finale. What other shows made the list?

Reuters has released a list of the most-watched TV episodes of the last decade. Some are hardly a surprise; some are very surprising (and slightly depressing). The list is as follows (it does not include duplicate titles, so a show can only have their highest-viewed episode on the list):

1. "Friends," "The Last One," May 6, 2004, 52.5 million viewers

2. "Survivor: Pulau," finale, Aug. 23, 2000, 51.7 million

3. "Joe Millionaire," finale, Feb. 17, 2003, 40 million

4. "ER," "All in the Family," Feb. 17, 2000, 39.4 million

5. "American Idol," season six premiere, Jan. 16, 2007, 38.1 million

6. "Grey's Anatomy," "It's the End of the World as We Know It," Feb 5, 2006, 38 million

7. "Who Wants to be a Millionaire," May 3, 2000, 36 million

8. "Frasier," "Something Borrowed, Something Blue," May 18, 2000, 33.7 million

9. "Everybody Loves Raymond," "The Finale," May 16, 2005, 32.9 million

10. "Spin City," "Goodbye," May 24, 2000, 32.8 million

Interestingly enough, only three of the Top 10 are from the latter »

What should ITV do with GMTV? | Stuart Heritage

1 December 2009 12:08 AM, PST | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

How can ITV improve matters in the lacklustre world of breakfast television now it has complete control of GMTV?

Morning! What would you like to wake you up on a dark and rainy winter's day? Probably something a little more appealing than the current choice of breakfast television. There's the increasingly drippy GMTV; the profoundly depressing Everybody Loves Raymond on Channel 4; BBC One's Breakfast and something called Pinky Dinky Doo on BBC Two. (Or there's Chris Moyles on the radio, but you're not an animal, are you?)

But change may be afoot. GMTV – which was last week fully acquired by ITV - is facing an editorial review. What changes could await? ITV could try to follow the BBC Breakfast route – currently probably the best option, but even then it's essentially the televisual equivalent of a loveless marriage: you're happy to go through the motions with it, but you wouldn't really »

Men Of A Certain Age Preview

27 November 2009 9:02 AM, PST | AreYouScreening.com | See recent AreYouScreening news »

TNT, who are doing pretty well in terms of original shows by my score, have a new show premiering December 7th at 10/9c, and it looks like another effort with serious potential. Men of a Certain Age stars Ray Romano, Scott Bakula, and Andre Braugher, and I like the general look of things. While I haven't had a chance to view a complete episode yet, I've seen a lot of clips and talked to several people, and I think the character interplay is going to make for a very solid show. Check out some clips and mark your calendar. Better yet, set your Tivo to record the show here. John Lennon once wrote, “Life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans.” For three men entering the second act of their lives, those words are starting to hit home in TNT’s newest original series, Men Of A Certain Age. »

'How I Met Your Mother' Officially Hires Amanda Peet

20 November 2009 8:49 PM, PST | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

Neil Patrick Harris' dream comes true quite fast as it is announced that Amanda Peet will indeed guest star on "How I Met Your Mother". There is no clue yet what kind of role Peet will play but TV Guide said her cameo will be in a January episode.

On Thursday, November 19, Harris who plays Barney in the sitcom said that he has Peet in mind for a guest star. "You know, she's never guest-starred on any shows before and plus, she's already worked with Jason Segel once on 'Gulliver's Travels'," he told E! Online. Segel is Marshall in "Himym".

Peet is not the only guest star coming to the show this season. This Monday, November 23, Chris Elliot from "Everybody Loves Raymond" is playing Lily's estranged father who comes for family Thanksgiving dinner. Then there will be Rachel Bilson, Tim Gunn and Stacy Keibler in the 100th »

Fred Willard checks in to Modern Family

18 November 2009 6:02 AM, PST | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

There's an old adage in show business that says something to the effect that casting is half the battle. If you cast a part well, you're sure to have a winning finished project. If that's true, then the casting of Fred Willard on Modern Family is sure to be a hit. I won't reveal what role Fred will be playing til after the jump, so if you don't want to know, don't read on. Suffice to say, the very funny Mr. Willard is being given a great opportunity to shine.

Willard, who was terrific on Everybody Loves Raymond, not to mention all the Christopher Guest films like Best In Show and A Mighty Wind, was on sitcom TV just last season on Fox's Back to You. In fact, it was on that show that Fred worked with Modern Family's Ty Burrell. Now they get to do it again.

Promo Photos & Synopsis – How I Met Your Mother 5.09 "Slapsgiving 2: Revenge of the Slap"

17 November 2009 12:31 PM, PST | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

Living up here in Canada (where we all live in igloos and must snowshoe through 4 feet of snow every day – even in the summer!), I am always confused by the strange American custom of having Thanksgiving in November, instead of October when we have it.  I'm guessing that the Canadian and American settlers couldn't keep their schedules coordinated properly or something on this whole "Thanksgiving thing".   Or it might have something to do with the fact that we each settled our countries in entirely different years.  I don't know.  I'm not a historical scholar, damnit!

Anyways, I mention this because the November 23rd new episode of How I Met Your Mother is a Thanksgiving episode, complete with slaps.  Because the slap is the one Thanksgiving tradition that brings everyone – Canadians and Americans alike – together.  Check out the promo photos and a short synopsis below and enjoy it while you can, »

Chris Elliott returns to TV

17 November 2009 8:06 AM, PST | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

Chris Elliott is quite possibly the most famous person few people have heard of. His early '90s sitcom Get A Life is a classic and he's had runs on TV shows like Late Night With David Letterman and Everybody Loves Raymond as well as some memorable movie cameos. And now he's in a new TV show.

It's called Eagleheart and it's about an over-the-hill action star who uses his television show of the same name "as a soapbox for his right-wing politics and conservative paranoia". He'll likely be more carictaure than character. Is the character based on Chuck Norris, I wonder?

It is produced by Conan O'Brien's production company. Conan actually co-created a pilot with similar themes (an over-the-hill star trying to remain relevant) in the early 90's called Lookwell starring Adam West.

It's got the right star and the concept certainly sounds amusing. But did it have to be Cartoon Network? »

Roberts Urges Girls To Cover Up

17 November 2009 1:56 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Veteran actress Doris Roberts is urging female stars to stop flashing the flesh - because dressing provocatively onscreen can have a negative effect on impressionable youngsters.

The Everybody Loves Raymond star, 79, insists young girls look up to their idols in the TV and film industry and she fears they may try to emulate the style of many leading ladies.

And Roberts is adamant females in Hollywood need to be careful about showing too much skin.

She tells Fox News, "I'm not a prude. I really am not. But if you're going to dress provocatively, you're going to get into trouble. Kids, right now, 12 year olds, 11 year olds, they're dressing and trying to emulate what they see on television or in movies. When you do that, you're judged, and even if you're not selling that, it appears like you are. That is not very good.

"I don't know if I would go as far to say that it's just Hollywood, it's advertising, it's everywhere, it's everything. It's sort of in the fabric, unfortunately, of our society." »
