Film Review: Brutal Coming-of-Rage Prison Drama ‘Starred Up’

5 September 2014 6:33 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Opening this weekend at Chicago’s Facets Cinematheque after a week on VOD is “Starred Up,” a bloody-knuckles British prison drama that was also a favorite at the most recent Chicago Critics Film Festival. This is an at-times beastly movie that follows in the line of previous character-driven jail films like “Chopper” (starring Eric Bana), or Tom Hardy’s raging breakout movie “Bronson”.

Rating: 3.5/5.0

While this movie may not have the narrative muscle of these references, this odyssey into a hidden world does feature two actors well on their way to becoming global obsessions, Jack O’Connell and Ben Mendelsohn.

O’Connell plays Eric Love, a raging teenager dumped into an adult prison to carry out a drug-related sentence. After asserting his power to his fellow inmates with an act of violence (and nearly killing someone albeit unintentionally), he makes a connection with his father Neville (Ben Mendelsohn) who »

Exclusive On Set Interview: Scott Derrickson - Deliver Us From Evil

3 July 2014 8:00 AM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Scott Derrickson, as evidenced by this interview, is one of the most thoughtful, sure-handed American directors the genre has working in the field today. If you’re not convinced of that after Sinister alone, then Deliver Us From Evil just might make you a believer.

Inspired by the true events of officer Ralph Sarchie and his dealings with the occult and assistance with actual exorcisms in some of the darkest corners of New York City, Derrickson and company will do their worst in trying to convince us that these occurrences are based in fact.

In doing so, Derrickson will also probably wind up scaring the crap out of you.

When we spoke to Derrickson on set in the South Bronx back in July of 2013, his usual soft, inviting demeanor was still on full display even though he was neck deep in the minute-to-minute stress of shooting a nuanced film that »

Exclusive: Scott Derrickson Talks Deliver Us From Evil, Sinister 2, and Doctor Strange

2 July 2014 5:50 PM, PDT | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

With Deliver Us From Evil now in theaters, I recently had the opportunity to interview director Scott Derrickson. We started by talking about him working on Deliver Us From Evil’s script back in 2004 and I learned about his reasons for casting Eric Bana, shooting in the Bronx, the real Ralph Sarchie, and his interest in a sequel. Derrickson also has a number of projects coming up, so I got a status update on Sinister 2 and asked him about taking on Doctor Strange:

Jerry Bruckheimer had the rights to Deliver Us From Evil for nearly ten years before the movie began filming. At what point did you come onto the project?

Scott Derrickson: The book is what started the whole process and Jerry Bruckheimer optioned the rights. He was looking for someone to adapt the book and I was hired back in 2004 to write the first draft of the script. »

Interview: Edgar Ramirez Talks Deliver Us from Evil

2 July 2014 10:25 AM, PDT | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

Today, Scott Derrickson’s gritty supernatural thriller Deliver Us from Evil arrives in theaters and, during a recent press day, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with co-star Edgar Ramirez about his role in the film as a struggling priest who must overcome great odds to battle evil.

Ramirez also chatted about how Derrickson’s storytelling approach complimented the material, what he did to prepare for his role in Deliver Us from Evil and his experiences collaborating with the film’s star, Eric Bana.

When you’re taking on a role like this one that is both emotionally and physically taxing, how do you walk away from this experience unscathed?

Edgar Ramirez: You don’t. You never do. That’s just part of this job and that’s really what you want as an actor- you need to be changed somehow. After a confrontation with any character that you portray, »

The Good, The Bad & The Badass: Eric Bana

29 June 2014 4:25 PM, PDT | JoBlo.com | See recent JoBlo news »

Last week, we took a look at the career of Christopher Walken, a legendary figure to be sure. This week's subject is probably a less obvious candidate for this column, but hopefully after reading this article you'll feel he's just as deserving of inclusion as anyone else... Eric Bana   Back in 2002, when Eric Bana was announced as the star of the much anticipated Marvel adaptation, The Hulk, most of us had the same reaction: Eric who? Unless you »

‘Doctor Strange’ director Scott Derrickson on the human horror of 'Deliver Us From Evil'

10 June 2014 4:45 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

(Cbr) As a writer and director, Scott Derrickson has distinguished himself with versatility and ambition, even when working in the same genre. From "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" to "Sinister" to now "Deliver Us From Evil," there’s a sophistication and a uniqueness to these projects; in fact, the only element they really share is that they’re genuinely scary. Perhaps it’s that quality that brought Derrickson to the attention of Marvel, which has tapped him to direct "Doctor Strange." With his latest project in particular, Derrickson finds himself in the catbird seat as he is poised to take advantage of the success of last year’s "The Conjuring" with a film that promises to chill audiences while managing to communicate a clear, proficient voice behind the camera. Based on a true story, "Deliver Us From Evil" stars Eric Bana as Ralph Sarchie, a Bronx cop who’s pulled »

Deliver Us from Evil Set Visit: Eric Bana Talks Demons, Exorcism, and the NYPD

3 June 2014 10:28 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Last July, Screen Gems invited us on the Bronx, New York set of their supernatural horror film Deliver Us from Evil. Originally titled "Beware the Night", the film is based on a book by former NYPD Detective Ralph Sarchie. Sarchie was a sixteen year veteran of the forty-sixth precinct in the South Bronx, one of the most virulently crime-ridden areas in the seventies and eighties. Sarchie was a chronicler of the occult, participating in numerous exorcisms and cases of demonic possessions. Deliver Us from Evil takes place in modern times with Eric Bana starring as Sarchie. The film is written and directed by Scott Derrickson, who has had tremendous success in the horror genre with his previous films, The Exorcism of Emily Rose and Sinister. Deliver Us from Evil costars &#201dgar Ram&#237rez as Mendoza - a Catholic priest, and Joel McHale as Butler, Sarchie's NYPD partner.

Scott Derrickson Talks Bringing the Devil to Life and More for Deliver Us from Evil

3 June 2014 7:00 AM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Director Scott Derrickson has been scaring the hell out of people for several years now, and he looks to continue the trend with his latest project, Deliver Us from Evil. Recently we sat down with him to talk about the film, and believe us when we tell you the devil is truly in the details.

Dread Central: We only got to see, well, basically, nothing more than the trailer. So, can you start by telling us a little about it?

Scott Derrickson: Yeah, the movie is about a guy, about Ralph Sarchie, who’s based on a real guy, a cop in New York City who Eric plays and the movie is about... his slow but steady confrontations with these supernatural occurrences that get him drawn into these cases, and that starts to affect his personal life and his family life and his belief system and all that.

Jerry Bruckheimer Dishes on Deliver Us From Evil, New Pirates Movie, CSI: Cyber and More!

2 June 2014 8:15 AM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

We're kicking off our extensive Deliver Us From Evil interview series today with a lengthy chat with one of the industry's great producers, Jerry Bruckheimer. Read on to find out if it was the devil who made him do it!

Dread Central: Why did you want to do a movie on exorcism?

Jerry Bruckheimer: We like to put a voice to things that are true and Ralph Sarchie’s story was very intriguing. It was something that I didn’t understand or believe but apparently these things actually happened.

DC: We heard that some weird things happened on the set. Were you privy to anything?

Jb: No, but I’m sure [director] Scott [Derrickson] could tell you some of the weird things that happened. One thing that happened, it was the rainiest June in the recorded history of New York. So when you see the movie, and you’ll see it rains, »

The New 'Deliver Us From Evil' Trailer Is Very 'Sinister' (Video)

14 May 2014 8:30 AM, PDT | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

The past few summers have been great times to get scared at the movies, what with offerings like "Sinister," "The Purge," and "The Conjuring" freaking people out in theater across the country. This trailer for "Deliver Us From Evil" looks like we won't be getting a respite from onscreen scares any time soon - and that's a good thing.

"Sinster" co-writer/director Scott Derrickson is at it again with this story about a cop and a priest and some good, old-fashioned exorcisms. New York City isn't an easy place to live in the best situation, but Officer Ralph Sarchie's beat is filling up with some seriously devilish activity. Played by former comedian Eric Bana, Sarchie is your average cop who puts his job ahead of everything else, and he's not one for any of this supernatural nonsense. That is, until he meets a priest named Mendoza who convinces him that »
