Film Review: ‘Tickling Giants’

24 March 2017 5:19 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

I would argue that the way we watch political documentaries has changed in the last two months. Before that, if I had seen a movie like “Tickling Giants,” an ebullient portrait of Bassem Youssef, the heart-surgeon-turned-comedian who became known as “the Jon Stewart of Egypt” (or, at least, he did until his show was squashed by the regime and he felt like he had to escape the country), I would have been drawn to Youssef’s barbed glee and charismatic cunning, and to his extraordinary fearlessness. But I also would have thought, as a documentary about a repressive government can lead one to think, “How lucky I am to live in America,” and also, “There’s no way that could ever happen here! We value our freedom way too much.”

I still believe those statements are true, yet after two months of President Trump — his menacing autocratic style, his overt hostility to an unrestricted press, »

‘The A.V. Club’ Wants to Be Your Smart TV: How The Pop-Culture Site Is Moving Into the Entertainment News Circuit

24 March 2017 2:39 PM, PDT | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

A modest studio nestled in a corridor of industrial Chicago is the latest front in the ongoing battle to marry news and pop culture. Here, writers for the Fusion network’s new weekly show, “The A.V. Club,” are discussing how to best taste-test a Nintendo Switch cartridge.

The gag will serve as the cold open for the second episode of the pop-culture website’s eponymous TV show, which premiered March 16 and will air a new episode every Thursday evening. Host John Teti and his writers, Yolanda Carney and Fran Hoepfner, recently learned that Nintendo has coated cartridges for its new gaming system in something deliberately foul-tasting, to prevent children from eating them. “So we’re feeding it to adults,” Hoepfner said.

Bassem Youssef Could Save Us All: Why the ‘Egyptian Jon Stewart’ Deserves an American Show

23 March 2017 1:08 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

A lot of American comedians have struggled to figure out the framework for satire in the age of an oppressive president. Bassem Youssef has been here before.

Around five years ago, Egyptian-born comedian was a cardiologist in Cairo who launched a YouTube show mocking his government that quickly amassed 30 million views. That led to a local station giving Youssef his own program, “The Show,” which launched in 2012 at the height of the Arab Spring. In short order, Youssef was dubbed “the Egyptian Jon Stewart,” and lobbing fireballs at the tarnished leadership with the same caustic fervor of his American counterpart.

Naturally, Egyptian authorities took notice. Youssef was jailed, his family faced threats, and “The Show” went off the air. At first, he fled to Dubai, then resettled with his family in Los Angeles, where he has lived for the past year. In the summer of 2016, Youssef hosted “Democracy Handbook,” a »

Number of Comedy Central Specials from Women Slowly-but-Surely Increasing

22 March 2017 1:02 PM, PDT | Women and Hollywood | See recent Women and Hollywood news »

Yamaneika Saunders: yamaneika.com/Oxygen

At the beginning of the decade it was pretty much bros making stuff for other bros — plus “The Daily Show” and “Colbert Report” — at Comedy Central. But since the advent of “Inside Amy Schumer” in 2013 the network has been a much more welcoming and nurturing place for women in comedy. In addition to supporting series like “Broad City,” “Another Period,” and “Idiotsitter,” the network’s number of half-hour comedy specials from women has been slowly-but-surely growing since 2012, according to Vulture.

The source reported on comedian Sara Schaefer’s findings from 2012 on:

of Comedy Central half hour specials going to women: 2012: 8% 2013: 11% 2014: 14% 2015: 21% 2016: 29% 2017: 35% Hell yeah!

 — @saraschaefer1

The amount of women-led half-hour specials increased by six percent over the last year and by a whopping 27 percent since 2012. Five of the 14 specials in 2017— or about 35 percent — will be from female comedians: Jo Firestone, Sam Jay, Lashonda Lester, Yamaneika Saunders, and Jenny Zigrino.

“The pool of stand-ups networks can draw from is largely based on already-established comics,” Vulture writes, “meaning previous bias factors in, and it can be difficult for up-and-coming talent — especially women — to get noticed in the first place.” More women with half-hour specials means more women with a consistent presence in the comedy world.

Vulture notes that, despite this good news, the gender disparity in comedy remains “staggering.” The source points to the fact that Netflix released 20 English-language specials in 2016, and only two were from female comedians. Fortunately, that number is also slowly increasing: four of the 15 specials released so far this year are from women.

The strides for women in comedy might be incremental, but it’s still heartening compared to many other Hollywood spaces. In an examination of the highest grossing 1,000 films from 2007 to 2016, Dr. Stacy L. Smith, Dr. Katherine Pieper, and Marc Choueiti of the Media, Diversity, & Social Change (Mdsc) Initiative found that the past 10 years have seen little to no change for women directors and directors of color.

So we recognize improvement when we see it, even if it’s slow. Fingers crossed we’ll see another six percent uptick in women’s comedy specials in 2018.

For now, enjoy this clip from Saunders’ act:

Late-Night Hosts Share Theories on Ivanka Trump Getting a West Wing Office

Ivanka Trump is getting an office in the White House and a security clearance — a move TV's late-night hosts collectively raised their eyebrows at Tuesday night.

"Even though she's not a federal employee, she'll follow the restrictions that would apply if she were," White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer explained after it was announced that the first daughter would occupy an office on the second floor of the West Wing on Tuesday. "She's taken these steps with the advice of counsel and in consultation of the Office of Government Ethics."

Trevor Noah Claims Omarosa Cancelled on ‘Daily Show’ Last-Minute (Video)

Senior Trump adviser Omarosa was supposed to be a guest on “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah” Monday night but, according to Noah, she canceled last minute. The reasoning? The administration didn’t want her interview to “eclipse the news of the day.” Noah said in the opening segment that Omarosa was going to be promoting her episode of “Say Yes to the Dress.” The audience laughed, but Noah claimed that was true. If you remember, the news of the day was twofold: that FBI Director James Comey publicly said there was no evidence to back up President Donald Trump’s claims that his. »

Dave Chappelle Is Back as Netflix Specials Are Ready to Take Off

Dave Chappelle is joining some other major comedians tonight by going back to his roots in stand up.  Comedians like Chris Rock, Jon Stewart, Donnell Rawlings and Jerry Seinfeld have returned to the pure comedy of performing stand-up and Chappelle is doing the same.  It’s what got him his amazing career in the first place and it’s what’s putting him back in the spotlight today.  Honestly I don’t think I’ve ever been as excited about a stand up show as I am for these two specials. In the history of comedy shows I was psyched to see I think Chris

Tomi Lahren’s Show Pulled From the Blaze for a Week After Pro-Choice Comments

Tomi Lahren’s nightly talk show on Glenn Beck’s the Blaze will not be on the air this week, the conservative digital media outlet’s managing editor Leon Wolf told CNN on Monday.

A Daily Caller report earlier on Monday alleged that Lahren was suspended from the Blaze after her Friday appearance on “The View,” where she revealed that she is pro-choice.

“I am a constitutional, y’know, someone that loves the Constitution. I’m someone that’s for limited government,” she said. “So I can’t sit here and be a hypocrite and say I’m for limited government but I think the government should decide what women do with their bodies. I can sit here and say that, as a Republican and I can say, you know what, I’m for limited government, so stay out of my guns, and you can stay out of my body as well.”

Rumor: David Goyer May Be The Man To Direct Green Lantern Corps

17 March 2017 12:18 PM, PDT | LRMonline.com | See recent LRM Online news »

When Warner Bros. initially announced planned release dates for their DC Extended Universe, one title was noticeably absent, a Green Lantern film. Aside from rumors, Green Lantern is absent from all Justice League materials thus far, seeming to indicate that WB is looking to put off Green Lantern as long as possible following the sub-par 2011 film. Yet, earlier this year WB announced Green Lantern Corps would be written by Davis Goyer (Batman Begins, Man of Steel, Batman V Superman) and newcomer Justin Rhodes , based on a story by Goyer and Geoff Johns. It would feature two Lanterns, Hal Jordan and Jon Stewart, in what was described as "Lethal Weapon in space."

Today, the rumor broke that Goyer may actually be directing Green Lantern Corps. Batman News first reported this story with information from an interview with reporter Jeff Sneider on the Meet The Movie Press podacst. Batman News acknowledges this »

Interview – Director Gavin Wiesen & Composer Alec Puro Discuss Their New Film All Nighter

15 March 2017 4:10 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

As filmmakers and moviegoers know by now, there are many elements that have to come together to make a movie truly spark and become a Titanic, Star Wars, or even as we have seen this year a La La Land. These components can include the cinematography, the writing, the actors’ performances and also very importantly the score. Can you imagine Jaws or Halloween without the ominous themes telling us when danger is near? Gavin Wiesen learned the importance of a film’s score and the emotion it can bring after working with composer Alec Puro on his directorial debut/Sundance hit The Art of Getting By. With Puro and Wiesen remaining good friends after The Art of Getting By was complete, it only made sense for them to work together again on Wiesen’s follow up feature All Nighter hitting theaters in La this Friday and expanding to VOD & Digital HD March 24th. »
