This was the first Takeshi Kaneshiro film I ever saw, and I'm thankful that I wasn't so turned off by the bad plot that I never wanted to see another film of his again.
I was flipping through the channels while I was in vacation in China on a rather boring day, and this caught my eye in a very shallow way. I had never heard of Jimmy Lin before either, but he was remarkably cute as the male lead, and had a certain charm in his mannerisms that made me want to watch. Then there was the bully, appealing in that sensitive, alienated, James Dean-ish way. And when Takeshi appeared on screen, that was it for me. I had to watch until the end because he's just that attractive, and I didn't regret my decision.
That doesn't mean this movie is good. School days is very predictable movie with very corny dialogue. A rich kid's son goes to a private high school and is immediately accosted by a small gang (three guys led by the aforementioned good-looking bully) who says he has to pay up "protection" money. Of course the rich kid has no money himself and so conflict...yada yada yada. He always manages to escape their grasps. Then enters a new student, "Eagle", played by Takeshi, who takes the kid under his wing. Eagle is tough and can defend himself, but he won't fight anyone because of his inner demons and troubled past, and I'm really making it sound much more interesting than it is because it's not at all. The plot is not why you'll want to see this movie. You'll want to see it because of the three very hot guys in it, and maybe because of a young Ruby Lin who plays the girl everybody wants for some reason.
To those people who admire Takeshi Kaneshiro's varied performances and charisma, you'll find it sorely lacking here. He's wooden as a stick. But he still looks good, and if you're shallow like me, I highly recommend seeing this. He looks so young and clean cut in his school uniform.
