Experts Golden Globes predictions shocker: Sandra Bullock over Cate Blanchett for Drama Actress

21 November 2013 1:44 PM, PST | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

While most of our Experts expect Cate Blanchett ("Blue Jasmine") to win the Best Actress Oscar, an overwhelming majority are backing Sandra Bullock ("Gravity") to take home the Golden Globe for Drama Actress. With seven Experts in Bullock's corner, she has leading odds of 17 to 10 while Blanchett, with the support of just two Experts, has odds of 13 to 5. See the Experts' latest rankings here. Bullock won this award with her only previous bid four years ago for "The Blind Side" and then repeated at the Oscars. Surprisingly, this queen of the rom/coms has lost all three of her Comedy/Musical Actress races: for "The Proposal," also in 2009, to Globes favorite Meryl Streep ("Julie and Julia"); for "Miss Congeniality" in 2001 to Renee Zellweger ("Nurse Jackie"); and for "While You Were Sleeping" in 1996 to Nicole Kidman ("To Die For"). Gravity helps Sandra Bullock achieve re-entry as an A-list Hollywood draw

3D space disaster movie relies on her personal qualities and acting chops that continue to produce hits from unlikely material

• Video: Gravity star Sandra Bullock: 'What we do, it's all sci-fi'

Peter Bradshaw's five-star review for Gravity

Sandra Bullock may not have been the obvious first choice to play a scientist stuck in high-earth orbit in a 3D space thriller – especially not for producing studio Warner Bros, who had originally intended Gravity to be a vehicle for Angelina Jolie.

But there's no question now that she made the role her own. After a string of perky, cornbread roles over the past two decades, Bullock can also claim to have substantially reinvented herself with this grim-faced, physically demanding performance. Gravity's success – it will almost certainly overtake The Blind Side as her highest-grossing film in the not too distant future – caps a spectacular second coming for the actor, whose »

Last Vegas Review

Certificate: 12A.

Synopsis: Three sixty-something friends take a break from their day-to-day lives to throw a bachelor party in Las Vegas for their last remaining single pal.

Out among the world of unexpected ensembles in film, you wouldn’t usually put these four movie stars together into what’s sold as The Hangover for the older generation. However, Last Vegas is directed by Jon Turteltaub, the man once behind Cool Runnings and While You Were Sleeping, and holds much more than the cheap laughs of that destructive franchise with a strong connection to long-term friendships and a focus on the sacrifices we all make for others.

We start fifty-eight years ago with a set-up quicker than old father time as we’re introduced to the ‘Flatbush Four’ who are Billy (Michael Douglas »

Michael Douglas & Jon Turteltaub Talk 'Last Vegas,' Fake Breasts, and Difficult Actors

30 October 2013 3:30 AM, PDT | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

In "Last Vegas," a group of best friends get together to celebrate the impending nuptials of one of the dudes. An age-old story, right, and one that we've seen a few times over the past few years, mostly in bawdy R-rated comedies like "The Hangover" trilogy. The twist with "Last Vegas," of course, is that all of these dudes are, well, much older.

Instead of nubile, CW-approved stars, the movie is stocked with five seasoned Oscar winners -- Michael Douglas, Morgan Freeman, Robert De Niro, Kevin Kline, and Mary Steenburgen. The actors are clearly having a ball, and the movie is just as fun to watch, full of nifty little gags and a kind of warm-hearted optimism. Unlike "The Hangover" movies, there isn't a nasty bone in this movie's body.

We were fortunate enough to get to talk to "Last Vegas" director Jon Turteltaub, who is coming off of three »

Film Review: ‘Last Vegas’

28 October 2013 12:01 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

As creaky as an arthritic hip, “Last Vegas” does for four leading stars of the ‘70s and ‘80s what movies like “Tough Guys” and “Grumpy Old Men” did for survivors of Hollywood’s storied Golden Age: It lets them show they can still throw a punch, bust a move, and get it up, and that they’re not quite ready for the Motion Picture Home just yet. Beyond that, this genteel “Hangover” for the Aarp crowd has little to recommend it, though a smattering of funny gags and the nostalgia value of the cast — none of whom, curiously, have ever shared the screen before — keeps the whole thing more watchable than it has any right to be. Smartly counterprogrammed against fanboy behemoths “Ender’s Game” and “Thor: The Dark World,” this Nov. 1 CBS Films release could score nicely with its target demo but seems unlikely to match the $175 million »

Box Office Notes: Pacific Rim & Sandra Bullock

14 July 2013 11:00 AM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

giant fucking robots, the multi-franchise franchiseThis week's box office results are an example of why we can't have nice things. The top two films are both sequels. Audiences didn't get super worked up about the "original" opener, Guillermo del Toro's monster movie Pacific Rim. Yet the people decrying the general moviegoing public for "rejecting originality" -- a claim I keep hearing on twitter and on blogs -- have failed to admit that Pacific Rim looks Just like Transformers Meets Godzilla in its advertisements. Which is not, you know a hallmark of the truly original, to look like a mashup of two excessively familiar things. Now, before I'm stomped by giant metallic or clawed kaiju feet, please note that though I haven't seen it I'm sure that Pacific Rim doesn't play like a Transformers sequel since one can't really mistake the filmmaking style of del Toro for Michael Bayisms. But »

12 Movie Posters Recreated With Their Original Titles

8 July 2013 11:00 AM, PDT | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

Remember back when everyone's favorite rom-com was "$3000" starring Richard Gere and hot new star Julia Roberts?

Not every movie starts out being called the movie we've come to know and love. In fact, it's rather common for movies to have "working titles," or titles that just ended up getting changed somewhere between conception and distribution. Steven Spielberg's classic tale of a young lad and his alien pal once had the rather whimsical if vague title of "A Boy's Life" and the Will Smith superhero yarn "Hancock" was almost known as the rather awful "Tonight, He Comes." (Huh?)

Usually whatever title is actually released is ultimately for the best. Here are what a few of the most recognizable movie posters might've looked like if the films they advertise hadn't gone through a name change.

'E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial' (1982)

'Pretty Woman' (1990)

'Hancock' (2008)

'Unforgiven' (1992)

'Big' (1988)

Sandra Bullock The Heat: Bullock’s biggest opening weekend at domestic box office? (Photo: Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock in The Heat) Starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy, Paul Feig’s buddy comedy The Heat opened with a remarkable — and better than initially expected — $39.11 million at 3,181 Us/Canada locations according to the June 28-30, 2013, weekend box-office figures found at Box Office Mojo. This weekend in North America, The Heat trailed only last weekend’s holdover, Disney / Pixar’s Monsters University, which collected $45.6 million. (See also how White House Down does Channing Tatum no favors.”) A 20th Century Fox release reportedly budgeted at $41 million (not including marketing and distribution expenses, or contractual box-office-gross-sharing obligations), The Heat went above the $35 million I’d predicted on Saturday because that day’s estimates found at Deadline.com were lower than in reality. The Heat was up 5% on Saturday, even though Friday’s box-office take included late Thursday shows. »

Sandra Bullock is one of America’s most loved actresses. Heck, even Anna Wintour the fearsome editrix of Vogue Us seems to have a soft spot for Sandy. There’s no better stamp of style approval that being granted one of the mag’s coveted covers, and Bullock’s appeared numerous times. After all, what’s not to like about a woman who knows how to appear confident but not outlandish, modern yet classic, and incredibly feminine without being frou-frou? Nothing, that’s what, see for yourself!
