Nicole Kidman not only gave a to-die-for performance for helmer Gus Van Sant, but also almost seemed to co-direct the feature herself.
Van Sant recalled to the New York Times just how committed Kidman was to the 1995 dark comedy “To Die For,” even going so far as to say she was “destined to play the part” and serving as a “second director” on set.
“Nicole called and said she was destined to play the part, so I believed her,” Van Sant said of casting the future Oscar winner early in her career. “I thought she was incredibly dedicated to making a fantastic performance through study of the script and the part, in a way I had never seen before.”
Van Sant continued, “There were notebooks, and scene exercises, and voice exercises — it was very thorough. Nicole was so versed in the scenes that she was like having a second director there,...

In Luca Guadagnino’s latest cinematic endeavor, “Challengers,” Zendaya, Josh O’Connor, and Mike Faist form a dynamic, throuple-esque trio, each delivering performances that scream Oscar-worthy. The real question is, will Academy voters look beyond the palpable sexual chemistry to acknowledge the film’s artistic merit? That’s a challenge for the marketing maestros.
Penned by newcomer Justin Kuritzkes, the spouse of “Past Lives” writer-director Celine Song, “Challengers” weaves through a 13-year narrative, chronicling the life of Tashi Duncan (Zendaya), a tennis wunderkind-turned-coach, who hatches a plan for her husband Art’s (Faist) comeback. The plan pits him against his ex-buddy and Tashi’s former flame, Patrick (O’Connor), setting the stage for a dramatic unraveling.

Gus Van Sant’s 1995 satirical black comedy To Die For begins in the midst of a news frenzy: Larry Maretto (Matt Dillon), a well-liked man who helped his family run their small-town Italian restaurant, has been murdered and his wife, Suzanne (Nicole Kidman), has been arrested as a suspect. The rest of the film, which blends mockumentary talking heads and flashbacks of the characters’ lives, sends up the contemporaneous sensationalism of high-profile criminal trials like those of O.J. Simpson and the Menendez brothers. By showing the murder upfront, the film, written by the late Buck Henry, proceeds as a rebuke to the public’s fascination with whodunit by psychoanalyzing an already apprehended party.
Yet from the moment we first see Suzanne speaking directly into the camera in an interview, we need not spend too much time unpacking her psychological state. Perfectly coiffed and dressed in tones not quite bright enough to outshine her wide,...

New Zealand’s funniest export Jackie Van Beek returns to SXSW atop the cast of “Audrey,” an Australian dark comedy that is headed to SXSW.
Van Beek, whose 2018 “The Breaker Upperers,” was a previous SXSW hit, portrays a forgotten former soap star whose career and life have been derailed by motherhood and suburban boredom. But when an accident puts her 18-year-old child in a coma, the woman takes on her daughter’s identity and gets a second chance at the life she actually wanted.
Other cast also include: Jeremy Lindsay Taylor (“Puberty Blues,” “The Diplomat”), Josephine Blazier (“True History of the Kelly Gang”) and disability advocate and actress Hannah Diviney (“Latecomers”).
“What begins as a light, sex-fuelled comedy about family soon takes a twisted journey into horror as, like a classic Greek tragedy, our protagonists decide that the only way to find happiness is to destroy their firstborn,” says director Natalie Bailey.

The official title of the opera making its U.S. premiere next week is Last Days. But Matt Copson, who co-directed it and also wrote its libretto, knows everyone will call it something else: the Kurt Cobain opera.
“That’s fine,” Copson says. “I’m up for that. It’s not about that, of course. But that’s an interesting entryway into the whole thing.”

Gus Van Sant has taken on a few superlatives over the course of his 40-year career: indie provocateur, Palme d’Or-winning filmmaker and, per the late Robin Williams, “mellowest man in Hollywood.”
A label that long eluded the 71-year-old director, despite his line of work, was Angeleno. Van Sant built one of the more eclectic résumés in modern cinema while living in Oregon, his chosen home until just a few years ago. “There were a lot of water issues near the end — tsunami years at the beach house, flooding on the river in Portland,” he says, now safely 700-plus feet above sea level in the unassuming Hollywood Hills mid-century home that he now calls his primary residence. “Finally, I just sold it all and kind of never went back.”

After her debut track, Obsessed, was released in 2021 and received several unfavorable reviews, Addison Rae admitted she thought about giving up on her music career.
According to her recent admissions regarding her music career, the initial response to “Obsessed” almost caused Addison Rae to give up singing. It is the year 2021.
Addison Rae switched to music after being one of the most popular users on TikTok. She publishes “Obsessed,” her first song, and performs it on Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show.
Despite being a bouncy bop, the song receives negative reviews from critics, and Addison’s attempts to become a pop sensation on social media are cruelly mocked.
Her lofty expectations for herself, which she claimed frequently became her demise, fed her skepticism about the future. As a result, Addison’s self-esteem suffered after she received backlash for her debut song, which made her ponder giving up on her goals.

Two years ago, Addison Rae toyed around with the idea of pop stardom. Her debut single, the glossy “Obsessed,” offered a small taste of where the influencer could take a full-fledged music career, but it was the only record she released in an official capacity. There were rumors of a potential full-length album, and plenty of leaked songs from it. Rae has referred to the project in the past as “the lost album,” and now she’s found it — or at least some of it.

Gus Van Sant is a fiercely individual voice with one foot in the independent world and another in the studio system, Van Sant’s filmography varies wildly from mainstream entertainments to peculiar experiments, from sublime highs to extreme lows. Let’s take a look at all 17 of his films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1952 in Louisville, Kentucky, Van Sant kicked off his filmmaking career with the micro-budget, black-and-white “Mala Noche” (1985), a major preamble to the New Queer Cinema. His next feature, “Drugstore Cowboy” (1989), firmly established him as an indie maverick, a reputation he would fulfill with his followup, the River Phoenix/Keanu Reeves road movie “My Own Private Idaho” (1991). He dipped his toes into studio filmmaking with the gleefully dark satire “To Die For” (1995), which won Nicole Kidman a Golden Globe as Best Comedy/Musical Actress.

Few actresses of her era take as many chances as Nicole Kidman. The Oscar- and Emmy Award-winning actress has been one of the industry’s most sought-after performers since the early 1990s, and appeared in everything from splashy musicals like “Moulin Rouge!” (which netted Kidman her first of five Academy Award nominations) to historical fiction like “The Hours” (which won Kidman the Best Actress Oscar for playing Virginia Woolfe) to psychological thrillers like “Eyes Wide Shut” (where she starred opposite her now-ex-husband Tom Cruise) to blockbuster superhero movies like “Aquaman” (Kidman will also return for the sequel in 2022).
And that’s just on the big screen. In recent years, Kidman has acquitted herself exceedingly well in a spate of prestige television series, winning an Emmy for her nuanced work in “Big Little Lies” and scoring a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for “The Undoing.”

Nicole Kidman and her ex-husband Tom Cruise have done a couple of projects together. But there was one Cruise movie she felt she was better off avoiding.

Kidman and Cruise were used to collaborating on film projects. The two first met in the feature Days of Thunder, where Kidman played a doctor who falls for a race car driver. It was a part that Kidman wasn’t particularly too fond of.
“I wish I had a better role,” she once said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “It was kind of one-dimensional.”
But if there was any good that came out of the film for Kidman, it was bringing together her and Cruise. For Cruise, meeting Kidman might be what the superstar remembered most about the movie.

After visiting the Y2K pop sound with her Krazy Frog-sampling “2 Die 4” on Dirt Femme last year, Tove Lo returns to the era with her earworm single, “‘I like u.”
“I wanted to make another dance song that sonically felt like a nod to 90’s and Y2K dance music,” she said in a press release. “It’s not the usual pop structure but it’s perfect for this song, I think.”

Dark Nature begins with a much different, and more realistic horror than what follows. Joy is busy in the kitchen making dinner when Derek gets home. It’s obvious he’s not happy and from the way both Joy and the dog react we know that is a very bad thing. She barely escapes, the dog isn’t so lucky.
Six months later Joy is still trying to get past this trauma and her friend Carmen thinks she has the solution. She convinces her to join her, Tara (Helen Belay; Abracadavers), Shaina and some others on a camping trip/therapy session with the somewhat controversial Dr. Dunnely, “You guys talk about her like you’re in a cult”.

Just in time for Succession‘s end, let’s look at method acting. The Criterion Channel are highlighting the controversial practice in a 27-film series centered on Brando, Newman, Nicholson, and many other’s embodiment of “an intensely personal, internalized, and naturalistic approach to performance.” That series makes mention of Marilyn Monroe, who gets her own, 11-title highlight––the iconic commingling with deeper cuts.
Pride Month offers “Masc,” a consideration of “trans men, butch lesbians, and gender-nonconforming heroes” onscreen; the Michael Koresky-curated Queersighted returning with a study of the gay best friend; and the 20-film “LGBTQ+ Favorites.” Louis Garrel’s delightful The Innocent (about which I talked to him here), the director’s cut of Gregg Araki’s The Doom Generation, and Stanley Kwan’s hugely underseen Lan Yu make streaming premieres, while Araki’s Totally F***ed Up and Mysterious Skin also get a run. The American Film Institute is indefinitely postponing the AFI Life Achievement Award ceremony, dedicated to Nicole Kidman.
In a prepared statement the organization said Monday: “For nearly half a century, the AFI Life Achievement Award has convened artists and audiences in celebration of excellence in the art form. Joaquin Phoenix is receiving strong reviews for his performance in Ari Aster’s “Beau is Afraid,” about a mild-mannered, paranoid man who confronts his darkest fears as he embarks on an epic quest. Tomris Laffly (The Wrap) writes, “Joaquin Phoenix delivers one of his best performances.” With Phoenix likely to be a contender in the Best Actor category next year, either for “Beau is Afraid” or Ridley Scott’s upcoming “Napoleon,” let’s look back at Phoenix’s four previous Oscar races.
His first and to date only Oscar win came in early 2020 when he took home the gold trophy for Best Actor for his portrayal in “Joker,” directed by Todd Phillips. Phoenix’ victory was a sure thing going into Oscar night after sweeping the Golden Globes, Critics Choice, BAFTA and SAG Awards. The episode of Best Horror Movie You Never Saw covering The Fear was Written by Andrew Hatfield, Narrated by Jason Hewlett, Edited by Paul Bookstaber, Produced by John Fallon and Tyler Nichols, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Not every horror movie needs a recognizable slasher villain like Jason or Freddy to be an enjoyable watch. Sometimes, you just need the right type of oddball ingredients to catch lightning in a bottle and even then, there is no guarantee that your movie ends up in that upper echelon of hidden gem horror. Today’s movie, The Fear from 1995, had such a limited release and was overlooked by so many at the time that there is a good chance it’s the best horror movie you’ve never even heard of! Alicia Allain, a producer and actress who started in the business as a hair stylist, has died according to a social media post by her husband, John Schneider. She was 53.
“This is a time of unimaginable sorrow for me,” former Dukes of Hazzard star Schneider wrote after his wife’s passing. “Grief is much too small a word. I’ve heard it said that ‘with great love comes great sorrow.’ I had no idea what that meant until now. Alicia was the fuel that ran my biggest dreams. The inspiration behind every creative thought. The very fabric of my soul. The glue that held me together. I miss her more than any words could possibly describe.”
