Revealing mistakes: In the beginning of the movie, Sean McClennon (James Caan's character) states that "non-citizens" have no right to claims. Alaska was not even a US territory at the time, so in fact, Sean McClennon had no right to any claims as well.See more »

Thumbs Up! An Exciting And Thrilling Movie!, 7 August 2012
Author: Humphrey Fish from United States

In his efforts to gain control of a small mining town, Sean McLennon is buying up every mining claim that becomes available, usually after the deaths of the previous owners at the hands of McLennon's 'assistants.' I watched this movie on the Encore channel, and I heavily enjoyed it. But when I came onto this site, I saw that it had a rating of only 4.7. I don't know why, because this movie is a very, very, good movie! Maybe that's because this movie is obscure, I bet that if more people knew about it, then maybe the rating would be higher. But anyway, I give this movie a rating of thumbs up, it's exciting, thrilling, and in a few scenes, even suspenseful. Although I can't really say that this movie is one of the greatest movies that I've ever seen (as it isn't), I can say that it's a movie that definitely deserves more credit than it is getting. The scenery is very beautiful (this was filmed on location in Norway), it makes the movie look very realistic and it gives the viewers an idea of how the weather back in those days was, and in some places, it is still like that today.

James Caan (Sonny Corleone from The Godfather and The Godfather Part II)plays Sean McLennon, a power-hungry man who's trying to take control of all claims in Alaska by having many people who own them bumped off. James Caan did an excellent job at playing the villain, and it suits him just fine, as he usually is known for playing the villain more than the hero, and here, he's a great villain. Christopher Lambert gives a good supporting performance as Hudson Saanteek, a half-Indian man who refuses to stay dead no matter how many times he is injured. Caan and Lambert give the two best performances in the movie, they portray their characters in a way that you will be rooting for one of them, and intensely disliking the other one. In short, the acting helps make this movie as good as it is. But while Lambert's performance was good, it was kind of forced in a few spots, and also, James Caan's performance was better, he gave the best in the movie, he was brilliant, superb, and great.

In short, The North Star is a movie that is very underrated and definitely deserves more than what it is getting. This movie would probably have a rating higher than a 4.7 if more people knew about it, because with so few votes, it appears that very few people have seen this movie, and that's a shame, because it is a very, very, good movie! James Caan has given some good performances in the past, such as his performance in The Godfather, but this movie is probably one of the best movies that he has made since the beginning of the 1990's. Do I recommend that you see this movie. You probably should watch it, because it's worth it, definitely worth it. If you are looking for a good, exciting, thrilling, and suspenseful movie to spend 90 minutes watching, then watch The North Star, it will certainly satisfy you. Don't believe the negativity, the movie is actually a very good movie, it's a movie that's hugely enjoyable from start to finish.
