Bluray Review: Tales From The Crypt Presents: Demon Knight/Bordello Of Blood

21 October 2015 6:25 PM, PDT | iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news »

Horror fans have been dying for a good HD release of Tales From The Crypt Presents: Demon Knight for quite some time, and thanks to gang at Scream Factory, we not only have just that, but a special edition Bluray of release of Bordello Of Blood as well. Both releases feature brand new commentaries, as well as in depth docs detailing the making of and in the case of the latter Tales film, the troubles of everything from casting to diva attitudes. We had the chance to check out both releases, so sit back and read on!

The Film:

There are very few horror/comedies as entertaining as 1995’s Demon Knight. The first of three Tales From the Crypt films (2002’s Ritual was so bad that very few fans even acknowledge it), the Ernest Dickerson-helmed film was an instant hit with horror fans, and rightfully so, it’s kind of perfect. »

October 20th Blu-ray & DVD Releases Include Demon Knight, Bordello Of Blood, The Oblong Box

19 October 2015 9:50 PM, PDT | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

October 20th is yet another stellar week of horror and sci-fi home entertainment releases, all leading up to our favorite holiday: Halloween. One of my favorite films of all time, Ernest Dickerson’s Tales from the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight, is finally making its way to HD via a Collector’s Edition Blu-ray from Scream Factory. And as if that’s not enough, Scream is also busy with two more great releases this Tuesday as well—Bordello of Blood and The Larry Fessenden Collection.

Kino Lorber is reviving another cult classic on Tuesday too—The Oblong Box—which is based on the Edgar Allan Poe tale and co-stars two cinematic legends, Vincent Price and Christopher Lee. For those of you Back to the Future fans out there (and really, who isn’t?), Universal is giving the series a few special releases in time for the film’s 30th anniversary and, »

Satanic Sunday: Women Vs. the Devil

11 October 2015 9:01 AM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Most female characters in film succumb to the Devil. They are used as vessels or conduits for the Anti-Christ, lesser demons or the grandiose ideas of an occult. More often than not- they are chased, seduced or beaten into submission by satanic happenings. But some of these women do display degrees of ingenuity, agency, and physical prowess in their battle against coercion and the corruption of souls. Ranked from weakest characterization to strongest, the following list discusses the faculties that these women retain in the face of evil. (Minor spoilers ahead).

Lisa Reiner in Lisa and the Devil (1973)

Lisa (Elke Sommer) is overtaken by the spirit of a long deceased woman named Elena and the Devil all at once. Trapped deep in her mind, we hardly know Lisa outside of her light, carefree existence as an American tourist right before her possession. Purely a vessel for the malevolent temptation of »

Retrospective: Celebrating the 20th Anniversary of Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight (Part Two)

13 January 2015 3:22 PM, PST | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

Writer’s Note: This is the second part of my celebration of Ernest Dickerson’s Demon Knight, which turns 20 today. Truly one of my favorite horror movies to come out of the 1990’s (or really, any decade), Demon Knight was a landmark endeavor for many reasons. You can catch up with Part One of my retrospective here.

-----

In Demon Knight, Brayker (William Sadler) and The Collector (Billy Zane) are vying for control over an ancient relic that controls the very fate of humanity. The duo eventually face-off at a remote long-term hotel in New Mexico called The Mission where several residents end up getting caught in the middle of their epic showdown. The hotel is run by the wise-cracking, no-nonsense Irene (Cch Pounder) who makes it her job to keep her renters in line, including former convict Jeryline (Jade Pinkett), a well-meaning prostitute named Cordelia (Brenda Bakke) and her client, »

Retrospective: Celebrating the 20th Anniversary of Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight (Part One)

12 January 2015 3:25 PM, PST | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

After several successful seasons on HBO under its belt, Tales from the Crypt and its iconic host, The Cryptkeeper (voiced by John Kassir), made the leap to the big screen in January 1995 with the feature film Demon Knight. Directed by Ernest Dickerson and starring William Sadler, Billy Zane, Jada Pinkett, Dick Miller, Brenda Bakke, Thomas Hayden Church, Cch Pounder and Charles Fleischer, Demon Knight debuted at #3 its opening weekend and took in over $21 million during its theatrical run, making the first of the Tales from the Crypt a bona fide success (even if the critics didn’t seem to think so).

A movie best remembered by fans for its masterful blending of horror and comedy, an incredibly diverse and talented cast  of players as well as an iconic soundtrack and jaw-dropping special effects to boot, it was love at first sight after I first experienced Demon Knight all those years »
