The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Review

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - more than one way to skin a cat...

I was concerned by the news last year that an English language version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo was in the pipeline so drastically soon after the original, Swedish version’s release. However, one portion of the news gave me reason to believe it may be worthwhile, this being the name attached to the project – David Fincher.

Though Lisbeth is the central focus, the story begins with Mikael Blomkvist, a liberal journalist who uses the Millennium magazine to take on corruption wherever it may rear its ugly head. He is hired by an elderly patriarch of an industrial company to investigate a murder that took place forty years prior. Meanwhile, Lisbeth is lying to her new legal guardian about what it is she actually does at the security firm where she holds the »

Before The Dragon Tattoo: The Best Of David Fincher

26 December 2011 3:24 AM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

There is, as I’m sure you’re aware, a holy trinity of Davids working within American mainstream cinema at the present time. Fincher, Lynch and Cronenberg. For me the one that has had the greatest cultural impact in the last 20 years has to be the former. He is that very rare director blessed with both box-office success and a cult classic following.

Born 1962 in Denver, Colorado, it was Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid that gave him the film-making bug and he started shooting 8mm shorts at the ripe old age of eight. After getting a job at Industrial Light and Magic where he worked on Return Of The Jedi, he went on to direct high grade music videos, for the likes of Madonna and Micheal Jackson and commercials, one of which, for the American Cancer Society in 1984, featured a foetus smoking a cigarette. A young Marla Singer, perhaps? »

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo Review

26 December 2011 3:22 AM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Director: David Fincher

Starring: Daniel Craig, Rooney Mara, Christopher Plummer, Stellan Skarsgård, Steven Berkoff, Robin Wright, Yorick van Wageningen, Joely Richardson

Certificate: 18

Synopsis: The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is the first film in Columbia Pictures’ three-picture adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s literary blockbuster ‘The Millennium Trilogy.’ Journalist Mikael Blomkvist is aided in his search for a woman who has been missing for forty years by Lisbeth Salander, a young computer hacker.

Billed as the ‘feel bad movie of the holiday season,’ or something along those lines in a trailer that debuted many months ago, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is based on the first part of the 65 million copy-selling Millennium trilogy of books by the late Scandinavian author Stieg Larsson. This is in fact the second time that The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo has indeed found its way to the big screen following the 2008 Swedish-language version, a »

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo Review

25 December 2011 5:00 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

So striking and unique was Swedish actress Noomi Rapace’s portrayal of 21st century anti-heroine Lisbeth Salander in the original 2009 film that director David Fincher and screenwriter Steven Zaillian already had their work cut out adapting author Stieg Larsson’s complex first book of his Millennium trilogy as an English-language film. The plot is so complex with its plethora of characters and emotions and deals with so many issues, including Nazism, serial murder, rape, torture and twisted family liaisons that it acts as both a cinematic dream and a hindrance if done incorrectly. Therefore, it’s a relief that Fincher and Zaillian not only appreciated that the central theme to refer everything to is the Salander journey and the breaking down of her defiant resolve, but also that the film could not be set anywhere else but in Sweden again, purely for the inherent cultural quality and mystique that the story desperately requires. »

Film Review: The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (2011)

The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo (2011) Film Review, a movie directed by David Fincher and starring Rooney Mara, Daniel Craig, Robin Wright, Stellan SkarsgardChristopher Plummer, Max von Sydow, Joely Richardson, David Dencik, Joel Kinnaman, Embeth Davidtz, Goran Visnjic, Julian Sands, Steven Berkoff, Geraldine James, Yorick van Wageningen, and Sahlima.

David Fincher’s The Girl with the Tattoo Dragon is Matt ReevesLet Me In to Tomas Alfredson’s Let the Right One In. It is that scenario, this time between Niels Arden Oplev and David Fincher, all over again: there is a book, its first adapted into a Swedish film (directed by Niels Arden Oplev) then its adapted into a Us film (David Fincher). And like the Let the Right One In / Let Me In scenario, the first film adaptation is far superior to the second film adaptation. In the current scenario, its even worse for the second director, »

Movie Review: The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

24 December 2011 1:12 PM, PST | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

Like I expected, David Fincher's adaptation of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo did not disappoint. As a fan of the book series that this film is based off of, and of Fincher, I had very high expectations for this film. I absolutely loved how this movie turned out, and any fan of the book should be extremely pleased with it. As much as I enjoyed the original Swedish version of the film, I thought this adaptation was much better.

The movie starts off with a beautifully disturbing opening title sequence that immediately engulfs you, leaving a little dazed. It's a great lead in to a patiently told disturbing tale of murder, scandal and abuse.

Fincher did an amazing job bringing this story to life. He was meant to adapt these books into movies, and I really hope that he gets to make the next two. For those of »

Pestilence, War, Famine and Death unleashed in 2012 in new comic series

24 December 2011 8:43 AM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

With some New Age and pseudoscientific beliefs claiming that 2012 is the date the world ends, it seems rather fitting that the first part of new miniseries The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse is due out out in the new year.

The graphic novel, titled Helldiver, will be available in January, with second book The Chosen and third volume End of Days following later in the year.

The project is a collaboration between Kevin Eastman, owner and publisher of Heavy Metal Magazine, video game creator/producer Michael Mondheim and fantasy/comic book artist Simon Bisley.

The series is described as "a dark, gritty, action-horror story inspired by the biblical tale of Armageddon."

Artwork and story descriptions - including a slideshow version - have been sent over to us and are included here.

Additional art is provided by the late Stan Winston, Tim Bradstreet, Chad Fidler and Dave DeVries, and the script »

Hollywood treats cinemagoers to a feast of Christmas film | Eric Hynes

23 December 2011 9:25 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Christmas is usually when Hollywood puts out its prestige films and Oscar-bait, but this year it's all about blockbusting action

Christmas weekend is upon us, but at the American multiplex it seems more like the 4th of July. In a season usually – or at least largely – dedicated to tony prestige pictures – the annual casting of Oscar bait – there are no less than three mass-market Hollywood franchises hogging all the attention and, inevitably, ticket sales: Steven Spielberg's The Adventures of Tintin, David Fincher's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and Brad Bird's Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.

Though major investments are on the line and the box office won't share the wealth evenly, these aren't exactly risky bets. The first two are lavishly mounted adaptations of beloved best-selling books, directed by auteurs as bankable as they are revered; and the last film is the fourth instalment in a longstanding series, »

Trent Reznor: 'I'm not at war with myself as I once was'

23 December 2011 4:24 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Trent Reznor's score for The Social Network won an Oscar. Will The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo bag him another? Dorian Lynskey meets him at his Beverly Hills home

Some time in the late 1990s, the music video director Mark Romanek approached his friend Trent Reznor to compose the score for his feature debut One Hour Photo, a thriller in which lab technician Robin Williams becomes obsessed with a suburban family. It was not the happiest time for Reznor, who was straining to complete the third Nine Inch Nails album and, he says, was about to "slip off a cliff of addiction". While things were still at the demo stage, he received an apologetic call from Romanek saying the studio was pressuring him to use a "real composer".

The physical evidence of how much has changed since those days is 34cm tall, gold-plated and stands on the mantelpiece of Reznor's house in Beverly Hills. »

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, David Fincher, 156 mins (18) **[p]Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, 133 mins, Brad Bird (12A) ***

Hiring David Fincher to direct the American remake of The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo, the first part of Stieg Larsson's Millennium trilogy, must have seemed a smart move by the producers. The gothic matter of family secrets, ritual murders, dogged sleuthing and state corruption looks an ideal fit for a film-maker who's delved deep into the psycho-horrors of Se7en and Zodiac. Yet while you can depend on Fincher's immaculate visual style as much as on his nose for moral putrefaction, it's hard to see how he has enhanced the Swedish original, or even much changed it – aside from getting rid of the subtitles that Us audiences find so tricky. »
