An angel named Simon visits a wake for a deceased colonel named Hawthorne. He removes Hawthorne's soul from his corpse (see the movie to see how) and carries it within his own body. Other angels apparently want Hawthorne's soul, because another angel named Uziel soon finds Simon and attacks him, but is defeated and killed by Simon, who does so by ripping out Uziel's heart. A police officer named Daggett is asked to investigate the cause of death after Uziel's corpse is found after falling out of a window and being hit by a car. Peculiarities of Uziel's corpse intrigue Daggett, who years ago balked at finalizing his priestly vows because of a last-minute lapse of faith. A search of Uziel's apartment uncovers a hand-written, second-century Bible containing a heretofore unknown concluding chapter of Revelations. Daggett uses his knowledge of ancient Greek to begin translating the "new" chapter. Meanwhile the angel Gabriel, in the form of Christopher Walken, is intent on recovering Hawthorne's soul, which Gabriel believes will allow him to win the stalemated war in Heaven over the elevation of men over angels. He finds, interrogates and tortures Simon, who refuses to reveal where he has hidden Hawthorne's soul. Gabriel finally kills Simon, and with dogged determination eventually discovers that Simon had deposited the soul into a little girl named Mary. Daggett and Mary's teacher, Katherine, somehow block Gabriel's efforts to "rip her body apart" to acquire Hawthorne's soul, but it seems clear that Gabriel will eventually succeed. Lucifer then makes a surprise appearance and gives Daggett advice on how to outwit Gabriel. See the movie to learn Lucifer's motivation. Daggett uses the advice successfully, Gabriel is caught off-guard by Lucifer, who then destroys Gabriel, tempts and taunts Daggett and Katherine, and, when rebuffed, disappears. When Gabriel dies, Hawthorne's dark soul is cast out of Mary and apparently destroyed. Daggett and Katherine apparently end up together, and Daggett recovers his faith.
