Stars Step Up to Fight Ebola

17 October 2014 3:55 PM, PDT | Entertainment Tonight | See recent Entertainment Tonight news »

Celebs are raising awareness for ebola and learning how life imitates art.

Hollywood celebrities are stepping up to raise money and awareness to fight the ebola outbreak that has killed thousands in West Africa and recently spread to the United States. Stars such as David Beckham, Whoopi Goldberg, and Idris Elba are speaking out and making PSAs to spark a public response to the disease.

Footloose star Kevin Bacon went back to his dance roots to contribute to the #ShakeOffEbola social media campaign with a viral video.

"It was specifically about trying to raise money for another care facility in Sierra Leone, and it was an idea based on the fact that West Africa has a long history of dance," the actor said. "It’s obviously something we have to take as seriously as possible."

Some critics believe Hollywood is late to the cause.

Ebola Tale "Hot Zone" Comes To TV

"The Hot Zone", Richard Preston's Ebola virus-themed 1994 best-seller, will score a limited TV series adaptation with the help of Producer Lynda Obst and director-producer Ridley Scott.

A sensation upon its release, the non-fiction thriller deals primarily with the history of the virus including an outbreak of Marburg virus in a Nairobi hospital. It also deals with the outbreak of a form of Ebola in a monkey house in Virginia.

Obst and Scott optioned "The Hot Zone" two decades ago and for the past year have been working on adapting the property with Preston's help. The pair have also hired "I, Robot" scribe Jeff Vintar to adapt the script.

The project has taken on a new urgency though as the current outbreak of Ebola in West Africa, which has ravaged several countries and could potentially spread beyond the region. Preston is writing a piece for next week's New Yorker magazine which chronicles the current outbreak, »

My guilty pleasure: Outbreak

Spread the word Wolfgang Petersen's brilliantly terrifying film about a deadly virus coughs up a cast to die for

More from My guilty pleasure

Imagine how much scarier Jaws would be if Jaws could fly. And was invisible. And if he multiplied at an alarming rate and spread all over America killing every single American, and then set his sights on the rest of the world. It would be incredibly scary, and what's more, you don't have to imagine. This brilliant, terrifying film was released in 1995 and I've seen it about 20 times since. My commitment is testament to the genius of Outbreak or "the Jaws of the 90s" as its director Wolfgang Petersen called it.

Outbreak is the story of the fictional "Motaba" virus, which is like Ebola only So Much Worse. First you get pale lips, red-rimmed eyes and a sweaty face, which represent horrible flu-like symptoms. Within »

The Overlooked Hotel – Jt Walsh

12 March 2014 5:00 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

The Overlooked Hotel, having found a spare room for Stephen Tobolowsky, now welcomes another deserving guest, the late, great Jt Walsh. You know, that really talented guy from that thing you really like.

Jt Walsh, in many ways the definitive supporting character actor, passed away suddenly in 1998. He succumbed to a heart attack at the relatively tender age of 54, but left behind a quite astonishingly varied and accomplished body of work, despite never being nominated for anything other than a Primetime Emmy and a couple of SAG cast awards. If nothing else, this amply demonstrates that far too often, real talent goes unrewarded and although (of course) not every0ne can be lavished with awards and in any given year the same performance is likely to hoover up every award going, the fact that Walsh never received an Oscar, Golden Globe or SAG award (or even a solo nomination) is a glaring omission. »

What does Kevin Spacey have to do to win a Golden Globe?

13 January 2014 8:28 AM, PST | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

As of Sunday night, Andy Samberg has a Golden Globe but Kevin Spacey still doesn’t. Indeed, these are strange times. time undefeated Oscar winner has now gone through seven Golden Globe races without a single win. Spacey earned his first bid for his critically acclaimed turn in 1995’s “The Usual Suspects.” That was a banner year for the Tony winner, who also appeared in “Seven” and “Outbreak.” He lost the Globe to his “Seven” co-star Brad Pitt for “Twelve Monkeys.” However, Spacey got his revenge when he prevailed on Oscar night in an extremely competitive Supporting Actor race. Spacey became a usual awards suspect four years later, when the HFPA nominated him for Best Actor in “American Beauty.” While the film won Best Drama (plus Best Director for Sam Mendes and Best Screenplay,) Spacey was wiped out by Denzel W »
