Kaleidoscope 2009: Important Music Events (Part 1/4)

28 December 2009 2:19 AM, PST | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

In celebration of new year which comes around the corner, several major events and important announcements happening in music are compiled. Among those many things that need to be remembered, Aretha Franklin's performance at Barack Obama's presidential inauguration, Blink-182's reunion confirmation and Michael Jackson's "Final Curtain Call" announcement are chosen as highlighted events. On top of that, AceShowbiz also takes readers to look back at music videos which have been premiered in the first quarter of the year.

Part I: Event

January

Aretha Franklin delivered Samuel Francis Smith-written patriotic song "My Country 'Tis of Thee" at Barack Obama's presidential inauguration in Washington D.C. on January 20. Two days prior to her performance at the free gig, another party celebrating Obama's presidential victory was also held, this time featuring live performances from such big stars as Beyonce Knowles, Bruce Springsteen and will.i.am. 5 Things to Know About Mgmt

11 December 2009 4:40 PM, PST | PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news »

Their psychedelic pop songs "Kids" and "Time to Pretend" off their album Oracular Spectacular are instantly recognizable, but Mgmt - the New York duo Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser - never intended to become household names. "Being famous was never the goal," VanWyngarden, 26, told the Honolulu Advertiser earlier this year of how he and Goldwasser, 27, started the band after meeting as freshmen at Wesleyan University. "We acted like pop stars on our campus of 3,000 people. We would play little living room parties and act like we were playing stadiums. It was all part of the joke." That "joke" has now »

Best. Gay. Week. Ever. (December 11, 2009)

11 December 2009 4:42 AM, PST | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

And What A Very Gay Week It Was!

Man, this week it just seemed like one fricking thing after another. If New Jersey legislators weren't getting cold feet about gay marriage, then Details was peddling incredibly stupid and homophobic humor while Uganda was debating executing gays and As the World Turns was getting canceled and GLAAD was flailing all over the place like a spastic octopus. Well, I guess the only thing to do is make fun of it all. Or die trying!

How do you solve a problem like Buju Banton? Many in the Glbt community were less than delighted when a Grammy nomination went to uber-homophobe reggae artist Buju Banton. GLAAD started an online petition urging the academy to reject Buju for a Grammy while others are urging a boycott of Grammy sponsors. (And others still are asking if GLAAD knows what GLAAD is doing.)

Today's stars! Well not literally today's but November 18th. Get a little history. Celebrate one of these cinematic entities today in whatever way occurs to you.

Senors Gilbert, Hemmings and Infante

1836 W.S. Gilbert of 'Gilbert & Sullivan' legend. If you've never seen Mike Leigh's exceptional biopic of this creative giant, Topsy-Turvy, drop everything right now and do so.

1908 Imogene Coca beloved comic actress, mostly known for TV roles

1917 Pedro Infante Mexico's biggest movie star ever. Here he is singing. Pedro Almodóvar fans will recognize this one immediately

AFI La 09: Review of Harmony Korine's Trash Humpers

Year: 2009

Directors: Harmony Korine

Writers: Harmony Korine

IMDb: link

Rating: 8.8 out of 10

Right. Trash Humpers is a snapped work of brilliance and you will either be blown away or absolutely hate it. For me, the earth moved. Korine’s movie was shot on VHS and edited on VHS machines, and in the director’s own words, it’s like a piece of “found footage,” like some kind of crazy old VHS tape “you find in a ziploc bag in the attic.” The grainy analogue look immediately creates a scary marginal aura that’s more effective than several million dollars of CGI. Tell you what, if I found one of those tape in my attic I’d be well jumpy.

There is no story to this whacked out vision of the underclass, but there are a series of amazing scenes. Two old guys and an »

'Entourage's' Doug Ellin Explains: For the Kids

5 October 2009 5:24 PM, PDT | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

By Sharon Waxman

Folks -- how great was the "Entourage" finale last night? That Matt Damon -- we always thought he was a nice guy. Turns out he’s really mean. And aggressive. In the name of raising money for his kids charity, onexone. As if that’s any excuse.

I mean, the guy scowled his way  through the entire episode. (Even meaner than he was as Tom Ripley, and that guy's a serial killer.) And he badgered that nice Adrian Grenier into giving lots of money ‘for the kids.’    Come to think of it, Bono was pretty mean, too.

Nyff '09 Podcast: Harmony Korine

2 October 2009 4:42 PM, PDT | GreenCine Daily | See recent GreenCine Daily news »

Since first making his name as the screenwriter of Larry Clark's Kids, Harmony Korine has been slapped with the provocateur label for directing such oddball films as Gummo, julien donkey-boy, and last year's Mister Lonely, all of which are filled with subversive imagery, off-kilter characters, and confrontational moments that are unclear whether they're meant to be laughed with or cringed at. Korine's latest is the as-yet-undistributed curio Trash Humpers, which screens at the 2009 New York Film Festival: The title is to be taken literally. Harmony Korine revisits the backwater horrors of Gummo, this time with a cruddy, bargain-basement form to match the degraded content. The episodic tale of a band of cretins (among them a masked and wigged Harmony and Rachel Korine) who go around brutalizing dolls, molesting plant life, and—yes—rubbing up against garbage cans, Trash Humpers suggests an exhumed underground movie, or a new form of freak-folk art. »

London Film Festival: Trash Humpers

30 September 2009 4:26 AM, PDT | t5m.com | See recent t5m.com news »

Director: Harmony Korine A film should, according to Godard, have a beginning, middle, and end (even if they aren’t in that particular order). I am, personally, a huge fan of this ideal. It is the careful structuring of a story that engages the audiences and whisks them away into the world of the characters. I am willing to make allowances in certain cases: I would argue that many of John Cassavetes’ films lacked any coherent structure, and yet they still proved to be some of the most engaging, powerful, and dramatic explorations of character in the history of the cinema. But then, Cassavetes was exploring fascinating people that we can all engage with: a distraught husband who has lost the ability to reach out to his mentally-frail wife; an ageing actress who has lost the will to carry on; a strip-club owner who has forgotten why he loves the Sunset strip. »

The contribution begins with all sales taking place after October 1.

Harmony Korine’s Trash Humpers Trailer

10 September 2009 9:11 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

There are a lot of weird filmmakers out there in the world, but there is only one Harmony Korine. After getting his start as the writer of Larry Clark's Kids, he went on to direct his first feature-length film Gummo, and from there has continued to shock and confuse audiences with his aggressively anti-mainstream projects. He would be an easy guy to write off if he wasn't so good at capturing striking imagery and exploring strange subcultures. I don't always love his movies, but at least you know you can count on them offering something out of the ordinary. His latest film Trash Humpers premieres at the Toronto Film Festival this weekend, and I think the lo-fi trailer for said film can easily be summed up with a simple... Wtf? The movie apparently follows a group of elderly people (read: actors wearing old man make-up a la Jackass) who »

Jennifer's Body - Music From The Motion Picture (Review)

24 August 2009 10:00 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Putting together a proper motion picture soundtrack is something of a lost art. Often thought of as a final step in packaging a film for it's final release, many films suffer from a lack of care when it comes to a proper sonic counterpart. While original scores can set the mood and tone of a film, working brilliantly for epics that require no "pop" or "rock" enhancement, in some cases the latter works better and that's usually where the problems start to show. When done correctly, a proper soundtrack should conjure images of the film for listeners long after the last flicker of the projector, or the final screen of the DVD.

The first decade of the "new millennium" has been overtly devoid of memorable soundtracks for the horror genre (sans a few exceptions), as if the music supervisor was brought on-board last-minute and given a tiny budget to work with. »

Dawson Gets Aboard 'Unstoppable'

19 August 2009 12:20 AM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

The future Denzel Washington-Tony Scott collaboration continues to live up to its namesake. Once threatened with derailment, the runaway train thriller Unstoppable has just snapped up its latest cast member.

According to a tweet over at Production Weekly's Twitter page, Rosario Dawson has signed on for the 20th Century Fox production, which will also star Chris Pine and is scheduled for a November 12, 2010 release date. The plot of Unstoppable revolves around a train engineer and conductor racing against time to stop an unmanned locomotive carrying toxic chemicals. No word yet if Dawson will be playing the love interest of either Washington or Pine’s characters, or perhaps something else altogether.

Earlier this summer, Unstoppable nearly fell off the tracks due to budgetary concerns. After Washington declined to shave $4 million off his upfront salary, the project spent a short time in limbo, but writer Mark Bomback delivered a fresh »

Artist: Ryan McGinley  "Brennan (Clear Poncho), 2007"

"People fall in love with McGinley's work because it tells a story about liberation and hedonism: Where Goldin and Larry Clark were saying something painful and anxiety producing about Kids and what happens when they take drugs and have sex in an ungoverned urban underworld, McGinley started out announcing that “The Kids Are Alright,” fantastic, really, and suggested that a gleeful, unfettered subculture was just around the corner—still—if only you knew where to look."
