Dimple Kapadia's reason for leaving the role of Gayatri Devi was because she was not comfortable playing a mother-in-law to Juhi Chawla who was a few years younger than her. She signed the film expecting to play the mother-in-law of Divya Bharti who died later during the shooting of the film.

Tabu was offered the lead role but she had a condition. She wanted the producer to pay Divya Bharti's parents the remaining money owed to Divya Bharti for the film.Tabu wanted this as she was best friends with Divya Bharti. The producer declined the condition.

The producers had promised Dimple that Jackie Shroff would be signed opposite her. Knowing this she signed the film. But Jackie refused the film. Raj Kiran was signed to replace him. Dimple started having problems with the producers. She walked out of the film because she did nit want to be Juhi's mother in law.
