After seeing the amazing performance Clint Howard did in the classic Holiday Horror, "Silent Night, Deadly Night Part 4: Initiation", and his brief cameo appearance in "Silent Night, Deadly Night Part 5: The Toy Maker", I just HAD to see "Ice Cream Man". A movie that I have heard about and seen in video stores for years, but never actually saw. And boy, I wish I had seen this back in 1995 when it first came out. I was 12 at that time, and I think I would have liked this movie even more back then. But I still like it now though. The movie was different from other horror movies because it did not have teenagers as the helpless victims, but it actually had pre-teens as the victims. So this movie did seem more like it was meant for middle school kids, and seemed liked a "Kids Horror Movie". But do not get the wrong idea. It was not at all like a Disney Horror movie. It had LOTS of gore and some pretty nasty scenes that could make a viewer with a weak stomach puke their guts out. And could make anyone who is eating, gag and/or spit their food out, and hit the fast-forward button or turn away.
The story starts off on a warm summer day where a little boy named Gregory sees the local Ice Cream Man get shot and killed by gangsters. Sounds interesting, but sadly the film makers never bothered to explore Gregory's mind after that. After that we see Gregory as an adult and he is the new Ice Cream Man. Now I suppose the audience is left to assume that Gregory seeing the Ice Cream Man get killed when he was a kid, scarred Gregory, because through out the whole movie Gregory always has these flash backs of him when he was a young boy in a Mental Hospital. However, Gregory is still very insane and pretty much hunts down all the little kids in the area. That's pretty much what the whole movie is about. And I thought it was a good one. I do not want to spoil it for you, so check it out sometime if you have not seen it.
And those who hate it, well.....say what you want about this cheesy B-rated horror flick, but this movie cracked me up. For kids, it would seem like a horror movie. But for everyone else, it was a dark comedy. And as sick as this sounds, the kids in this movie got on my nerves, so it was kind of fun seeing ol' Clint stalk and scare them to death. Clint Howard is such a great actor. And does a good job of playing creepy roles and should do more horror movies.
