Because this was a major box office bomb during the film's original theatrical release, the film was soon rushed to home video. However, it has managed to gain a cult following ever since among Gumby fans.
Lucky Claybert is based on Groucho Marx and W.C. Fields in appearance and voice, respectively.
In April 2007, a director's cut version of the movie was shown at the Tribeca Family Film Festival. This version of the film in 77 minutes was released on DVD by Genius Products, LLC on April 22, 2008.
Production on the film was completed in 1992, four years after production began, but Premavision was unable to find a distributor until 1995, when they found a small film studio called Arrow Releasing. Also, after the film's completion, most of the animators who worked on the film went to work on Henry Selick's The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993).
