Not so much about religion, but politics
18 October 2001 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

Gospa is a nice little low budget movie which tells the true story of six children seeing visions of the Virgin Mary in Medjugorje (perhaps one of the most controversial miracles) circa 1981. The priest of this small village, Father Jozo Sovko (Martin Sheen) very much believes that these six children have seen Gospa, although he has not see the vision himself. Still, millions of Catholics come to the small church by the day to watch the children talk to the Virgin Mary, concerning the government.

After preaching a sermon that seems to be against the country's communistic government, Sovko find himself brutally tortured and even imprisoned, but refuses to say what the government tells him to. Despite attorney York's attempt to prove Sovko's innocence, it's clear that most of the citizens fear a political uprising.

What I believe the movie wishes to depict, is the struggle between religion and government. We can understand what the characters are going through, whether you choose to believe in the apparitions or not. I think part of this has to do with the direction the film took.

Overall, Gospa is a well-made film, but not for those who expect to see Mary in big white clouds, or the sun falling from the sky or any other kind of miracle in the optical sense, but rather in the sense of human conflict, ending in the protection of the faith.
