Dirty Old Town

Shades of Trading Places or The Prince and the Pauper.

Rik Mayall plays Raymond, a vagrant living rough in London. Vic Leigh (Brian McCardie) is an aspiring screenwriter who has just finished a movie script.

As Vic rushes across London for a meeting with film executive Jeremy Swain (Michael Kitchen.) The lives of three men literally collide.

Swain's taxi hits Raymond and collides into Vic's bike. His script ends up next to Raymond who gets mistaken for Vic by Claire (Helen McCrory) who is Swain's personal assistant.

Once Swain reads Vic's script. He knows this is diamond and rushes to get the movie greenlit.

Raymond who claims he is no writer, finds that his prospects are improving. His live is suddenly upwardly mobile.

Meanwhile poor Vic, with no money, no script, injured. His life goes on a downward spiral. He ends up living on the streets.

Regarded as a satirical tragedy. It does miss the target a fair bit. The drama does well in highlighting the shallowness of media folk.

Dirty Old Town does have something to say about how people could easily hit rock bottom. When Raymond is spruced up, other people ask him for money.

While Vic finds himself getting beaten up by a yuppie, before Raymond comes to his rescue. It just did not work for me.

A serious Rik Mayall
ian19938 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
One of Rik Mayalls more serious roles about an alcoholic homeless man accidentally acquiring a script and the luxurious life of a writer.

This film has few laughs for what we're used to seeing from Rik Mayall, but he was amazing in a serious drama setting.

If you love a good story with a few twists then this is definitely for you.
