Shah Rukh Khan has said he hated being called the 'King of Romance'. While the actor began his career playing the anti-hero in films such as Baazigar and Darr, he later became synonymous with the romantic characters he portrayed in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.
According to Pti, the Jab Tak Hai Jaan star said: "I can proclaim that girls love me in romantic roles. With all due respect, I would rather be called a 'King' than the 'King of Romance'. Denied Kashmir, the great director turned to the English Lake District, Scotland and London as the background for ringing, singing declarations of on-screen love
The veteran Bollywood director, Yash Chopra, passed away this week at the age of 80. His death came just weeks before his much anticipated new release, Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012) was due to hit the big screen. Yash Chopra may have been one of the greatest filmmakers in the history of Indian cinema, yet he will always be remembered as his country's king of celluloid romance.
During a career of 53 years he launched some of Indian cinema's most iconic and commercially successful films. Smash hits such as Waqt (1965), Kabhi Kabhie (1976), Silsila (1981), Lamhe (1991) and Veer-Zaara (2004) captured the essence of Yash Chopra's sensibility – a highly-stylised presentation of the emotional dilemmas of the super-rich. If Yash Chopra's heroes were handsome fighter pilots or brooding poets, then his heroines »

Karan Johar has said he believes that Bollywood provides a strong connection to India for diaspora audiences. The Student of the Year director was speaking at an event hosted by Visit Britain to announce his role as their Global Tourism ambassador. The 40-year-old filmmaker explained that, while he does not think Indian cinema could change British society, he feels it has strongly influenced the British Asian communities of the UK.
"Bollywood changing Britain?" he said. "I don't think we have that kind of power. Possibly what it's done is, our films were very popular in the '70s and then the video market kicked in. People stopped going back to the cinemas and then it was back again with Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge when the India diaspora market woke up again to our films. "The influences are in the sensibilities so (more) »

Indian filmmakers, both large and small, have a thing about young adults from the diaspora rediscovering the beauty of their ancestral home. Many times this takes place as a physical discovery, as desi* youth visit India for the first time and fall in love, as in The Namesake. Other times it takes place as a form of re-awakening of the inborn Indian within these young men and women who discover the beauty and grace of the old traditions, as in all-time blockbuster Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. These kinds of films go back decades, and I have to admit, they make a good case for India's beauty and atmosphere. This is the kind of film that Abosheshey is, but it is so much more. The first »
