Robert Rodriguez Talks Sin City: A Dame to Kill For's Look and Machete Kills' Villain

21 May 2012 1:37 PM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Director Robert Rodriguez (Desperado, Spy Kids) has a busy summer of sequels planned for this year, including the long-awaited sequel to 2005's Sin City, titled Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, and Machete Kills, the follow-up to Rodriguez's 2010 fake-trailer-turned-Grindhouse-homage Machete.

Still based on co-director Frank Miller's Sin City comic books (namely, A Dame to Kill For) the Sin City sequel was written by Miller and The Departed screenwriter William Monahan. At the Cannes Film Festival, Rodriguez told Empire that the sequel will continue the stylistic look of the original and could look even more like Miller's original comic book artwork.

I really held back the first time, because I didn’t know whether audiences would go for it. So it ended up looking like a real movie, but in black and white, with a few flourishes. This one is going to push way further towards the books. »

Antonio Banderas Might Join 'Machete Kills' Cast

26 April 2012 9:01 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

We didn't think it was possible, but "Machete Kills" might actually end up having an even more insane cast than "Machete" did. In addition to Danny Trejo reprising his role as the titular character, we've already learned that Mel Gibson has a part in the movie. And that's not the only person likely-director Robert Rodriguez has turned to.

When MTV News caught up with Antonio Banderas at CinemaCon earlier this week, we couldn't resist asking him if Rodriguez had talked to him about taking a role in the movie. The two have a long film history together, with Rodriguez directing Banderas in everything from "Desperado" to "Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over." And it turns out that, yes, Rodriguez has pitched the idea of "a little cameo" to Banderas, and the "Puss in Boots" star is totally game for it.

Robert Rodriguez Reminisces About His Early Film 'Roadracers'

24 April 2012 10:01 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Robert Rodriguez loves "Roadracers," a film he made on a sliver of a budget in between his indie hit "El Mariachi" and his breakout "Desperado."

He told me that much almost as soon as he got on the phone. "I love 'Roadracers,' " he said. "It is one of my favorite movies." You could hear the excitement in his voice.

And he has a reason to be excited. After years of attempting to get "Roadracers" out on DVD and then eventually Blu-ray, Rodriguez finally succeeded with the April 17 release in high definition. Part of the reason it had taken so long to hit video was because of the film's origins.

"It was a movie made for cable, so it never had any real presence. It was always 'We'll put it out when we put out "Sin City." ' Then that would come and go," Rodriguez said. "It was one »

Exclusive: William Sadler Talks Roadracers Blu-ray

18 April 2012 1:34 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Director Robert Rodriguez burst onto the scene with his ultra-indie El Mariachi, and he was in high demand throughout Hollywood. While his 1995 action classic Desperado is considered his studio debut, the filmmaker also made Roadracers, this 1994 homage to 1950s movies, which makes its Blu-ray debut April 17. This 50s drama features some of the first big screen performances from David Arquette, Salma Hayek, and John Hawkes, along with a fantastic turn from William Sadler, who plays Sarge, the cop who is constantly trying to bust David Arquette's Dude Delaney. I recently had the chance to speak with William Sadler about playing this hardened cop. Take a look at what he had to say.

This came out the same year as The Shawshank Redemption, so I was curious if you shot Roadracers before that?

William Sadler: If I'm not mistaken, I think I shot this before I shot Shawshank. I'm not certain about that, »

New Bad Ass Trailer Shows Danny Trejo Fighting People

2 April 2012 5:00 PM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Playing a .bad-ass. type character isn.t exactly groundbreaking material for an actor like Danny Trejo, with tough-guy roles in films like Desperado, Grindhouse and Machete under his belt, not to mention TV appearances in Breaking Bad and Sons of Anarchy. But he sure is good at it. By the title alone, Bad Ass cuts straight to the point in describing Trejo.s character, and the trailer backs it up with lots of punching. Bad Ass stars Trejo as a Vietnam veteran who defends a man on a bus and ends up becoming a local hero when a video of the fight shows up online. Rounding out the cast are Ron Perlman and Charles S. Dutton. The previously released trailer for the Craig Moss directed film Bad Ass sells Trejo.s character Frank Vega as .mean,. .angry,. and .old.. Second Opinion - John Carter (2012)

16 March 2012 12:39 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

John Carter, 2012.

Directed by Andrew Stanton.

Starring Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Willem Dafoe, Mark Strong, Samantha Morton, Ciarán Hinds, Dominic West, Thomas Haden Church, James Purefoy and Bryan Cranston.

Synopsis:

Former Confederate Captain John Carter (Taylor Kitsch) has abandoned civilization for life alone on the American frontier searching for gold. He’s confronted by a strange entity and is transported to Mars (Barsoom) where he’s caught up in the conflict between the warring nations of the planet. He has to decide whether to join the fight, or whether to try to get home.

John Carter is an outstanding achievement of literary adaptation. Andrew Stanton and company have produced a tightly scripted, rollicking sci-fi adventure that is must see on the big screen and, like me (in Homer-salivating voice), see it on IMAX! Stanton honours the source material and creates a richly textured aesthetic, but most importantly it’s a »

Robert Rodriguez To Shoot Both ‘Sin City 2′ & ‘Machete’ Sequel This Year

14 March 2012 9:52 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Texas-based independent filmmaker Robert Rodriguez (naturally) showed up at the South by Southwest (SXSW) 2012 Film Festival, where – in addition to performing a handful of tunes from the original soundtracks for his films like Desperado, From Dusk Till Dawn, and Machete – he revealed that he is launching a new animation company called Quickdraw Animation, which will specialize in CG-animated fare, ranging from family-friendly flicks to a long-planned Heavy Metal movie.

However, the “big” news (as far as many Rodriguez fans are concerned) that the filmmaker had to offer is that he intends to begin shooting the long-delayed Sin City 2 later this year, after completing production on the sequel, Machete Kills.

When word got out earlier this year that Rodriguez’ next directorial effort is going to be a Machete sequel, many ...

Zorro Reborn may have found a director

7 March 2012 3:54 PM, PST | JoBlo.com | See recent JoBlo news »

I don't know about the rest of you, but I actually enjoyed Antonio Banderas as Zorro. The character was a perfect fit for his persona in my opinion. Just as the El Mariachi character was in Desperado. So when I heard they were going to reboot Zorro, I wondered who was going to fill those perfect shoes. Then it was announced that Gael García Bernal would be taking on the role in Zorro Reborn and I was floored that I didn't think of that casting first. Go rewatch Y Tu Mama Tambien if you »

Olé for 33 Dias if it shows the heroism of Pablo Picasso's Guernica

23 February 2012 7:52 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Thanks to surviving photographs and preliminary sketches, this film has the chance to really capture how the artist made Guernica

Antonio Banderas as Pablo Picasso? Cool. The casting of the star of Desperado, Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! and, er, Puss in Boots as the greatest artist of the 20th century is very promising. I mean, he's not simply Spanish but Andalusian. What's more, Banderas was born in Picasso's own birthplace, Malaga. That has to be better than the Welsh Picasso of a previous biopic.

Plausible casting is not the only promising thing about 33 Dias, to be directed by Carlos Saura. It sounds as if it will be a potentially insightful view of an artist at work. For it is all about the making of Guernica – not simply the most powerful political work of art of modern times, but also the outcome of an unusually well-documented creative process. »

Antonio Banderas Set to Play Pablo Picasso in '33 Days'

21 February 2012 6:04 AM, PST | National Ledger | See recent National Ledger news »

Antonio Banderas will play Pablo Picasso in '33 Days'. The 'Desperado' star will portray the surrealist painter in a biopic, which charts the artist's emotional struggle while working on his masterpiece mural 'Guernica'. The film will be directed by Carlos Saura and will also examine the relationship between Picasso and his French lover Dora Marr, who was with him at the time he made 'Guernica' - his reaction to the destruction of the titular town during the Spanish civil war. Picasso - who died in 1973 - is a character who has long been close to Antonio, as they come from the same city, Malaga, on Spain's southern coast. Antonio, 51, told El Pais newspaper: "He is a character that followed me for a long time, but had always rejected it. He deserves a lot of respect because I am Malagan. "I was born four blocks from where he was born. »

Rodriguez Announces “Machete” Sequel

6 February 2012 8:26 PM, PST | FamousMonsters of Filmland | See recent Famous Monsters of Filmland news »

Making the leap from Spy Kids 4 back into bloody dismemberment, comes indie (for a second) icon Robert Rodriguez, having just announced his follow-up to 2010′s Machete. Danny Trejo had been deserving of a vehicle all his own for decades, always playing the heavy, the thug, the background pockmarked muscle, and after the faux trailer of the same name in 2007′s Grindhouse left a mark with audiences, Machete was born and Trejo finally had his moment in the sun, with a trench full of blades, a woman on each arm, and a trail of bodies behind him.

Now Trejo and the Desperado director are back together in preparation for what is tentatively titled Machete Kills!. Rodriguez shared the plotline with Deadline Hollywood as follows…

“The new film finds Machete recruited by the U.S. Government for a mission which would be impossible for any mortal man. Machete must battle his way »

Robert Rodriguez's Machete Kills Eyes April Start

6 February 2012 | Comingsoon.net | See recent Comingsoon.net news »

Robert Rodriguez appears set to move forward on his next project, Machete Kills , Deadline reports. The script is now completed and production is being targeted for this April. Though the sequel is based on his 2010 film, Machete , that film was, in turn, based on a fake trailer that Rodriguez created for part of 2007's Grindhouse and the character dates back even further to an ongoing joke between the director and the star, Danny Trejo. In fact, the decidedly R-rated character actually makes his first on-screen appearance in 2001's Spy Kids . "We had always had the idea for the real 'Machete' movie ever since I knew [Danny] back when we did 'Desperado,'" Rodriguez told ComingSoon.net late last year . "We never thought we'd get around to making it, so »

Watch Original John Carter Test Footage from Kerry Conran

John Carter probably holds the record for the film with the longest time in development hell (that is, studios try to put a film together and it collapses). Since 1931, many filmmakers--including "Looney Tunes" director Bob Clampett, famed stop motion animator Ray Harryhausen, Terminator producer Mario Kassar and Die Hard director John McTiernan, Desperado director Robert Rodriguez, and Iron Man director Jon Favreau--have taken a shot at developing a screen version of Edgar Rice Burroughs' character and his adventures on Mars. 81 years later, two-time Oscar winner Andrew Stanton (Finding Nemo, Wall*E) makes his live-action debut with John Carter.

But while the film was still in the hands of Paramount Pictures (after Rodriguez had left the project), they gave it to Kerry Conran, famous for his epic period adventure, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. He was given the opportunity to make a test reel, adhering to the »
