Parents Guide for
Braveheart (1995) More at IMDbPro »

The content of this page was created directly by users and has not been screened or verified by IMDb staff.
Since the beliefs that parents want to instill in their children can vary greatly, we ask that, instead of adding your personal opinions about what is right or wrong in a film, you use this feature to help parents make informed viewing decisions by describing the facts of relevant scenes in the title for each one of the different categories: Sex and Nudity, Violence and Gore, Profanity, Alcohol/Drugs/Smoking, and Frightening/Intense Scenes.

Sex & Nudity

Note: The number at the beginning of each section refers to how explicit that aspect of the film is on a scale of 1-10. The fraction at the end of the Frightening/Intense Scenes category is the total sum of all the sections out of the highest sum possible (50) and therefore an approximation of how much explicit content of any kind is in the film.

Rating: 7/10

A man tries to rape a woman. He lays on top of her and kisses and licks the side of her face. She tries to escape and bites him. He calls her a, "bitch" and slaps her. Might be disturbing to some.

The king passes a law that nobles may have sexual relations with women on the night of their wedding. So later, a man takes a another man's wife to deflower her on their wedding day (implied only).

Wallace and his wife have sex. We see them both naked looking at each other, from the shoulders up. Then we see her topless from the side (bare breasts and nipples shown for several seconds). Wallace walks toward her and they embrace naked.

A large number of men lift their kilts to expose their genitals and wave them at the enemy. This is shown from a distance, so nothing is clear. Later, they expose their buttocks and we see this at a closer range.

Violence & Gore

Rating: 10/10

There a several battle scenes of significant length. Amounts of blood are shown. Men are stabbed, sliced, decapitated, and dismembered frequently, with a little amount of blood. Hammers and maces are used to bash in skulls and chests. Men have their heads sliced in half and their faces stabbed with gory results. At one point, a man has a sword shoved into his genitals (shown from behind briefly). Etc, etc. Very bloody, graphic, and disturbing.

Men are often showered with arrows, which pierce their heads, chests, limbs, and in one case, exposed buttocks, with an appropriate amount of blood shown.

A man is tortured and killed. First he is half-hanged - we see him choking and struggling until he is let down. Then he is stretched and we see his pained expressions. Next, he is lain on a table and his shirt is ripped open. We see his torturers pick up a knife, and then see his expressions of anguish as they disembowel him (the disemboweling itself is not shown). Finally, he has his head chopped off with an axe; we don't see this either, we just see a handkerchief fall from his hand.

A severed head is pulled out of a box in close-up. It is not shown for very long, but is fairly disturbing.

A man his his throat slit, and we see a large gash on his neck with blood pouring from it.

Ten or fifteen bloody bodies of men, women, and children hang from nooses in an old barn/outhouse. The camera lingers over their faces, and they are shown for about a minute.

A man's face is crushed by a ball and chain. We see a brief flash of blood pouring from his crushed skull.

A recently deceased man with a gaping chest wound lies dead on a stone table, being washed. This man is shortly after seen in a dream sequence.

A young man is hurled from a window and falls to his death. From a distance, we see blood pooling next to his head.

A bleeding corpse is dropped from a balcony onto a table as men sit for a meal. The man's body has a large wound on its neck.

A soldier slits a woman's throat with a knife; the shot is from the back - nothing graphic is shown.

Boiling oil is poured down onto troops causing the wounded to writhe in agony on the ground. The oil is then lit. Burning men stagger around engulfed in flames.

A cavalry charge is stopped by a row of sharpened wooden spears. There are multiple shots of spears plunging into horse's bodies causing bloody wounds.

Profanity

Rating: 5/10

Three f-words. One or two uses of "b**ch." Three or four uses of "s**t" and more than five uses of "b*****d." A few uses of "h**l" and "d**n."

Rating: 2/10

People are shown drinking.

A woman offers man a drink to drug him so that he won't feel pain while being tortured.

Rating: 8/10

Braveheart is an emotional intense film. It may be hard for some to watch due to the sexuality and violence and gore. The movie is never scary but holds an intense atmosphere. The almost-rape scene is very intense, and the film from there on is intense.

An idea of how accurate the TECE (below) is: 5-10 is a little-kid suitable, G-Rated type of film (i.e. Care Bears, Sleeping Beauty); 10-15 is going to be a little harsher, but not by much (i.e. The Incredibles); 15-20 could be pretty high up there (i.e. Indiana Jones), 20-25 is good for anyone around 12 (i.e. The Dark Knight); 25-30 is going to be a film most likely not suitable for anyone that is grossed out easily. (i.e. Braveheart); 30-40 is recommended for around 14 and up. (i.e. This). 40 and up is pretty much R / NC-17 (i.e. Clockwork Orange)
