Storyline

Wayne Wang's follow-up movie to Smoke presents a series of improvisational situations strung together to form a pastiche of Brooklyn's diverse ethnicity, offbeat humor, and essential humanity. Many of the same characters inhabiting Auggie Wren's Brooklyn Cigar Store in Smoke return here to expound on their philosophy of smoking, relationships, baseball, New York, and Belgian Waffles. Most of all, this is a movie about living life, off-the-cuff. Written by Tad Dibbern <DIBBERN_D@a1.mscf.upenn.edu>

Trivia

The scene with Giancarlo Esposito, Stephen Gevedon, Jose Zuniga, and Malik Yoba took all day to film. The extremely hot temperature combined with the lack of script made it difficult for the actor to improvise a good scene. After many takes, Harvey Keitel secretly told Peggy Gormley to slap Gevedon in the scene to garner an energetic reaction. That take is used in the film. But the long day took a toll on director Wayne Wang who was suffering from bronchitis, so Paul Auster stepped as director for the next two days. See more »

Good for them
11 August 2001 | by (Portugal) – See all my reviews

I wish I could make a movie this funny and so easily. Five days, improvisations, not a definite storyline and a great and funny movie is born. I loved it, it still makes me laugh and will keep on making me laugh. All the actors are great, but if I had to give an award to one of them it would be Jim Jarmusch, with his "last cigarette" speech. Fantastic also is Lou Reed, and his conclusions about life. The movie really benefits from its addition of well-known stars, including a much-in-the-gutter character Michael J. Fox, which is really funny. The film also includes some curiosities about Brooklyn, and works not only as a set of vignettes but also as an account of what's typical and traditional in that neighbourhood. It has some cool moments and some touching moments, but overall it's a movie to see and not to analyse.
