Starts off well but quickly reverts to TVM tepidness - 47%

The problem with there being so many TV channels available on satellite is that no matter how obscure or niche they may be, they still have to find something to plug the schedules with. And this is the situation on the True Entertainment channel, which floods your living room with endless TV movies and repeats of "The Waltons". Normally, I would rather play chicken with a freight train than subject myself to anything on such a channel but for some reason, I decided to give it a chance with this fairly typical mid-afternoon escapade. Featuring at least two actors I'd heard of, this actually manages to break free from its humble origins before rapidly descending into exactly the sort of schtick I was expecting.

A young Keri Russell plays Michelle, your average buxom blonde college chick who acts as a babysitter for the children of successful businessman Bill Bartrand (Stephen Collins) and his wife Sally (Dawn Lambing). To everyone's surprise, Sally then appears to take her own life and struggling to cope, Bill finds himself relying on Michelle more than ever which draws both of them closer to each other. However, Detectives O'Keefe (Tobin Bell) and Jacobs (Phylicia Rashad) begin to suspect foul play and unfortunately for her, all leads appear to point to Michelle...

To start off with, "The Babysitter's Seduction" is a surprisingly competent thriller with an element of mystery to it. Performances aren't anything spectacular and to be honest, I can't say I expected any different. Russell's film career seems pretty limited to TV movies like this and the occasional blockbuster to pay the bills. Bell seemed ill-at-ease as the cop, presumably because he specialises in baddies (he is Jigsaw from "Saw", remember) but the biggest letdown is Collins. Cursed with one of those faces that you recognise but you can't remember where from, he never engages you as a viewer and barely registers a flicker of emotion, despite his wife's bloody corpse in his kitchen. But just when the film is actually offering a decent plot to follow then it all goes horribly wrong. The killer's identity becomes so obvious, even the Metropolitan Police would ask some questions. And once the question of who-dun-it is answered, the only reason you have left to watch is to admire Russell wearing short skirts and tight sweaters.

It's a shame that "The Babysitter's Seduction" can't maintain its strong start towards the end because I was starting to believe that we'd finally found a TV movie worth watching. Sadly, I was mistaken - it's tonnes better than most other TV movies out there and I'd definitely watch it over an episode of "The Waltons" but it simply doesn't feel like a quality product. The story feels borrowed from other movies of this type ("Poison Ivy" springs instantly to mind) and when the killer is finally unmasked, I was starting to lose interest. With perhaps something to sustain the momentum, this might have been a genuinely surprising effort but as it is, it probably isn't worth your while. Better change the channel, then...
