Sneak Peek of 'The Lion King 3D' Roars Into Select Theaters Before 'Cars 2'

24 June 2011 9:17 AM, PDT | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

Pop quiz: What do Matthew Broderick, James Earl Jones, Owen Wilson and Larry the Cable Guy have in common?

They're all part of the Disney family—as actors who have voiced key roles in animated summer flicks.

You'll remember Broderick (as Simba) and Jones (as Mufasa) from 1994's smash hit "The Lion King," a film that was nominated for a whopping four Oscars and took home two, including Best Original Score and Best Original Song.

Wilson and Larry the Cable Guy, meanwhile, come to us from the action-packed "Cars 2 3D," the highly anticipated sequel that follows star racecar Lightning McQueen and his pal Mater.

Now these two movies come together, because audiences will see the first four minutes of "The Lion King" in 3D (they didn't have that back in the '90s when it was made) in select theaters before "Cars 2 3D" begins.

James Reviews Nathan Greno and Byron Howard’s Tangled [Blu-Ray Review]

“You broke my smolder.”

When Disney announced they were making an animated film about the Brothers Grimm story Rapunzel

, I know I wasn’t one to be that excited about that idea. The story seemed very one note: A girl with long hair is locked up in a tower by an evil enchantress and it will take a prince to save her. Not much adventure and excitement when you mention that little synopsis.

But what the animation studio did instead was take the basic story of a girl named Rapunzel (Mandy Moore), taken from her parents who are king and queen of the kingdom by Gothel (Donna Murphy), who uses Rapunzel’s hair to keep from aging. When a rogue named Flynn (Zachary Levi) is on the run from the law after stealing the princess’ crown from the castle and stumbles upon the tower, he and Rapunzel are intertwined on »

Disney Promises 15 3-D Blu-ray Releases in 2011

3 January 2011 4:31 PM, PST | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

Personally, I could care less about 3-D movies let along 3-D television, but as this technology rolls out and we'll be hearing more about 3-D TV during this week's Consumer Electronics Show, expect more announcement such as the one below.

Burbank, Calif. — January 3, 2011 — Continuing its leadership in the advancement of 3D entertainment and marking the most significant title commitment to the growing Blu-ray 3Dtm market, The Walt Disney Studios today announced plans to release at least 15 of its films for in-home viewing on Blu- ray 3D in 2011.

Among the stellar list of films to debut on 3D include beloved and celebrated animated classics The Lion King and Beauty And The Beast, recent theatrical releases including the visually stunning high tech adventure Tron: Legacy and acclaimed box-office smash hit Tangled, plus many others to be announced that will release day-and-date and packaged with the Blu-ray 2Dtm version.

Disney Sees the Future In 3-D

3 January 2011 4:17 PM, PST | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

Last month, Disney gave audiences the chance to fall down the rabbit hole in 3-D from the comfort of their own homes with their “Alice in Wonderland” Blu-ray 3-D release.

Apparently they were happy with the results – the studio announced in a press release today that they are readying at least 15 of their films for in-home viewing on Blu- ray 3-D in 2011.

The obvious titles are the Mouse House’s recent theatrical 3-D releases “Tangled” and “Tron: Legacy.” But what’s most interesting here is the inclusion of some of their 2-D animated classics that are getting their very first 3-D upgrade.

By the end of this year, we’ll get to revisit the Pride Lands and join Simba as he reclaims his rightful place in The Circle of Life, as well as witness Belle discover Something There That Wasn’t There Before with her Beast – all in glorious 1080p »

Disney Unveils 3D Blu-ray Titles which includes Beauty And The Beast & The Lion King

3 January 2011 1:10 PM, PST | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

We've been hearing about Disney converting Beauty and the Beast into 3D for a couple years now. We've been expecting a theatrical release on Valentine’s Day 2010, that obviously never happened so it was pushed to sometime in 2011. Turns out the film is going to be released strait to 3D Blu-ray, instead of in theaters, which kind of sucks. I would have liked to see Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King in 3D, but it wont be on 3D Blu-ray because I don't buy into the whole 3D TV thing.

Here's the official Press release from Disney. Look it over and tell us what you think!

Disney to Finally Release ‘Beauty and the Beast’ and ‘Lion King’ in 3D… on Blu-Ray?

3 January 2011 12:30 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

It has been over two years since [1] Walt Disney Animation Studios announced that they would be converting Beauty and the Beast into 3D for a Valentine's Day 2010 theatrical rerelease. Disney has been showing a short test of the 3D footage at various industry events, including last year's ShoWest. Unlike the live-action 3D post conversions, I was actually quite impressed with what Disney was able to achieve with the added dimensionality (read my previous report here [2]). I actually havent talked to one person that didn't like the 3d scene they screened. As Valentine's Day 2010 quickly approached, Disney pushed the release back [3] to a To Be Announced 2011 date. And it was later revealed that they were so happy with how Beauty 3D turned out, that they were also in the process of converting The Lion King to 3D as well [4]. Good news: Today we have finally been told when we can see »

3 January 2011 7:10 AM, PST | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

Disney has kicked off CES 2011 with a bang by revealing an aggressive plan to release at least 15 films on Blu-ray 3D in the coming year.

New theatrical releases on Blu-ray 3D will include Tron: Legacy and Tangled (look for our full Tangled Blu-ray announcement on January 19). Both were released theatrically in December and are expected to be released on Blu-ray 3D in March or April. Additional day-and-date titles presumably including Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and others will be revealed throughout the year.

On the animated classics end you can expected Beauty and the Beast, which recently debuted on Blu-ray, as well as The Lion King, which will debut in high-def for the first time this year. Catalog films that will receive the Blu-ray 3D treatment this year include Bolt (available overseas right now), Chicken Little, Meet The Robinsons, G-Force, and Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas.
