‘Finding Dory’ Hits $1 Billion at the Box Office

9 October 2016 7:29 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Pixar’s “Finding Dory” has crossed $1 billion at the global box office to become the fifth highest-grossing animated film of all time.

The film is Pixar’s second billion-dollar grossing release, joining “Toy Story 3,” and the 12th Walt Disney release to hit that mark. It is also the fourth film by Disney to reach that milestone in the past 12 months, joining “Captain America: Civil War,” “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” and “Zootopia.” “The Jungle Book” fell just short, earning $966.2 million globally.

Finding Dory” is the year’s highest-grossing domestic release with $485 million. It earned an additional $517 million internationally. The sequel to 2003’s “Finding Nemo” brought back original cast members Ellen DeGeneres and Albert Brooks, and earned strong critical reviews. It follows Dory, a Pacific blue tang with short-term memory loss, as she tries to reunite with her family.

Hollywood is vexed by the lack of home runs at the box office this summer. But there is a bright spot amidst countless forecasts of trouble for the film industry. Beyond their reliance on pixelated performances, “Dory” and “Pets” share another similarity. They are both stories centered on animals that yammer about their personal lives, bicker and act like human beings. Against a questionable year of ticket sales, where even movie stars like Johnny Depp and George Clooney have come up short, audiences seem to prefer their personalities with tails.

These cuddly creatures are serving as an antidote to dark times in the world. Some executives in Hollywood are starting to »

Let HitFix fill you in. Dory (and her parents, who we get to see in Finding Dory) is a Pacific blue tang. The species’ scientific name is paracanthurus hepatus but also has a lot of other names: regal tang, royal blue tang, hippo tang, flag tail surgeonfish. There’s also an Atlantic blue tang out there, but Dory, as we know from Finding Nemo, originates from the Pacific Ocean, though we learn more about exactly where she grew up in Finding Dory.
