The 1980s enjoys a privileged, some might even argue inflated position in the sci-fi pantheon. In the US, it was the decade that gave us two thirds of the original Star Wars trilogy, Back to the Future, Ghostbusters, Terminator and Tron. In TV land, Star Trek got a brand new Generation, Quantums Leapt, Knights Rode, and of course, Alf.
But on the other side of the pond, British science fiction television was doing things the way we British always have – for less money, and a bit more bleak. But it wasn’t all creepy John Wyndham adaptations and hostile alien invasions, the 1980s also delivered a couple of British space comedy classics, along with the most underrated series in sci-fi history.

William O’Connell, whose extensive TV and film acting credits in the 1960s and ’70s included a memorably villainous role on Star Trek and a string of adversaries in the films of his frequent collaborator Clint Eastwood, died January 15 at his home in Sherman Oaks, CA. He was 94.
His death was announced to Deadline by a family friend. A cause was not disclosed.
O’Connell scored a lengthy roster of TV episodic credits in the 1960s, becoming a busy character actor of the day. He had small roles, often nameless characters distinguished only by their job titles — Flagman, Cabbie, Field Rep. #1 — in Highway Patrol, Peter Gunn and The Twilight Zone, also popping up on Dennis the Menace, My Three Sons, The Outer Limits, Bonanza, The Munsters, Batman and The Lucy Show.

Chita Rivera, the sultry singer, dancer and actress who commanded the Broadway stage for more than a half-century, has died. She was 91.
Rivera died peacefully in New York on Tuesday, following a brief illness, her daughter, Lisa Mordente, shared in a statement obtained by The Hollywood Reporter.
Known for her long, sleek legs, smoldering green eyes and lusty singing voice, the two-time Tony Award winner originated some of musical theater’s most iconic characters.
When West Side Story bowed in 1957, it was Rivera singing about life in America as the fiery Puerto Rican transplant Anita. As Rose Grant, the long-suffering girlfriend of songwriter Albert Peterson, Rivera received top billing over Dick Van Dyke in 1960’s Bye Bye Birdie. In 1975, she made the stage sizzle with “All That Jazz” as Velma Kelly in Chicago. And the 1993 musical adaptation of Kiss of the Spider Woman put her in the spotlight as the sexy Spider Woman.

Sometime in the 1970s, the controversial, acclaimed science-fiction writer and notorious curmudgeon Harlan Ellison was waiting for a date at a New York City restaurant. Realizing she was running late, he used a phone to try and call her for an update, but the noise of the dial tone and the bustling of a restaurant became a distraction, and he accidentally called his own landline number instead. The phone rang and rang until he realized he had called his own home, and was struck by the fear of how he would have reacted if he had answered the phone at home on the other end of the line. It is, of course, an impossible scenario, but one that became the idea for his short story "Shatterday," in which a man's life and sanity are utterly shattered after he comes in contact with a better version of himself.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, prolific screenwriter Tracy Tormé has passed away at the age of 64. Tormé was a veteran of 1980s-era "Saturday Night Live" and wrote the TV movie "UFO Cover-Up?: Live!" in 1988, cementing his reputation among amateur ufologists everywhere. In the late '80s, Tormé was hand-picked by show creator Gene Roddenberry to contribute to the then-new "Star Trek: The Next Generation." Tormé became the show's executive story editor and creative consultant, a position he held for 24 of the show's early episodes. He is also the credited writer on 12 first-season episodes, including "Haven," "Skin of Evil," "The Arsenal of Freedom," and "The Big Goodbye."
That last episode, which aired on January 11, 1988, was notable in that it was the first holodeck-forward episode of the series. The holodeck was, of course, introduced in the show's pilot, "Encounter at Farpoint," which explained to audiences that the Enterprise-d was equipped with...

The Twilight Zone is a classic TV show known for its scary and creative stories that explore mature themes and societal commentaries. It paved the way for other classic horror anthologies and has been revived multiple times, but none have matched the inventive nature of Rod Serling's original series. The best episodes teach valuable lessons while delivering spooky and suspenseful tales that have captivated viewers for decades.
The Twilight Zone is still considered one of the scariest and most creative TV shows of all time, and the best Twilight Zone episodes remain iconic decades later. It deals with mature themes and commentaries on society and blends them into well-crafted creepy and suspenseful stories that have terrified viewers from generation to generation. The best of the best has a lesson to teach its audience but hides it within a well-crafted spooky tale that is at turns terrifying, creepy, and often fantastical.

Tracy Tormé, the vision behind Sliders and an early writer on Star Trek: The Next Generation, has passed away at the age of 64 from complications from diabetes.
Tracy Tormé’s work and contributions within the sci-fi genre made him famous to fans. As per his sister (via The Hollywood Reporter), he “always interested in UFOs — the serious side of UFOs — and in the Air Force pilots who had seen them.” While he only wrote for two seasons on The Next Generation – also serving as story editor – his touch undoubtedly gave the series the thrust it needed to set the tone for the remainder of the series. The greatest success of his career, however, may be Sliders, which he co-created with Robert K. Weiss. Such a following it had developed, when Fox canceled it after three seasons, Sci Fi picked it up for its remaining two. In total, Sliders had 88 episodes...

When the 1962-1963 American television season kicked off, there was a notable absence on CBS' schedule: "The Twilight Zone" had been bumped from its Friday 10 Pm timeslot and replaced by a new sitcom titled "Fair Exchange." This was quite the blow to its devoted fans, who adored the series for its unusually heady treatment of the science fiction, horror, and suspense genres. Though that itch would get scratched by the debut of ABC's "The Outer Limits," viewers looked forward to embarking on mind-bending journeys once a week with the show's creator and frequent writer Rod Serling.
Fortunately, CBS had no plans to cancel "The Twilight Zone." The show just needed to find a new sponsor before it could once again haunt the airwaves. Once this issue got settled, CBS was keen to trumpet its January 1963 return in any way it could -- and it hit upon a brilliant bit of...

Intro: There’s one line that will forever go down in movie history as one of the most iconic moments of dialogue ever, and it was almost never to be. While filming the 1984 sci-fi / action / horror classic The Terminator, director James Cameron had initially written the line for Arnold Schwarzenegger as “I’ll come back”. However, as seen in the recent Netflix documentary series on the Austrian Oak, Arnie and Cameron had a heated clash over the line. Schwarzenegger hadn’t said the line correctly so Cameron suggested he just say the now iconic “I’ll be back” instead, leading Arnie to questioning the director’s writing, and getting a suitably pissed-off response in return.
This is just one example of how The Terminator not only became one of the most beloved movie franchises in Hollywood history, well, it is if you stop at part two that is, but that’s a story for later.

It's been nearly forty years, but people still remember "The A-Team." The action adventure series went on for five seasons, but stuck around in the public consciousness for much, much longer. People still remember the theme song, the cartoonish violence, the catchphrases. But although many viewers throughout the 2000s wanted a revival of the show, the TV series itself never came back.
Instead, we got a feature film in 2010 starring an updated A-Team, with the characters being veterans of the Iraq War instead of veterans of Vietnam. The film underperformed at the box office, however, and they never made a sequel. Unlike "21 Jump Street," a franchise where the later movies have now long-since overshadowed the TV show for most younger viewers, when people of all ages today think of "The A-Team," they're still almost certainly thinking of the show.
So what have the cast members been up to since...

Roger Ebert gave Young his props for his performance in the first “Rocky” film: “And Burt Young as (Adrian’s) brother — defeated and resentful, loyal and bitter, caring about people enough to hurt them just to draw attention to his grief.” The New York Times — in an absolutely scathing, completely dismissive review of the film — nevertheless said: “Burt Young is effective as Rocky’s best friend, a beer-guzzling mug.”

R.L. Stine published 62 little books in the Goosebumps franchise between 1992 and 1997, turning the classic horror and sci-fi of The Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits into a hit YA series, long before YA franchises dominated the libraries. It became the best-selling book series of all time in its day, at one point selling four million copies a month, and spawning a creepy little kids anthology show. 30 years later, the YA and horror landscapes have changed dramatically, but Goosebumps still has something to offer beyond deep nostalgia.
Case in point, the new Disney+ and Hulu reboot of Goosebumps, which takes the bold step of incorporating multiple stories from Stine's series and arranging them into a surprisingly coherent, clever little TV series. The show follows the aftermath of a Halloween party in a haunted house where a kid was burned alive decades prior. The party unleash the ghosts of the past,...

The Twilight Zone has inspired countless modern movies and TV episodes, and the Justice League cartoon was no different. One of The Twilight Zone's best-remembered stories involved a small village of people terrorized by an omnipotent boy, and this was featured in a Justice League episode. McCallum was the last remaining original cast member on CBS’ NCIS. He played Chief Medical Examiner Donald “Ducky” Mallard, an eccentric but highly efficient investigator with a knack for psychological profiling, for two decades.
Paulette — who played Abby Sciuto from 2003-2018 on NCIS — called McCallum a “legend” and posted a series of pictures of him on Instagram.
“Oh David. What a life. What a legend,” she wrote. “What a journey. And your legacy will always be the love you have for your family. Love to katherine and the kids and the grandkids, your absolutely very favorite things.”

The 1950s are considered the “Golden Age” of science fiction cinema, and that’s not just hyperbole. By many accounts, more than 200 sci-fi movies were released during that decade. And while the film industry had sporadically produced quality sci-fi in the years before—ranging from Aelita (1924) to Metropolis (1927), to The Invisible Man (1933)—it wasn’t until the 1950s that classic after classic began to arrive like riches from a long-lost hidden treasure.
And when we say classic, we mean films that essentially created the template for all science fiction movies that followed. Just look at this list. The first half of the decade brought us The Thing from Another World, When Worlds Collide, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Godzilla, and Them!, while the second half ushered in This Island Earth, Forbidden Planet, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Incredible Shrinking Man, The Blob, The Fly,...

The Terminator franchise has dominated the hearts of Sci-Fi fans worldwide due to lightning striking the cast, the idea, and the film industry at the right time. But that was over thirty years ago, in 1984, you know, back when Terminator was popular? And yes, despite the apocryphal tale of Gale Anne Hurd, who had worked at New World Pictures as Roger Corman's assistant, showing her interest in the Terminator franchise and James Cameron selling the rights for The Terminator series to Hurd for one dollar – fans wonder what's next?
With the promise that Hurd would produce more Terminator flicks only if Cameron would direct them – we all want to know when it's going to happen. Meanwhile, science fiction action fans are impatiently waiting for the most recent uber-bloody stunts featuring their favored robot from tomorrow. What's the plan? Is the entire series dead?

Philip K. Dick is a topic in and of himself. Setting aside the surreal life of this award-winning independent author, the sci-fi series Electric Dreams was released in 2017, which is established from his lesser-known works. The much-anticipated post-mortem series touching upon the 120+ short stories he released during his life was met with ecstatic devotee response and critical acclaim.
With such a great thing going for Dick's estate, what's the hold-up on a follow-up season? Philip K. Love, Death & Robots stands out as a popular and enjoyable animated anthology series, thanks to its diverse genres and unique stories. The Outer Limits, despite its age, is an extraordinary science fiction anthology that has influenced many anthologies and sci-fi series. Alfred Hitchcock Presents captivates audiences with its intelligent storytelling and famous director, offering gripping mysteries in each episode.
Although most television series follow a single story over the course of several seasons, there are some shows called anthologies that change up the plot from episode to episode or season to season, and these can be some of the most successful series to date. Anthologies may not be the most popular form of television, but they certainly stand out for their distinct format and ever-changing stories. In fact, some of the most popular and lauded television series from the past to now are anthology series.

Though the 1949 series Fireside Theater and others are often credited with being the first successful anthology series, the format began to gain popularity with shows like The Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits. These series feature separate standalone stories and characters that may be thematically connected and are typically based on the horror or sci-fi genres. Anthology shows are equally appealing to viewers who may not feel the need to commit to watching an entire series from beginning to end.

Fans of television -- particularly Star Trek -- are mourning the loss of writer and producer Manny Coto. Coto brought the joy and love of Star Trek back to Enterprise after three rocky years. His passing from pancreatic cancer sends shockwaves through the fandom. Whatever fans thought of Enterprise, it was clear that Coto was a lifelong Star Trek fan who poured that into his work on the series.
Most TV fans know Coto's name from the credits of series like 24 or Dexter, but for kids of a certain age, he's the immortal writer and director of the 1992 Larry Drake horror vehicle Dr. Giggles. He created two short-lived series called Odyssey 5 and neXt, and he had more recently written for Ryan Murphy's embattled American Horror Story franchise. Black Mirror has been entertaining people for six seasons with its strange mix of future technology, morality tales, and sheer weirdness. It is the spiritual successor to shows like The Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits but has been perfectly crafted for modern audiences.
Creator Charlie Brooker has given us a few scares, but this season, his second episode, Loch Henry, may be the scariest horror of the summer.
How Black Mirror Scared Us Before
There have been a number of frightening episodes of Black Mirror over the course of the last five seasons. White Bear was the first, showing us how a convicted murderer is meant to live out a horrible day only to be watched by tourists and have her brain wiped to do it all again.
Shut Up and Dance was another. In this, a young man is blackmailed after being taped touching himself to illegal videos.

Unfortunately, any progress the show was making has been put on hold during the writers strike – but earlier this year, Fuller assembled a writers room that spent six weeks brainstorming ideas and breaking down the scripts that will make up the first season of the series. Two of the writers in that room were author Tananarive Due, who has written multiple novels over the last thirty years and executive produced Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror, and her husband Steven Barnes, who is also an author and has also contributed scripts to shows like Stargate Sg-1, The Outer Limits, and the ’80s version of The Twilight Zone. “Star Trek” hasn’t been recognized by the Emmys for acting since the original series aired in the 1960s. Back then Leonard Nimoy earned three bids for his iconic role as Spock. Just days after the report that Amazon was working towards introducing an ad-supported tier of Prime Video, the company is reassuring users that it has no plans to shutter its free ad-supported streaming service Freevee. Just the opposite, as according to The Hollywood Reporter Freevee is adding a total of 33 free ad-supported TV (Fast) channels.

The best of the best has a lesson to teach its audience but hides it within a well-crafted spooky tale that is at turns terrifying, creepy, and often fantastical in nature.
