Rock Star: The True Story of the Vasquez Rocks

30 April 2013 11:38 AM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Well, Sound on Sight’s Locations Month is coming to a close. A lot of good articles about iconic locations have gone up. But there’s one left. The big one. One of the most iconic and enduring locations in both film and television.

That’s right kiddies, it’s time to talk about the Vasquez Rocks.

The rocks were formed roundabouts 25 million years ago by rapid erosion and the San Andreas Vault. That’s right, this one wasn’t cobbled together by no independent contractor or stage hand, oh no. This sucker was formed in the dawn of time by the hand of freakin’ God.

The rocks took their name from Tiburcio Vásquez, who was either a brave freedom fighter crusading against the oppressive white man or a thieving, murderous outlaw depending on who you ask. Vásquez was active around the 1870s and used the rocks as one of »

Michael Davis: Steven Barnes and Tananarive Due – Eulogy For The Sacrificial Negro

30 April 2013 10:00 AM, PDT | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

(Michael ran this piece on MichaelDavisWorld.com and asked that we run it here at ComicMix in place of his regular column. After reading it, you’ll know why!)

When is making a short zombie film an act of protest?

When the heroes and heroines are black. When there is no Sacrificial Negro to fulfill the fantasy that our lives matter less than white lives. When there is no cooning, shucking or jiving. When no black “Spiritual Guide” exists only to ennoble and enlighten white characters. When artists and backers unite to circumvent cultural barriers to tell our own stories.

As authors and screenwriters, we never set out to become filmmakers. But after years of options, pitches and meetings, we realized Hollywood is just a money machine following the ticket-buying habits of America as a whole. It will never lead. It was time to stop waiting for Hollywood to translate our stories to screen. »

Authors Tananarive Due & Steven Barnes Team Up For Horror Short 'Danger Word' (Fundraising)

25 April 2013 7:27 PM, PDT | ShadowAndAct | See recent ShadowAndAct news »

Last summer, I published a "speculative fiction" piece, specifically on author and screenwriter Steven Barnes (The Twilight ZoneThe Outer LimitsStargate Sg-1 and Andromeda) and his novel Zulu Heart, which is part of a longer series of riveting tales of slavery in an alternate America, to put it broadly. That was my intro to Steven Barnes' work, and, as I said at the time, I wish I'd discovered him much sooner. Barnes is married to author Tananarive Due (My Soul to Keep, The Living Blood) - a name I'm sure many of you are familiar with, and one that has come up twice or thrice on this blog, especially when »

Doctor Who thing: Doctor Who vs Doctor Who in Sci-Fi Madness

3 April 2013 2:23 AM, PDT | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

Think March Madness (that’s American basketball for the rest of the world), only with science fiction show pitted against one another. Organizer Chris DeFilippis of radio show DeFlip Side explains: First round brackets have been seeded—a boggling array of genre shows, from 1950s classics to current day favorites. Which is better, The Twilight Zone or The Outer Limits? The Greatest American Hero or Smallville? Speed Racer or Knight Rider?... For the first round, I’ve tried to pair shows that are thematically similar. For example, Star Trek: Deep Space 9 is pitted against Babylon 5. So some of the first round picks are going to be tough. But since bracket placement is completely random, we should wind up with some interesting competitions—and stunning eliminations—as the rounds progress. There will be six rounds in all, each lasting for five days, whittling the sweet 16 down to the elite »

Summer Premiere Dates Set for Sinbad and Primeval: New World

28 March 2013 1:00 PM, PDT | ScifiMafia | See recent ScifiMafia news »

It looks like our summer is shaping up very nicely, thanks to some excellent scheduling by The Powers That Be. At least our weekends will be taken care of. True Blood will almost certainly return in its usual Sunday at 9/8c slot, so there’s Sunday sorted. We told you earlier today that Zero Hour will be airing Saturdays at 8/7c, which fits in perfectly with this latest scheduling announcement: Primeval: New World will be airing Saturdays at 9/8c, followed by Sinbad at 10/9c on Syfy.

You may recall that we told you about the Syfy pickup of Primeval: New World back in October. You’ll recognize it as a spinoff from the original Primeval which aired here originally on BBC America. You’ll also recognize the star, Niall Matter, as Zane from the late great EurekaPrimeval: New World is another  series acquired by Syfy from our pals up in Canada, »

Game Of Thrones Author Will Develop New Series For HBO

9 February 2013 2:10 PM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

HBO has developed a very successful relationship with George R.R. Martin, the author of the best-selling epic fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire, that the network is currently adapting as the commercial hit television show Game of Thrones.

Martin has been involved with the screenplay and the production of the TV series from the start. In addition, the show has increased Martin’s fan base. With their current compatibility, it seems like both parties will be extending their relationship as George R.R. Martin is set to develop and produce a new show for HBO. He has also signed a two-year contract with the channel to be an executive producer.

Considering the fact that Martin’s expertise is in the science fiction and fantasy genre, there’s a high possibility that the new series will contain elements from that category, though the series’ content hasn’t been revealed yet. »
