PopWatch PSA: 'Better Off Ted' is new tonight

22 December 2009 1:10 PM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

We know it seems like this week's TV is a wasteland of repeats, holiday specials, and Hoarders/Intervention marathons -- but rejoice! Khandi Alexander guest-stars as Lem (Malcolm Barrett, right)'s intimidating mother on a new episode of ABC's Better Off Ted tonight at 9:30 Et. I'm hoping Khandi wears the enormous designer shades of CSI: Miami's Dr. Alexx (pictured) and speaks with the sass of NewsRadio's Catherine Duke. Before Bot,  Scrubs is new, too. This is just like yesterday, when I posted that The Nutcracker was on PBS, except at least five more people will care. That's »

Dave Foley Finds the Funny in AIDS, Abortion, and Glenn Beck

10 December 2009 8:59 PM, PST | Vanity Fair | See recent Vanity Fair news »

There isn’t much to recommend The Strip, a new indie movie that opened in select theaters last weekend. The comedy about minimum wage employees at a strip mall is practically begging for comparisons with the cult hit Office Space but actually comes across like a less funny Employee of the Month. The Strip would be guaranteed a spot in the dustbin of late-night cable if it wasn’t for a surprisingly touching performance by Dave Foley. Foley plays the middle-aged manager of Electri-City, an electronics store in a desolate, possibly Californian strip mall. His character is a caricature at best, but there are flashes of genius in Foley’s performance. When an Electri-City employee violently shakes one of Foley’s collectible snow globes, Foley becomes flustered by the unexpected chaos. “Why don’t we wait for this to settle,” he says, apparently needing the flakes to settle down before he can think clearly. »

You know his voice: Stephen Root to join ‘24′

28 September 2009 1:05 PM, PDT | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

You may not recognize his name but I bet you know his voice.

Stephen Root has joined Fox’s 24 for a multiepisode arc.

On the upcoming eighth season of the Fox real-time drama, Root will play Ben Prady, an officer of the Department of Corrections looking into a parolee gone missing.

Root has been a TV mainstay who has had leads in Newsradio and Pushing Daisies. He’s best known for his voice talents for King of the Hill, Tripping the Rift and American Dad.

His most recent work  involved a multiepisode run in True Blood and the upcoming George Clooney feature The Men Who Stare at Goats.

He has also appeared in No Country for Old Men and The Soloist.

Stephen Root to guest star on 24

24 September 2009 12:28 PM, PDT | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

Stephen Root has had an incredibly prolific career. He may not be a headliner, but you always remember him as something that has influenced pop culture (usually NewsRadio or the movie Office Space). Now he will be adding to his long acting resumé by appearing on the Fox series 24 as a parole officer.

The wonderful thing about Root is how he can play a multitude of characters. To use the previous examples, his character on Office Space, Milton Waddams, is nothing like his character on NewsRadio, Jimmy James. Neither of them are like his character from True Blood, Eddie. Well, you get the idea.

I'm also impressed with his ability to go from comedy to drama and back while mastering both types of performance. Yes, I'm a Stephen Root fan.

This is an incredible gain for 24. I may tune in just to see what sort of character he'll be playing in this one. »

Helen Hunt to Join 'Parenthood'?

14 September 2009 8:48 PM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

Helen Hunt

When news broke months ago that Parenthood, the new NBC drama remaking the 1980's movie by Ron Howard, would be moving to midseason I was very sad. Then to find out it was because Maura Tierney (ER, Newsradio), one of the shows start has breast cancer and they needed to postpone production, I was terribly sad. Then last week, Maura could not report back to work in time, so she was forced to depart the steller cast that is Parenthood. The cast includes Craig T. Nelson, Bonnie Bedalia, Peter Krause, and Dax Shepard.

Now the Hollywood Reporter is reporting that award winning actress Helen Hunt, who has gone back to feature films after doing seven years on NBC's Mad About You, is pondering the idea after producers asked her to join the cast. Helen is a terrific actreess that defiently brings another "name" actor to the show.

Maura Tierney leaves "Parenthood" for breast cancer treatment

11 September 2009 10:00 AM, PDT | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

Former ER star Maura Tierney has had to withdraw from her new series, Parenthood, to continue her treatment for breast cancer. NBC announced the actresses’ departure Thursday, and said they would recast her role in the new TV series based on the 1989 film.

In July, production on the series has been postponed for eight weeks and the premiere pushed to mid-season to allow Maura to undergo what they were then calling “medical evaluation.” Later it was confirmed she had a tumor in her breast that would require surgery. A representative for Maura said her prognosis is positive:

Ms. Tierney and her doctors remain confident that the outcome of her treatments will be positive. She is deeply disappointed that she will not be able to rejoin such a highly respected, talented, fun and funny group of actors and wishes to thank Jason Katims and NBC for their patience and support. Tierney was cast as Sarah, »

Please Get Well Soon, Maura Tierney!

10 July 2009 3:05 PM, PDT | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

Ugh. Bad news... According to the Hollywood Reporter, Maura Tierney needs an "eight-week medical evaluation" of some kind. (NBC: "We are unable to release further details and ask that you respect her privacy at this time.") This means that Maura's upcoming NBC drama, Parenthood, produced by Ron Howard and Jason Katims and costarring Peter Krause and Mae Whitman, will be pushed to midseason. Mercy, the Michelle Trachtenberg series about nurses, will premiere in Parenthood's place. But the schedule switching is obviously not the point. Maura Tierney is a visibly awesome woman whom we have loved since NewsRadio and all the way through ER, and whatever she's going through right now »

Andy Dick Talk Show Makes the Most of ‘House Arrest’

11 March 2009 1:04 PM, PDT | Tilzy.tv | See recent Tilzy.TV news »

Does anybody know what to make of Andy Dick? I mean, is he for real? The guy pops up everywhere (sometimes with this son?!?) and whenever I see him I laugh, but I can’t tell if it’s with him or at at him. If anything, dude’s probably laughing at me because, unless he invested with Madoff, he’s loaded, has his choice of assistants to help out with the day-to-day, and had the privilege of working with the late, great Phil Hartman on NewsRadio. Sure, I can leave my living room without first alerting the authorities, but Dick is even making the most of his house arrest with a talk show filmed from somewhere inside the parameters of his Scram ankle bracelet’s safety zone. House Arrest with Andy Dick is simple, brilliant (sort of, I guess) and just as big a disaster-in-waiting as you’d expect. »
