Storyline

In this quasi-mythological costume series, Hercules (in Greek Herakles), the noble bastard son of Zeus, hence hated to death by his step-mother Hera, doesn't live as an Olympian after accomplishing his Works and the Argonauts' journey, as classical myth has it, but relinquishes immortality and continues to fight both human and supernatural evil on earth, as a wanderer in and beyond Greece, usually accompanied by his human side-kick Iolaus and sometimes by dodgy Salmoneus. Countless are the challenges, either especially set up by Hera or just on his way, but he always triumphs against all odds, delivers otherwise often hopeless mortals and moves on to new adventures. Trivia

Kevin Smith who played Ares could have been Hercules. In Robert Weisbrot's book, 'Hercules The Legendary Journeys - An Insider's Guide to the Continuing Adventures,' Hercules producer Eric Gruendemann stated: "Before Kevin was cast(as Ares), we actually tried to get him in as a possible person to play Hercules for the (original TV movies), but we weren't able to make it work in terms of timing because he had other commitments. But he is such a huge talent, and I was always thinking. "I'm gonna get him back in these shows in some way." See more »

Goofs

Most characters are referred to by their Greek names such as Zeus, Hera, and Ares. However, Hercules is the Roman name of the Greek figure Heracles. The series is set in Greece and the two names would never have been used interchangeably. Though this is a common mistake with modern interpretations of the character. See more »

Fun Show
3 January 2007 | by (Montana, U.S.A.) – See all my reviews

I think that this show is great. I mean, the special effects are really nothing compared to what is being seen now, but we do see some of the earlier work of WETA, who went on to kick major butt in LOTR and KK. The acting was really good, these, to me, were compacted epic movies for free on t.v. The acting was good and it was always fun to see stunt men fly through the air and Hercules beating them down.

All I really have to say is, that the movies were great and the direction the show took was wonderful. Though sadly, slighted by it's cancellation at the end of 8 episodes in the 6th and final season. The show did lack some of the deeper elements found in "Xena: Warrior Princess", but I think it made a good contrast. All in all, watch the movies first, if you like them, watch the show and decide if you like it or not. To each their own and have fun, the show and the movies can be a great laugh.
