Justin Long has been on a horror hot streak thanks to Barbarian and House of Darkness, and he’ll continue playing around in the genre with a role in the new “Goosebumps” series.
Long will be a series regular, playing “Nathan Bratt, the new schoolteacher who develops a terrifying connection to a decades-old supernatural murder.”
After two movies, the brand new live-action “Goosebumps” TV series based on R.L. Stine’s bestselling books will bring the tales back to the small screen, we recently learned.
It sounds like the series will have a similar storyline to 2015’s hit movie, which adapted many of Stine’s iconic books in one fell swoop. Here’s the project’s plot synopsis…

Don’t underestimate the second weekend of Paramount’s horror movie Smile. The Parker Finn directed and written title, which has provided many in town that horror remains a bankable genre for the big screen after a 22.6M opening, has a shot of possibly upsetting Sony’s family movie Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile and 20th Century Studios/New Regency/Disney’s upscale David O. Russell comedy Amsterdam for No. 1 with around an 11M+ take.

Smile had a very good Monday grossing 2.2M for a running 4-day total of 24.8M. By comparison, Blumhouse/Universal’s Black Phone rang up 3M in its first Monday back in June, so pretty good.
Sony is betting that Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile based on the classic kids 1965 Bernard Waber book comes in between 11M-12M at 4,300 locations. Rivals are forecasting much higher (15M-18M) as...

Plot: Three friends, thinking they’ve outgrown trick or treating, decide to spend the night locked inside a Halloween store. But their night of spook-filled fun soon turns to outlandish survival.
Review: Given the success of the recent Goosebumps films, it’s no surprise that we got a Spirit Halloween movie. Actually…yeah, it kind of is surprising because Goosebumps was based on a popular books series while Spirit Halloween is just a Halloween store that isn’t even open all year. Not only that, but they make the decision to set it in a Spirit Halloween itself, featuring a ton of the costumes and props that are on sale at the actual store. Oh, commercialism, you bastard.
As you probably suspected, this is a kid’s movie. So don’t go into this expecting some kind of circumvention of the genre. The production isn’t quite as “Straight to...

Given that The Quarry is the latest horror game from the brilliant minds behind the modern genre classic Until Dawn, it should come as no surprise that the game’s cast is filled with horror character tropes voiced (and often motion-captured) by a lot of familiar names.
Indeed, part of the fun of playing a game like The Quarry comes from trying to figure out where you know so many of its cast members from. While a few names will jump out at you instantly, others most certainly fall into that “Oh yeah, I know them” category.
So if you’re tired of scratching your head over who is who in The Quarry, here’s a breakdown of the game’s cast of primary characters and where you might know their actors from.
Abigail Blyg – Voiced by Ariel Winter
Abigail is a shy and occasionally awkward camp counselor who seemingly aspires to be an artist.

Sung Kang ditches the fast and furious lifestyle for his directorial debut Shaky Shivers — a delightful gateway horror treat that recalls the Goosebumps television show or Are You Afraid of the Dark. Its Young Adult vibes bring two girls face to face with werewolf curses, zombification, and friendly ice cream parlor wholesomeness. Some might see the "gateway" description and wince, but that's not meant as a zinger — Shaky Shivers is filled with giggles and quirky horror introductions that make the genre accessible to all audiences. There's something Nickelodeon After Midnight about it all, as Kang turns a low-budget buddy comedy with teeth into a sweet tale about friendship, brainfreeze, and choosing our destinies over giving up to lesser fates.
Brooke Markham stars as Luci, who we meet handcuffed to a steering wheel in best friend Karen's (VyVy Nguyen) vehicle. Why? Because Luci fears she's been cursed by a woodland vagabond...

In true Jack Black fashion, the veteran comedic actor somersaulted his way onstage in a panda suit — seemingly in a tribute to his iconic “Kung Fu Panda” character Po — to accept the MTV Movie & TV Awards’ Comedic Genius Award.
“I don’t deserve this but I will take it,” Black said. “Thank you, MTV. This is for all the ‘School of Rock-ers’ out there, and for all the ‘Tenacious D-sciples’ and, most of all, my amazing wife Tanya [Haden] and our two incredible boys, I love you.”
The “Nacho Libre” star began his short and sweet speech joking about all of the films he’s been in: “Are you kidding? For what? ‘School of Rock,’ ‘Jumanji,’ ‘Kung Fu Panda,’ ‘Goosebumps,’ ‘Nacho Libre,’ ‘Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny,’ my sweet dance moves on TikTok? What are we talking about? It’s ridiculous!” he said, which prompted huge cheers from the audience.

Save for a small handful of recent films like “The House with the Clock in Its Walls” or the “Goosebumps” movies — nearly all with Jack Black as comic relief — chillers for children are an uncommon and somewhat dicey proposition. For horror filmmakers even interested in trying, they have to hit an exceedingly narrow target, offering enough scares and intensity to delight intrepid tweens without sending them diving under their parents’ comforters with nightmares. Based on J.A. White’s novel, “Nightbooks” will certainly push its audience to the limit with its unrelenting fusillade of jump scares, black magic and campfire stories, but

While George A. Romero is world renowned as the grandfather of zombie horror, what is not as well known is that he was often asked to help adapt some popular franchises to the big screen. While it may be hard to comprehend, the reason that this is not common knowledge is that many of the projects never progressed beyond an initial script or treatment.
One such project was the first Resident Evil movie, which had a script written by Romero that was tossed out in favor of the Paul W.S. Anderson version we were given. Yes, that's right - the master of zombie horror wrote a script based on the greatest zombie video game and someone decided not to bother going with it. What has emerged recently is news that Romero also adapted R.L. Stine's Goosebumps when the book series was in its prime.

There is surely no better candidate to re-launch Marvel’s resident horror creature Man-Thing than R.L. Stine. If you’ve ever read or seen his Goosebumps series, you’ll know Stine has a unique brand of pulp horror mixed with knowing humour. Now, he brings that strong authorial voice to this new five-part mini-series. However, while fans of the writer will love it, some of Stine’s creative decisions might turn off longtime Marvelites.
In Man-Thing #1, the tragic creature formally known as Dr. Ted Sallis has regained his intelligence and ability to speak and has made the unlikely choice to come to Hollywood to try his hand at being a monster movie star. It’s a significant move away from the traditional depiction of the characters as a dumb – in the literal sense – beast who hides away from society in his swamp.

We're one step closer to seeing Shadyside on the big screen, as 20th Century Fox and Chernin Entertainment have hired a writer to pen their film based on Fear Street, the popular book series that R.L. Stine created before Goosebumps.
The Tracking Board reports that Kyle Killen has been hired to write the screenplay for the Fear Street film. The movie is expected to be an adaptation of the book series, although Stine himself recently revealed on Twitter that "the Fear Street movie will be an original story" and to "watch for it next year." He also mentioned that "there may be more than one Fear Street movie."
Killen has worked steadily as a writer since the early 2010s, working on the TV series Lone Star, Awake, and Mind Games, as well as writing the screenplays for the Jodie Foster-directed The Beaver, the thriller Scenic Route, and the upcoming Sinbad.

A couple months ago it was announced that Goosebumps author R.L. Stine would be writing a Man-Thing comic book series for Marvel. That seemed to get fans excited about Man-Thing, and today we have a preview for you to check out along with a collection of cover art from various artists. But first, here's the synopsis:
Attempting to recreate the formula that produced Captain America, biochemist Ted Sallis was transformed into the shambling creature known only as Man-thing! Now, having recently regained his ability to speak, Man-Thing sets out on a journey to leave the swamp once and for all. But when an ancient and mysterious danger threatens reality, he will have to choose between his new life and the place he once called home!
Stine is working with artists German Peralta and Daniel Warren Johnson along with Tyler Crook, who does the cover art. Man-Thing #1 is set to hit shelves on March 8th.

Odds are that either you or some of your friends in middle school were addicted to horror stories penned by acclaimed writer R.L. Stine, namely from series such as Fear Street and Goosebumps. In the time since being originally published, the latter made the jump to comic books, so it’s highly appropriate that Stine take the next step by assuming the reins on Man-Thing.
Originating during a time when the lines between superhero and monster comics were becoming evermore blurred, the tragic Man-Thing has since gone on to become a cult favorite among True Believers and has even appeared in various animated series as well as an all but forgotten film released in 2005.

Less than one month after its January 26th, 2018 release date was announced, Sony Pictures has moved its Goosebumps sequel to a September 2018 slot on the calendar.
Deadline reports (and Box Office Mojo confirms) that Goosebumps 2 is now set to come out in theaters on September 21st, 2018. The new release date is within reaching distance of the Halloween season and is likely a more fitting slot for the adaptation of R.L. Stine's popular book series (the first Goosebumps movie came out on October 16th of 2015).
While plot details are unknown at this time, Rob Letterman and Darren Lemke, the director and writer of the first film, respectively, are returning for the follow-up film, along with producers Deborah Forte and Neal H. Moritz.
Jack Black has not officially been announced to reprise his role as horror author R.L. Stine, but he is expected to once again star in the sequel.

Back in October of 2015, horror fans who have a soft spot for Shadyside received an early Halloween treat when it was reported that a Fear Street movie was in the works at 20th Century Fox and Chernin Entertainment. Since that autumn, the news front on the project has been relatively quiet, but R.L. Stine himself recently broke that silence during a Twitter Q&A.
On the evening of February 7th, Stine answered questions from fans on his Twitter page, and when he was asked about the Fear Street movie, he tweeted this response:
“The Fear Street movie is in production. Yaaay. Now we are waiting for a good script. Watch for it next year, I think.”
When another fan inquired about which Fear Street novel the film will be based on, Stine revealed some interesting (and surprising) news:

Back in December, Dreamworks Animation gave fans their first look at the long-awaited animated adaptation Captain Underpants, which is getting set to hit theaters on June 2. While it still remains to be seen when the first trailer may arrive, the studio has unveiled the first poster, offering another look at this hero and his own version of Batman's "Bat-signal." Instead of the iconic Bat logo, though, this signal features the title characters' trademark tighty whitey underpants.
This poster, which debuted on Nerdist today, also reveals the movie's full title, Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie. It isn't clear if the "First Epic Movie" is signalling that this is the first in a series of movies, or that it's merely the first movie to be based on the popular book series written by Dav Pilkey, which has spanned 12 books. This movie will also help celebrate the 20th anniversary of first book's debut.

Lionsgate is looking to play another gruesome game on the big screen with a new Saw movie, and now the first two cast members have joined the ranks of the eighth film in the franchise of bone-crunching snares, flesh-ripping traps, and malevolent mind games.
Variety reports that Laura Vandervoort and Hannah Anderson have joined the cast of Saw: Legacy.
Scheduled for an October 27th, 2017 release, Saw: Legacy is directed by Michael and Peter Spierig (Predestination, Daybreakers, Undead) from a screenplay by Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger. The story is based on the original Saw world created by James Wan and Leigh Whannell, which kicked off with a 2003 short film that was soon followed by a feature version that made a big impact on the modern horror scene.
The franchise’s producers Mark Burg, Gregg Hoffman, and Oren Koules are all returning to back Saw: Legacy.

Chalk it up to the low expectations going into the film’s release, or simply the lack of marketing from Sony’s end, but Rob Letterman’s Goosebumps proved to be one of the sleeper hits of 2015. Critics and audiences alike took to the family-friendly scarefest, which conjured up a healthy $150 million box office cume off the back of a $58m budget. A sequel was quickly green lit back in April but since then, all has been quiet on the R.L. Stine front. That is, until now.
Exhibitor Relations claims the tentatively titled Goosebumps 2 has been earmarked for release on January 26, 2018. No other information was divulged, but we know from previous reports that Sony has locked down the core creative team of Rob Letterman, screenwriter Darren Lemke, and producers Deborah Forte and Neal H. If R.L. Stine's Goosebumps books hold a special place in your heart (and on your reading shelf), then you know that there are seemingly countless stories to be told from within the spines of the spooky tales. It may be hard for many to believe, but even after writing hundreds of books over the course of several decades, R.L. Stine has never written a comic book. Until now, that is. Fear Street and Goosebumps author R.L. Stine is stepping outside of Shadyside and into the swamp to bring fear to the pages of Marvel Comics in a new Man-Thing comic book series.
Initially mentioned this past Halloween as a secretive project for Marvel, The New York Times and EW reported today that Stine's Man-Thing comic book series will consist of five issues and feature artwork by German Peralta and other talented artists.
According to Marvel (via EW), the new Man-Thing series will follow the titular monster as he goes up against “an ancient and mysterious danger” while outside the familiar confines of his swamp.
Regarding the tone of the series, Stine told The New York Times what readers can expect from his take on the creature that was created by Stan Lee, Roy Thomas, Gerry Conway, and Gray Morrow back in 1971:

Legendary's live-action Pokemon movie is quickly moving forward, with Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Alex Hirsch (Gravity Falls) signing on to write the script back in August. Today we have word that the studio has found its director, with Rob Letterman (Goosebumps) coming aboard to take the helm. This project is said to be the first in a planned franchise, entitled Detective Pikachu, with the story centering on this title character.
The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Legendary has put this project on the fast track with production being eyed to start in early 2017. The studio acquired the film and TV rights to the Pokemon franchise back in July, although there were reports that surfaced soon thereafter that a live-action movie may not come together too quickly. Happy 25th anniversary, Are You Afraid of the Dark?.
The beloved Nickelodeon show was billed for kids, but honestly, it gave us more nightmares than Goosebumps ever could, starting with its very appropriately timed premiere on Halloween 1991.
Despite its constant flow of scary tales, it's tough to find a '90s kid who doesn't hold a special place in their heart for this fright fest, because, let's face it, we all wanted to be members of the Midnight Society.
Watch: 'Home Improvement' Turns 25 -- See the Cast Then and Now!
We can still hear the freezing kid ghost slowly uttering, "I'm. Cold." That creepy twisted claw from the show's premiere is forever etched into our brains. We still don't understand why some buildings even have a 13th floor. And, yes, we still secretly wish we were in that haunted mall, that haunted pinball arcade, that haunted dollhouse... Ok, all of the...

Way back in 2009, we reported that Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit director Peter Jackson was developing an adaptation of the beloved Mortal Engines novel, and now it's finally coming to fruition. Peter Jackson is teaming up with Universal Pictures and Media Rights Capital to produce this movie with his Lord of the Rings and Hobbit collaborators Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, although Peter Jackson will not take the helm. Instead, Christian Rivers, who has worked as a visual effects supervisor for Peter Jackson's Weta Digital, will make his feature directorial debut. Here's what Peter Jackson had to say in a statement.
"Christian is one of my closest collaborators. The combination of emotion and jaw-dropping visuals in Mortal Engines makes this the perfect movie for his move into feature directing. What Christian intends to do with Philip Reeve's terrific story is going to result in an original and spectacular movie.

At a loss for what to watch this week? From new DVDs and Blu-rays, to what's streaming on Netflix, we've got you covered.
New on DVD and Blu-ray
"The Martian"
Unfortunately, the poster on this one was misleading -- they never actually let us bring Matt Damon home after seeing the movie. (His wife would probably disapprove.) You can, however, take home Ridley Scott's acclaimed Mars mission movie "The Martian" on DVD and Blu-ray starting January 12. The Blu-ray editions include more than 90 minutes of special features, including five "in-world" pieces, and featurettes from the cast, director, and producers. There's also a gag reel, which should be fun.
"Hotel Transylvania 2"
Drac's Pack is back in the sequel to "Hotel Transylvania," as they put the son of Mavis and Johnny through a "monster-in-training" boot camp to bring out his vampire side. The DVD, out January 12, includes feature commentary with the director and vocal cast,...
