Despite critical praise and strong ratings, CBS abruptly canceled the show at the end of its fourth season. In her autobiography, Cybill Shepherd attributes this to increasing backstage tensions between the cast and crew, as well as the network's displeasure with the show's feminist leanings.
According to several different people, including Chuck Lorre and Alan Ball, Cybill Shepherd was jealous of the attention and awards Christine Baranski got for her work.
According to Alan Ball, Cybill Shepherd refused story lines where her character looked especially bad.
Sally Kellerman auditioned for the role of Mary Ann.
