Incorrectly regarded as goofs

Jack's car appears to have a Michigan license plate, but it's really an old-fashioned California plate.

Audio/visual unsynchronised

Several times throughout the film characters say things when their lips do not move. For example, when Jack is under the bus defusing the bomb, a piece of rubber runs up under his cart. Jack says, "Fuck me!" but his lips do not move.

As Jack is driving his truck up the freeway on ramp, the camera switches to a side on view. Jack sounds his horn several times, but both of his hands remain on the steering wheel. In previous/subsequent shots, when Jack sounds the horn, his hands leave the wheel and press the horn ring inside the steering wheel.

When Payne says to Jack, "Ok, but I want you back *real fast*," what he is actually saying is, "I want you back in 10 minutes." The scene was dubbed to give Jack a little more leeway - he is obviously gone longer than the allotted 10 minutes.

After Jack tried to defuse the bomb under the bus, he punctured the fuel tank. When he told Annie what had happened, the fuel gauge is shown and the needle quickly advanced toward empty. For how much fuel was lost during a very short cut away from the fuel gauge and back to it, it would have emptied out within no more than two minutes. Yet several long minutes went by between the last shot of the fuel gauge and when the bus finally ran out of gas. Possible explanation: The bus might be fairly fuel-efficient, so if there was enough gas in the fuel lines and other fuel system components, it could allow the bus to remain running for a good while even after the tank was empty. Also, if the punctured hole wasn't at the very bottom (lowest point) of the tank (the sending unit might be in a fairly deep "well" at the very bottom of the tank to allow every bit of gas in the tank to be pumped out), then a little gas could still be left even after the gas above the hole had all leaked out.

Payne picks 46 because, as we see, it's the top floor and Jack will have to get off the roof or be crushed. But a little later, we see from a label on the elevator monitor board that the other police are watching that this elevator's top floor is 52. Possible explanation: to save on multiple tooling costs at the factory, sometimes different elevators may use a "standard" manufactured panel or other part that allows for more possibilities and/or other features that a less "deluxe" elevator model made by the same company might not have. So it's possible that this elevator was smaller (fewer floors) than another elevator that the manufacturer makes, but they just used the bigger panel for this one.

While the news crew is preparing the tape to distract Payne and rescue the passengers, Jack and Annie check the fuel gage and it clearly reads empty. There is no way that a vehicle without gas can still be running. The bus would stop almost instantly and blow up. But, when Jack and Annie are rigging the bus to drive by itself, you can see the fuel gage and it clearly reads full. Where did the fuel come from as the passengers are being transferred to the rescue bus? Possible explanation: The bus might be fairly fuel-efficient, so if there was enough gas in the fuel lines and other fuel system components, it could allow the bus to remain running for a good while even after the tank was empty. Also, if the punctured hole wasn't at the very bottom (lowest point) of the tank (the sending unit might be in a fairly deep "well" at the very bottom of the tank to allow every bit of gas in the tank to be pumped out), then a little gas could still be left even after the gas above the hole had all leaked out.

In the next shot, where we see the camera moving closer and closer to the plane from the bus's perspective, the runway the plane was just being towed on is gone, as is the plane it was going past a moment ago along with the people. There was no time between shots for the plane to have been moved so far away.

At the beginning of the movie we see Keanu Reeves taking Jeff Daniels "out of the equation" by shooting him in the leg. We realize it's a serious injury as he requires the use of a cane when receiving his medal. However later on in the movie when they move in on Dennis Hopper's home, which takes place the next day, Daniels is part of the assault team and has no cane, no limp and is obviously very mobile.

In the first part of the movie, it appears that the building is approximately 53 floors high, we can see this as when Keanu Reeves and Jeff Daniels go to the roof the label on the door is "ROOF/53". However, the service elevator seems to reach the top of the shaft after Dennis Hopper enters level 46 on the control panel. This is rather unfortunate, especially as the security console says that the elevator "serves floors GE-52". I wouldn't like to be in the elevator as it tries to go past level 46 to a higher floor such as 52.

When Dennis Hopper's shooting the shotgun through the lift roof, the number of holes doesn't match the number of blasts. He shoots once and a hole appears. We then see a close up of him and he shoots twice more, but when we cut to the ceiling after the third shot overall, there are only two holes in it. Doesn't seem likely he'd miss the roof at a range of 2 feet.

Right before Jack gives chase to the bus with the bomb on it, Howard Payne gives the bus's location as being Ocean Park and Main. Later, the bus drives down the 105 freeway and ends up at Los Angeles International Airport. Ocean Park and Main Street is northwest of the airport, and in fact only a couple blocks from the beach and approximately one mile from the Santa Monica Pier. Interstate 105 is an east-west highway that starts just south of LAX at it's west end and goes east to Interstate 605 and passing roughly 7 miles or so south of downtown Los Angeles. Being already northwest of LAX, the bus would have had to go far east first and then south to get on Interstate 105 to take it to the airport. Interstate 405 would have been the nearest and easiest highway to take to LAX from Downtown Santa Monica.

No airport has a dedicated "emergency runway." Also, runways are designated by compass headings, such as 19 right or 31 left, and would not be known as the "Brave Tango" runway.

All trains have a "dead man's switch", which activates if the driver no longer has pressure on it. This is a safety device which stops the train if a driver is incapacitated for any reason. Therefore, when the driver in the film is shot in the back, the train would simply coast to a stop.

City buses have approximately 70% of their total weight in the rear due to the extra suspension, wheels and the engine. This is made evident when the bus first jumps the gap in the freeway, as the rear of the bus dipped down while the front of the bus pointed up. Therefore, it would be impossible for the bus to have jumped a fifty foot gap in the freeway that was level on both sides and landed as shown.

Incorrectly regarded as goofs

After the first bus blows up, Jack is on the phone with the bomber. The bomber gives Jack a deadline of 11am, after which Jack looks at his watch. The time on Jack's watch shows 8:05, but that's not the time of day. Above the numbers on the watch are the letters AL, which means it's on the Alarm setting. 8:05 is the time the watch alarm was set for, not the time of day.
Payne hears a news reporter on television saying a police officer boarded the bus by jumping onto it from a moving vehicle and assumes it must have been Jack. It is later revealed that Payne has a video camera inside the bus and can see everyone aboard. So he should have seen Jack through the video camera and already known he was aboard the bus. Payne's "assumption" was likely a ruse as he didn't want Jack to know about the camera.

Plot holes

When Payne first tells Jack about the bomb on bus 2525, Jack is speaking on one of a bank of pay phones. Payne mentioned that the bus is still in Venice (and, therefore, not yet above 50mph). Why didn't Jack just move to another phone and call the police department to have them direct the bus driver to stop the bus at that point, before the bomb was armed?

SPOILER:After the bus explodes Jack assumes that Payne doesn't know about it because of the tape running on the high jacked signal to his hideout. The bus is rear wheel driven. Speedometer is connected to front tires. So when bus takes off into air on freeway, the front wheel should stop spinning in few seconds and bus should have been blown off. The bomb is definitely not judging wind speed. The take off itself of course is another error mentioned already.

If Jack can speed the train up, why does he not try to slow it down? Even if it can't be stopped completely, using the speed lever to reduce it to the minimum possible would be a sensible course of action. There is nothing to suggest he wouldn't be able to do this as he is able to increase the speed without any trouble. If there was something to show that slowing down the train would be unworkable it would make sense, but seems to more serve as a plot device.

Jack steps off the moving bus at the airport via the rear doors, since there are no front door steps, and they stay open afterwards until Stephens steps into the opening. However, a tire that bursts on the *right* side of a vehicle at high speed will cause that vehicle to skid to the *right*, which in this case is *into* the retrieval vehicle - not away from it. (Of course, it's possible the bus's wild skid to the left is the result of Annie, who is an inexperienced driver, overcompensating - but we don't see even a hint of the fishtail that would produce.)

When Payne "loses his head" on top of the subway train, the light doesn't get damaged. Possible explanation: perhaps the idea is that the light was a very sturdy solid unit, since it could actually knock someone's head off.

When Payne shoots the subway train driver, the glass to the drivers cab doesn't shatter and the bullet holes are too high in comparison to the driver's wounds.

Jack is shown attempting to disarm the bomb from under the bus, having a good two feet of clearance in which to work. Yet, we can clearly see before Jack slides underneath on the wheeled platform that there is nowhere near such room actually available under the bus. Moreover, given this low clearance, it would have been impossible for Jack and Annie to have been able to safely leave the bus this way from the center access panel.
