The Two Sandras

I didn't imagine this year for Sandra Bullock. Hollywood isn't often kind to its romcom superstars once they near 40. Meg Ryan got the boot at 39 once Proof of Life and the Russell Crowe affair scandal hit. Global love for Julia Roberts cooled at around 37 as soon as she did, speaking figuratively, in Closer. By standard pop-culture/Hollywood timetables everyone will be pretending they never loved Amy Adams, Drew Barrymore and Reese Witherspoon between the years of 2012 and 2015. This is all both a real shame and expected for careers built on warmth and *new romance* appeal in an industry that privileges youth over talent and in a country that's youth-obsessed. Aging is tough enough in real life. Imagine how tough it is for celebrities who are asked to constantly embody our romantic dreams and beauty ideals? But things are getting better for actresses in the grand scheme of things. I mean,

Sony Weekly Update (Dec. 17-23)

Another Thursday, another update to the Sony PlayStation Store, and another Game Rant Weekly Update.
Guitar Hero: Van Halen finds its way to PS3 retail shelves this week – jumping into the already over-saturated, and uninspired, band-specific Guitar Hero market. Unless you are a fan of the band, or were one of the savvy gamers who will be receiving this title free – as part of the a mid-Fall Guitar Hero 5 promotion – there’s nothing new in Guitar Hero: Van Halen to get excited about. Pixel Junk Shooter is potentially on track to become one of the fastest selling Psn titles to date. It’s a great game, I’m just saying, in case you want to save yourself about $50 dollars and download it instead of revisiting another uninspired Guitar Hero band game.
Most of the attention this week is on the release of the Gran Turismo 5: Time Trial Challenge Demo

Sandra Bullock in 'The Blind Side,' getting serious

A few months ago, as All About Steve came and went having revealed more about Steve than audiences could bear, I wrote in this blog about the disservice Sandra Bullock was doing herself, clinging to outmoded girly roles when her talent (and the sunny goodwill she has earned with audiences) could support more serious and more mature characters.
Am I a genius or what? Okay, maybe not. But the great response our Sandy (we can call her that, can't we, because she's a star who feels very much one of the people) is getting for her more serious, more mature

Carl Rinsch Circling 47 Ronin

The latest samurai project to hit Hollywood, 47 Ronin, finally has a director in Carl Rinsch. We first heard about this film last year and that Keanu Reeves was attached. Rinsch, who shoots commercials for Rsa, has been on Hollywood’s radar for awhile. Rsa owners Ridley and Tony Scott has even previously had discussions with Rinsch to direct the prequel to Aliens, until Ridley Scott decided to return to the franchise he launched.
The film is based on famous fact-based story of a band of samurai swordsmen who avenge the death of their master in 18th century Japan. The script is being written by Chris Morgan who is even going to address Keanu Reeves’ half Asian, half American nationality.
In 47 Ronin, Reeves will play one of the swordsmen; the group and their master are revered in Japan for their revenge attack on Dec. 14, 1702. The film will tell a stylized version of the story,

Besson, Reno, Portman, Oldman: 'The Professional' 15 Years Later

Jean Reno and Natalie Portman in The Professional
Photo: Columbia Pictures
Is Luc Besson an overrated filmmaker? I think he's a fine director but reviewing his resume he's usually a pretty average writer and his movies are kind of hit-or-miss. But every once in while he sneaks in an effort that surprises you, makes you take a step back and think, Whoa, where'd that come from? My most recent such reaction came while watching his last directorial effort, Angel-a, a sweet and moving love story dropped into a hotzone trifecta of mediocrity including The Fifth Element, The Messenger and Arthur and the Invisibles. To that point, outside of Angel-a he hasn't made a substantial contribution to the medium since Leon - The Professional, a contribution certainly worth celebrating, and will be done so over the next ten paragraphs.
I didn't see The Professional in the movie theater. I watched it on VHS.

Jones and Gyllenhaal Crack Source Code

Duncan Jones, son-of-Bowie and director of this year's finest sci-fi Moon, has signed on to direct Source Code: a near-future thriller about a soldier mysteriously waking up in somebody else's body on a commuter train, with a bomb about to go off. That intriguing premise has enticed Jake Gyllenhaal, who's currently in talks to star.Jones' next project was supposed to be the Blade Runnerish Mute, but difficulties raising the $25m he needs to get it going seem to have put that project on hold for the time being, so a shot at a solid studio genre film would seem like a canny move.Source Code, to be honest doesn't have the greatest pedigree: the original script was by Ben Ripley, whose CV to date includes little other than two Dtv Species sequels. But the currently-hot Billy Ray, who wrestled six hours of the BBC's State of Play into

The 'Speed' actress - who is married to motocross enthusiast Jesse James - admits she has always put herself first and doesn't worry what anyone else thinks, even if they correctly advise her that her actions are wrong. Dennis Hopper Diagnosed With Prostate Cancer

This is some very upsetting news.
It appears that actor Dennis Hopper has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. Earlier this month, there were some reports that Hopper had been rushed to the hospital for an undisclosed reason. Now, according to the BBC, Hopper is entering a special program for treatment in California. The initial stay in the hospital was reportedly due to flu-like symptoms and dehydration.
Hopper has had a long and varied history in cinema, ranging back to his friendship in his youth with actor James Dean. He went from playing bit parts to writing, directing, and starring in Easy Rider, which many regard as one of the formative films of 1960s and 1970s cinema. Since then, he has played many memorable roles in over 200 productions, ranging from villains in Speed and Waterworld to a psychotic photographer in Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now and as Frank Booth in Blue Velvet.

The revelation that Hollywood legend Dennis Hopper has prostate cancer is a hard pill to swallow. A man of magnanimous presence on screen, and star of films such Easy Rider, Mad Dog Morgan, Apocalypse Now, Blue Velvet and Speed, he has undoubtedly made his name as a tough guy not to be messed with. However, he must now focus all his strength and attention on recovery, which, as a result, puts his artistic endeavours on the backburner.
First on the list is the cancellation of Hopper's imminent plans to arrive in Melbourne. The subject of an exclusive Australian exhibition due to open Thursday 12 November at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (Acmi), Hopper had arranged to fly in next week to oversee the installation, and take part in the official opening program.

Bullock Involved In Husband's Messy Custody Battle

Sandra Bullock is embroiled in a custody battle between her husband and his porn star ex.
The Speed actress is standing by her celebrity mechanic husband Jesse James as he fights his second wife Janine Lindemulder's attempts to regain custody of their five-year-old daughter, Sunny.
James has had sole guardianship of the child since Lindemulder, a former adult film star, was jailed for tax evasion. She served six months behind bars and was recently released.
But James is determined not to let his ex gain custody of their daughter, because he fears his little girl would be introduced to a dangerous world if she lived with her mother.
In a statement to the court, James says, "Good cause exists for the court to conduct a review to determine if (Sunny) will be safe with (Lindemulder). She should be restrained from allowing the child around pornographers, drug addicts, guns and firearms, felons and other unsafe environments."
Bullock, who has no biological children, recently admitted she relishes her role as stepmum to James' three kids.
She explained, "I may never hear that word 'mom'. But being a parent is not about breeding. It's about caring.
"When you don't have that title, you flounder and it hurts. But this is the best test of being a parent. And I just have to keep reminding myself I don't care what I get. I care what I give."

Reeves' Battle With Canadian Woman Continues

Keanu Reeves' battle with a woman alleging he's the father of her kids is set to drag on - she is contesting the results of a paternity test.
DNA tests have conclusively disproved Karen Sala's claims that the Speed star is the biological dad of at least one of her kids - but the 46 year old is relaunching her bid for financial support, according to Reeves' lawyer.
The actor's attorney Lorne Wolfson tells Eonline.com, "Ms. Sala is challenging the validity of the DNA testing, so the case goes on."
Wolfson is adamant, however, that Reeves will not have to take another test: "If (Sala) wants to challenge it, let her go right ahead. But we are confident that the DNA testing was done properly and that the results are sound."
Reeves maintains he doesn't even know Sala, who asked for $150,000 (£100,000)-per-month in child support, retroactive from 1988, and $3 million (£2 million)-a-month in spousal support, effective from 2006.

Erik Buckman: Romantic comedies, like nearly every film in the horror genre, have a small playing field and a list of guidelines in which to play from. Here’s a list of some of those guidelines:
1. You must have an “airport scene.” You know, where the guy sprints to the airport to declare his love before it’s too late? If you can’t have an airport scene, you must have some kind of a chase with the guy (it’s always a dude) chasing the gal on foot while she is in a fast-moving 40-ton vehicle.
2. The story must focus on a guy who must either be a hardcore philanderer that is afraid of real love/commitment, or on a nasty woman who fills the large void where her personal life should be, with her career. The two are interchangeable…but not usually.
3. The kiss that changes everything.

FX has ordered 13 episodes of each series, with Terriers tentatively slated to premiere next summer and Lights Out in late 2010.

It centers on "Hank Dolworth" (Logue), an ex-cop who partners with his best friend "Britt Pollack" (Raymond-James) to launch an unlicensed private investigation business. The duo, both struggling with maturity issues, solve crimes while avoiding danger and responsibility. Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow, The Shield) directed the pilot episode. Terriers is produced by Fox 21.

Back in March, director Jan de Bont (Speed, Twister) was getting ready to shoot the "Point Break" sequel in Indonesia and Australia. Then Bont was replaced by Jeff Wadlow and the project seemingly came to a screeching halt. Moviehole tried to get in touch with several of its studio contacts to find out if there has been any movement on "Point Break Indo," but didn't get many responses. Then a bit later in the day, the site heard back from two trusted sources, both stating that the project is currently dead. The sequel may one day happen, but at this stage, all attached cast members (Damien Walshe-Howling, Rick Otto) have been freed up to work on other projects.

When you consider the action sequels you’d have strangled at birth if only you were blessed with the chance – Beverley Hills Cop 3, Speed 2, anything with Michael Bay’s name on it – the news that Point Break 2 has been aborted should cause movie fans everywhere to aimlessly fire their gun into the air with relief.
The original 1991 Kathryn Bigelow actioner which dared to push Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze into the same frame has been the subject of much sequel speculation. Tentatively titled Point Break: Indo (as in Indonesia), the surfer sequel would have seen the FBI investigating a series of, er, pirating incidents from a gang calling themselves “The Bush Administration”. That’s satire kids.
Initially news that original Break scribe, the back to front named W. Peter Iliff would be handling the screenplay caused some excitement in the movie surfer community, excitement which soon evaporated upon

Sandra Bullock may yet be one of our great living movie stars, capable of stealing just about any scene from any other actor. If only she could just find her place. Her role as the woman who winds up driving the bus in Speed was the breakout performance of a lifetime. In one scene, the bus approaches a lady crossing the street pushing a baby carriage. There's nothing anyone can do, so Sandra just screams and covers her eyes. The baby carriage goes flying, and -- not a baby -- but empty cans go flying and rattling all over, with the angry woman shaking her fist at the departing bus. Keanu Reeves tries to calm Sandra down by explaining that it was just cans. Her hysteria lasts a few more seconds, but it's so over-the-top utterly charming that Keanu can't help but smile at her. I've always suspected that that

Keanu Reeves has agreed to take a DNA test after a woman claimed he's the father of her four grown-up children.
Karen Sala, who is seeking millions in spousal and child support from the Speed star, filed suit against Reeves in May, seeking a paternity test to prove he fathered her offspring, who are all now in their mid-20s.
The Matrix actor denied he'd had a relationship with the 46 year old, and was seeking a court dismissal over the claims.
But he has now finally given in to her demands to officially verify whether he is the father by undergoing a DNA test during the next few weeks, according to TMZ.com.
