Storyline

Simon is a sales representative about fifty. When Mickey, his cop friend, is being shot, he leaves everything to find the murderers. Two years before, Marx, an old gambler, met Frederic, a young man that does not look very smart and started to follow him everywhere (as a puppy) and changed his name to Johnny to please Marx. Of course, Simon's story is related with Marx and Johnny's one. But the thriller is only a pretext for a psychological description of the three main characters. Written by Yepok

Jean Yanne and Jean-Louis Trintignant fall
11 January 2016 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

"Regarde les hommes tomber" (1994) aka "See How They Fall" is a neo-noir. One should not expect of it a conventional ending. Characters tend to live out their fateful destinies in neo-noir stories, and destinies are not always kind or what they anticipated.

The narrative of this story has two more or less co-equal story lines that eventually intersect, as one will guess while watching the movie. We are introduced first to Jean Yanne's character, Simon. He is a salesman who feels old in his job and marriage. When he helps out a detective friend who gets shot and goes into a deep coma, he becomes engaged in finding the shooter who also killed someone. We are then taken back in time before these events and introduced to two other characters. There is an older thug named Marx (Jean-Louis Trintignant) and a young drifter named Johnny (Mathieu Kassovitz).

Yanne continues his investigation while abandoning his job and wife. That takes him areas far afield from his life as a salesman. We follow the developing relationship of Marx and Johnny, which also takes unexpected turns. Then we see what happens when the lives of all three reach a common point in time and intersect. The climactic events are bound to be quite surprising.

One of the unexpected elements in this story is adult-onset homosexuality and/or male love for male. There are no graphic scenes of such, but these relationships gradually encroach on the developing story to the point where we wonder if that's what the story is mainly about. That's only one strain or part of it though. The principal man who falls is Simon, and a change in his sexual orientation is but part of how his character alters. Trintignant alters too. In his case, love plays a greater part.

The acting is good but maybe the script is less good, because I for one was not fully convinced that these characters would do all of the things they did. Dramatic license allows considerable leeway, and this is not all that far from that murky line.
