A clip of Bela Lugosi in White Zombie (1932) is included to show the face of the father of the vampire family, Count Dracula. In other scenes not showing his face, Peter Fonda plays the Count, as well his main role as Van Helsing.

Peter Fonda was cast at the suggestion of Eric Stoltz who, due to other commitments, was unable to take a part in the film. At the time, Stoltz was Bridget Fonda's boyfriend, Bridget of course being Peter Fonda's daughter.

Since movie shares one character, morgue receptionist portrayed by David Lynch with deleted scenes of Lost Highway (1997), it is possible that they're set in the same fictional universe, which was confirmed by Lynch to be the one of TV series Twin Peaks (1990).
