Welcome back, bats--- crazy Gary Oldman

30 December 2009 7:55 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

For many movie fans under a certain age, Gary Oldman is best known as Harry Potter's godfather and Batman's trusted copper. Which is an absolute joke to people who grew up watching Oldman wring every last drop of crazy out of a collection of deranged movie villains. The Professional, The Fifth Element, True Romance, Air Force One, Lost in Space, Murder in the First. I could go on. He was Hollywood's go-to madman when Dennis Hopper was busy. So I got a tingle when I saw the trailer for The Book of Eli (releases Jan. 15), in which Denzel Washington finds »

Discuss: Is the R-Rated Hit-Girl 'Kick-Ass' Trailer a Little Disturbing?

22 December 2009 7:32 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

If you're still not sold on the subversive superhero movie Kick-Ass, even after hearing the "bananas" buzz out of this year's Butt-Numb-a-Thon, maybe a new trailer spotlighting the character Hit-Girl will entice you. You just might not want to admit that you got excited for a movie based on a spot focusing on a little girl who says the f-word and the c-word nonchalantly and shoots bad guys in the cheek and chops off their legs with even less of a thought.

Really, who is this trailer for? People who thought Natalie Portman wasn't young enough, foul-mouthed enough or violent enough in Leon (The Professional)? Guys who went to see Kill Bill Vol. 1 for the meteor hammer-wielding schoolgirl? Nostalgic audiences who will be too busy enjoying the Banana Splits theme song to realize what they're watching?

Okay, so it's all over-the-top enough to get the simple defense, "dude it's just a comic book movie. »

First Trailer For Luc Besson's Adventures

22 December 2009 12:02 AM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Luc Besson has made some interesting choices since directing Leon: The Professional, and while they haven.t always been good choices, they.re always, well, let.s just stick with interesting. His next film, an adaptation of the Franco-Belgian comic series Les Aventures extraordinaires d'Adèle Blanc-Sec, looks like a cauldron of odd and a whole lot of fun. For those unfamiliar with the comic like myself, it apparently follows a novelist turned investigative journalist named Adèle Blanc-Sec who finds out that deep in the crime world is a universe of mystical beings and happenings. The first trailer has been released for the flick and although little is shown, it.s definitely something to get excited about. The film looks like it.ll offer, if nothing else, a beautiful palette of colors and great special effects. Check out the trailer below and tell us what you think: »

Teaser Trailer and Behind-the-Scenes Footage For Luc Besson’s Adele Blanc-Sec

21 December 2009 4:50 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Right near the top of my 2010 most-anticipated list is Luc Besson's Adele Blanc-Sec, a film I previously described as a "little bit Indiana Jones, a little bit Tintin and a little bit Hellboy". Our first look at the film came via a teaser poster, then there were some gorgeous stills unveiled and now there's a wonderful trailer. You can see it embedded below the break. This is the first teaser for what looks like Besson's most lavish production since The Fifth Element, and for my money his most exciting prospect since Leon/The Professional. If you follow the URL at the end of the trailer to the movie's official site, you'll get a click through to a news report from the French TF1 station. There's a goodly amount of behind the scenes footage within, even showing the shooting of some of the stuff you see in the trailer, and »

'Brothers' Wrenching, But the Performances Are Top Notch

5 December 2009 9:05 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Sibling rivalry is a common theme in films, but Brothers takes that universal subject and places it in a new context. There's more at play — and at stake — in Jim Sheridan's awards hopeful than just family interaction. Grief, guilt, and identity lie at the torn heart of this sometimes disturbing but always moving film.

At the beginning of Brothers, the family of Captain Sam Cahill (Tobey Maguire, Spider-Man 3) is reluctant to see the Marine return to Afghanistan for another tour of duty. His wife, Grace (Natalie Portman, The Other Boleyn Girl), jokingly asks to come with him, and his daughters (Bailee Madison and Taylor Geare) plead with him to stay. He has an uneasy relationship with his brother, Tommy (Jake Gyllenhaal, Zodiac), who has just been released from prison in time for Sam to leave. Trouble-making Tommy has always stood in his brother's shadow, and it's never been »

King of cool

Jacques Audiard's new prison thriller is the most stylish film to come out of Europe for years, following up on the promise of his previous movies Read My Lips and The Beat that My Heart Skipped and confirming his place among the greats of French cinema. Jason Solomons talks to a director who wants his audience to fly with him

Jacques Audiard wears a hat. It's a trilby that, the 57-year-old director says, keeps him warm in the winter and cool in the summer. He was wearing it in the heat of Cannes last May when I first met him, on a blazing roof terrace; and he's wearing it again today, in London, on an autumnal Monday when I catch him smoking his pipe outside the hotel where we're due to meet.

With horn-rimmed glasses, smart jacket and a cravat, he looks a bit like an English gentleman, a »

Total Recall: Natalie Portman's Best Movies

1 December 2009 2:30 AM, PST | Rotten Tomatoes | See recent Rotten Tomatoes news »

Child actors are notorious for fizzling out once their prepubescent charms disappear during adolescence, or once they discover the various vices of the adult world, and it seems to be the rare case when a young starlet can overcome these hurdles and transition successfully into a career of grownup roles. Natalie Portman is one such success story: after making her debut as a 12-year-old in Luc Besson's Leon The Professional, Portman gradually took on more adult roles until she was playing everything from a young, widowed mother (Cold Mountain) to an emotionally manipulative stripper (Closer). This week, she stars alongside »

First Stills From Luc Besson's Adele Blanc-sec!

30 November 2009 9:50 AM, PST | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

That France's Luc Besson was able to keep his upcoming big budget adaptation of the popular Adele Blanc-Sec Victorian-era comic series quiet as long as he did is nothing short of remarkable.  This is a big director making a big film based on a big property and somehow he kept it out of the public eye until photography was complete but with an April theatrical release around the corner the PR machine is gearing up.  Here's the full synopsis once again:

The year is 1912. Adèle Blanc-Sec, an intrepid young reporter, will go to any lengths to achieve her aims, including sailing to Egypt to tackle mummies of all shapes and sizes.

Meanwhile, in Paris, it's panic stations! A 136 million-year old pterodactyl egg on a shelf in the natural history museum has mysteriously hatched, and the bird subjects the city to a reign of terror from the skies. But nothing fazes Adèle Blanc-Sec, »

Comparing 'Twilight' And 'Bram Stoker's Dracula' With MTV's Gore Girls

20 November 2009 9:00 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Welcome to Gore Girls! MTV contributor Terri Schwartz doesn't know crap about the horror genre, and she's volunteered to be our Movies Blog guinea pig. She has a good guide too. Fellow contributor Jenni Miller is a bonafide horror enthusiast, and she's willing to walk Terri through her formative experiences with blood, guts, monsters and maniacs. Together, this dynamic duo are The Gore Girls!!! Good luck Terri... you're definitely going to need it.

Today brings another special Friday edition of MTV's Gore Girls. With "New Moon" freshly arrived in theaters, we decided to try something a little bit different. Instead of Jenni and Terri discussing a single movie, they watched "Bram Stoker's Dracula" -- a romance-focused vampire story, albeit with quite a bit more horror than Stephenie Meyer's works -- and discussed it in relation to "Twilight." For those who haven't seen it, "Dracula" is a pretty straightforward adaptation of Bram Stoker's 1897 book. »

Shelf Life: The Professional

19 November 2009 7:33 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

This week, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment released Leon: The Professional on Blu-ray, and because I have the best job in the world, I got to watch it for this column. The truth is that this was a formative movie for me, not only augmenting my budding cinephilia in terms of attention to and interest in strongly visual filmmakers, but in understanding the technical and artistic value of widescreen cinema. Before the film was released on widescreen VHS and later, DVD, I watched the pan-and-scan version when it was first released on video and almost got sick from the cropping and scanning of director Luc Besson's balletic camerawork.

Thankfully, I never have to watch it via that sort of butchered presentation again, and even if you don't think the movie is a masterpiece, at the very least, Sphe's new Blu-ray offers a gorgeously rich transfer that fully celebrates Besson's cinematography. »

Besson, Reno, Portman, Oldman: 'The Professional' 15 Years Later

Jean Reno and Natalie Portman in The Professional

Photo: Columbia Pictures Is Luc Besson an overrated filmmaker? I think he's a fine director but reviewing his resume he's usually a pretty average writer and his movies are kind of hit-or-miss. But every once in while he sneaks in an effort that surprises you, makes you take a step back and think, Whoa, where'd that come from? My most recent such reaction came while watching his last directorial effort, Angel-a, a sweet and moving love story dropped into a hotzone trifecta of mediocrity including The Fifth Element, The Messenger and Arthur and the Invisibles. To that point, outside of Angel-a he hasn't made a substantial contribution to the medium since Leon - The Professional, a contribution certainly worth celebrating, and will be done so over the next ten paragraphs.

I didn't see The Professional in the movie theater. I watched it on VHS. »
