Michel Hafner (2 December 2000):
This new special DVD edition of Legends of the Fall (1994) by Columbia/Tristar is of good quality.
The film master used has its share of speckles and other little blemishes, but nothing distracting. Image steadiness is good.
Color and contrast rendition are good as well. Images are most of the time sharp. The noise and grain level is uneven. Some shots are noticeably grainy (landscapes, skies), others less so.
Video artifacts are present in the form of some ringing around contours, now and then slight noise filtering artifacts and some over-enhanced edges. All of this is minor and not yet distracting.
Compression is good with an average bit rate close to 6 Mbit/s, but differences to the older version are small. For all other aspects the new version is identical as far as I could see, except for all the new supplements, of course, and a markedly higher audio bit rate.
This is a solid average Columbia/Tristar DVD with most of the time film-like images that will please on any kind of display.

Compression is efficient but some artifacts are occasionally visible due to the low average bit rate resulting from squeezing 134 minutes on a single layer. The new special edition is dual layer and better in this regard, but otherwise pretty much identical.
This is a solid average Columbia/Tristar DVD with most of the time film-like images that will please on any kind of display.
