Vampires bring $7 bil to Hollywood economy

24 August 2010 11:00 PM, PDT | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

Hollywood has repeatedly peddled the apocalyptic threat from aliens, machines, comets, viruses and zombies, but who was watching the vampires?

Never exactly absent from the entertainment scene, those eternal bloodsuckers lately have infiltrated everything from big screens and little screens to bookstore shelves, clothing racks, download services, video games and video, record and jewelry stores.

Just this week, the Fox/New Regency "Twilight" parody "Vampires Suck" grossed $20 million, and 5 million regular viewers are rabidly following HBO's newest hit, "True Blood," as it swoops toward its season 3 finale Sept. 12. Meanwhile, Justin Cronin's "The Passage," Stephenie Meyer's "Breaking Dawn" and Charlaine Harris' "Dead and Gone" hover on best-seller lists.

These charming, deadly immortals are everywhere. And as a result, they're spilling as much green as red -- about $7 billion since the "Twilight" film franchise bowed less than two years ago, according to THR estimates.

Neil Jordan Adapting & Directing ‘Skippy Dies’

Director Neil Jordan (Interview with the Vampire, The Brave One) is to adapt Irish author Paul Murray‘s novel Skippy Dies, taking on writing duties as well as helming the film himself, reports Variety.

The novel, released early this year, is about the titular character Skippy (so named because of his resemblance of the kangaroo), a fourteen-year-old boy who is going through the trials of boarding school in Dublin. As the title suggests, the book is also about his death and takes in the before-and-after of his demise, focusing on various characters along the way. The story is said to be both comic and touching, with tender and dark moments, and has received wide critical acclaim since it’s release.

Jordan currently has two films already scheduled including an adaptation of Neil Gaiman‘s novel The Graveyard Book and is currently filming the TV series The Borgias so where this »

Anne Rice: "I quit being a Christian"

Anne Rice has announced her decision to "quit" Christianity. The Interview with the Vampire author revealed a departure from atheism and return to the Catholic church in 1998 and reportedly pledged only to write for the "glory of God", but has now renounced her membership of the Christian faith. In a post on her Facebook page, Rice said: "For those who care, and I understand if you don't - Today I quit being a Christian. I'm out. I remain committed to Christ as always but not to being 'Christian' or to being part of Christianity. "It's simply impossible for me to 'belong' to this quarrelsome, hostile, disputatious, and deservedly infamous group. For ten... years, I've tried. I've failed. I'm an outsider. Anne Rice ‘quits’ Christianity, citing bigotry and hatred

29 July 2010 10:02 PM, PDT | Hollywoodnews.com | See recent Hollywoodnews.com news »

HollywoodNews.com: Anne Rice, author of Interview with the Vampire, is widely regarded as the original queen of vampire fiction, but more recently, she’s better known as a Christian writer and outspokenly devout Catholic, having made a public (and controversial) re-conversion to Christianity several years ago. This week, however, Rice announced on her official Facebook page that she is once again leaving the church.

“I quit being a Christian,” she writes. “I’m out. In the name of Christ, I refuse to be anti-gay. I refuse to be anti-feminist. I refuse to be anti-artificial birth control. I refuse to be anti-Democrat. I refuse to be anti-secular humanism. I refuse to be anti-science. I refuse to be anti-life. The Gates Review: "Repercussions"

26 July 2010 7:46 AM, PDT | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

Last night on The Gates, Nick had to cope with learning that vampires do exist! For someone who seems to be very straight edge and "normal" - Nick really didn't have the type of reaction that I expected from him! I seemed to be yearning for him to lose his mind or at the very least get a little spooked.

I think that is the biggest problem with Vampire shows/movies these days. There's no reaction upon hearing that the undead do exist. Whatever happened to the scared/shocked reactions like Christian Slater a la Interview with the Vampire? Now, when he realized that Brad Pitt was a vampire - he kinda bugged out for a second. That's the type of reaction I was looking for!

In any case, Nick not only handled this absurd new quite well, but he showed us a darker side to his gleaming good cop persona. »

Brad Pitt Beats RPattz In Sexy Vampire Poll. Really?

12 July 2010 12:30 PM, PDT | VH1.com | See recent VH1.com news »

In a recent poll, Brad Pitt beat Robert Pattinson by a one percent margin to win the title of Hottest Hollywood Vampire. We’re confused. Pitt’s portrayal of Louis, sired by Tom Cruise’s vampire Lestat in Interview With The Vampire is, in our opinion, pretty hilarious (although Edward Cullen climbing trees and running through the forest at top speed is unsexy in it’s own way, But Still, that’s easily overlooked with rosy lips like his). We  think Pattinson should have won this one hand’s down because Pitt is just so 90’s in that film (to say nothing of RPattz’s broody hotness in the Twilight films). Some of the other contenders were Kiefer Sutherland in The Lost Boys, Gary Oldman in Dracula and Wesley Snipes in Blade. Are the results of this poll skewed, or do you vamp loyalists out there agree that Brad’s »

Mark Kermode picks film and TV's most enduring bloodsuckers

Max Schreck, Nosferatu (1922)

An unacknowledged adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula (which was banned in Britain after copyright complaints from the author's litigious widow), Fw Murnau's silent gem still startles and amazes; the sight of the vampire's shadowy hand grasping at the heart of his victim ranks among cinema's most enduring images. So convincing was Max Schreck's unearthly performance that the modern movie Shadow of the Vampire would playfully suggest that he was the real deal; a genuine vampire hiding his identity in plain sight beneath the cover of movie magic.

Federico Luppi, Cronos (1993)

Debunking that most enduring vampire cliche, Guillermo del Toro's chilling masterpiece manages utterly to desexualise its antihero's bloodlust with extraordinary results. Having availed himself of the weirdly mechanical "Cronos" device, Federico Luppi's Jesus Gris staves off death with the occasional snifter of spilled claret. A »

Pitt scored 44 per cent of the 1,000-plus votes, just one per cent more than Pattinson, who plays Edward Cullen in the Twilight franchise.

Anne Rice on New Lestat Movie and More

It has been almost a year since Robert Downey Jr became rumored to play vampire Lestat Du Lioncort in a reboot of Anne Rice's "The Vampire Chronicles." Now, the author has posted a few comments on her Facebook account with an update. "Yes, there are definitely talks going on about a new Lestat film," she said. "But it's too early for me to say for certain what will happen. Right now? We have hopes, dreams, interest, talks. That's it." Rice added that she has no control over what gets made and said that it was because of producer David Geffen that "Interview with the Vampire" ever made it to the big screen. She's waiting for another big producer to step in and develop one of her properties. "I have excellent agents. We are in talks on several properties," said Rice. Martin UK DVD Review

26 June 2010 4:19 AM, PDT | Screen Anarchy | See recent Screen Anarchy news »

A teenage vampire movie? Snooze... But hang on, this is a George A Romero flick from the 70s! Shot between The Crazies in '73 and Dawn of the Dead in '78, Martin was made before the director became known almost exclusively for his zombies and shows the director at perhaps his most restrained. Reassessing the vampire in a modern context, like so many since, it dispenses with many of the classical legends, and focuses on vampirism as an affliction or illness; a destructive manifestation of teenage angst and sexual awakening.

A shy and awkward teenager, Martin believes he is in fact an 84 year old vampire condemned to drink human blood for survival. Lacking fangs of any sort, Martin carefully stalks his victims, before drugging them and slicing open their veins with a razor. He moves to small town Pennsylvania to live with his ageing cousin Cuda, who maintains that Martin »

Ghent film fest to honor Jacques Tati

17 June 2010 3:00 PM, PDT | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

The Ghent International Film Festival will honor the late French director, actor and comedian Jacques Tati with an exhibition called "In Double Quick Time."

Produced by the Cinematheque Francaise in collaboration with Les Films de Mon Oncle, the exhibition is a collaboration between the fest and the East Flanders Cultural Center. The exhibit will run through Jan. 16.

Tati's body of work from 1949-74 includes numerous classics, beginning with "Jour de Fete." His pointed, off-kilter criticism of modernism was evident in all of his films including "Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot" (1953), "Mon Oncle" (1958), and "Trafic" (1971). The Monsieur Hulot character in "Trafic" was the perfect personification of the Tati touch.

A 310-page catalog will be produced for the exhibition.

The fest also celebrates the 10th anniversary of the World Soundtrack Awards, which will feature 11 top film composers performing with the Belgian Philharmonic Orchestra: Oscar winners Howard Shore (the "Lord of the Rings »
