Sexual harassment leads to several tragedies
23 October 2015 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

"Improper Conduct" (1994) is a neo-noir that builds its story around sexual harassment in the workplace. In this case, the boss (John Laughlin) harasses employee (Tahnee Welch). Laughlin's father-in-law is Stuart Whitman who provides cover for a certain amount of Laughlin's sexual straying but has his limits. Laughlin loves his pregnant wife (Kathy Shower) intermittently, but he's capable of extreme violence. Steven Bauer plays Welch's lawyer, but the court proves an ineffective remedy when witnesses are absent. The only possible witness (Everett Lamar) is driven off the road, hospitalized, and cannot testify. Welch's sister (Lee Anne Beaman) takes over the second half of the story, attempting to work revenge upon Laughlin for the untimely demise of her distraught sister in an auto accident.

The first half of the story is drama; the second half is more of a thriller. Because of some sex scenes, this film is also classed as an erotic thriller. The erotic aspect doesn't predominate.

It's clear that this is a below-par movie. The characters are on the one-dimensional side. A catty co-worker is very catty. A gay office assistant is very gay. A vindictive wife is very vindictive, and so on down the line. The story (penned by Jag Mundhra) is over-plotted and not easy to accept if one thinks about it. On the other hand, it's clear that director Jag Mundhra has dressed up his shots somewhat. He's tried to write an interesting story and succeeded to some extent even if it seems to be overly mechanically arranged to give the outcomes he's aiming for. Mundhra extracts decent performances for the most part from a decent cast.

Critics and reviewers by and large pan this movie, sometimes for unjustified reasons, like not enough erotic content or too much saxophone in the score or the 90s fashions. It's true that Bauer has a lackluster role. While too much like a comic book story, the story is just enough beyond amateurish to keep us engaged. I'd rate the movie 4.5, but I've rounded it up to 5 in this case because I think it's getting too bad a rap.
