This, the very first of the TV movies that led to the wonderful but now
sadly
departed action/adventure series is far from the best but it does include
the first appearance of Herc's companion in arms Iolaus played by the
brilliant Michael Hurst who with Kevin Sorbo created the greatest twosome
in
genre television history.Anthony Quinn who was presumably cast to add
gravitas to the project is overshadowed by these two men whose partnership
takes off from the get go.Also cast is Xena in waiting Lucy Lawless as one
of the more aggressive of the Amazons and she gives just enough to the
role
to hint at the glories to come when she headed her own show. The action
quotient here is less than you would get in the average 44 minute episode
of
the TV show but there is enough to make this an enjoyable fantasy
adventure
and to see the makings of what would eventually become the action show
that
all to follow would have to be measured against.

This is excellent beginning to the best version of Hercules. Kevin Sorbo
is
perfect for the role and gives a great performance. There is wall to wall
action here and a great story to match. I recommend it to everyone. A very
high thumbs up on this one.

When I was eleven, in 1994, television was my life and books on the Greek
myths were my obsession. I must have seen this episode five times back in
'94. Each time, I felt very sad by the end. It was a great story, and
"Hera"
looked so evil & chilling. I won't ruin it by telling you the end. But the
story is basically of a town Hercules has to save from constant attacks
from
Amazon women. Sounds boring, but trust me it isn't, it has a lot of
fighting
action! Lucy Lawless (who later appears in the "Hercules" spinoff "Xena:
Warrior Princess") guest stars here. It is also an honor to have the
infamous Anthony Quinn playing the role of Zeus.

In the first of a series of TV movies that would lead up to the show,
we're introduced to Kevin Sorbo in the role he was born to play (no not
Kull the Conqueror(, Hercules. He's going to be the best man in the
wedding of Iolaus (Michael Hurst), when they decide to go off on one
more adventure together before Iolaus weds to face men-hating feminist
Amazons (I know that term is VERY redundant) who worship Hera. It
starts off well enough, but unneeded "moralizing" combined with a
cop-out ending. Some good action is able to offset that somewhat.

Eye Candy: An extra is topless for a split-second
