Heavenly Creatures

14 December 2011 9:14 PM, PST | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

Even when he hardly had the resources to do so, Peter Jackson has always been a trafficker in fantasy. Whether outlining the boundaries of a fantastic world (as he did in the Lord of the Rings trilogy) or detailing the trauma of bringing one of its inhabitants into our own (King Kong), the primary relationship of any of his films is of Jackson and the imagined, with the viewer often acting as something of a home-wrecking third party. But only once did Jackson take a really serious look at that relationship, and show with terrible clarity just how corrupting it can be. Just as Hitchcock's Vertigo provided an inverted prism to look at the master's obsessions, Heavenly Creatures is Jackson's rawest, most exciting, and most vital work, shedding a whole new light on everything that the man has done before and since.

Movie of the Week

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows

The Stars: Robert Downey Jr.Jude LawJared Harris

The Plot: Sherlock Holmes and his sidekick Dr. Watson join forces to outwit and bring down their fiercest adversary, Professor Moriarty.

The Buzz: Guy Ritchie’s career has been effectively side-tracked by the Holmes franchise, and I think that’s a good thing. I hope the trend continues. Downey Jr. and Law make for the perfect pair, and though I was disappointed when I learned, months back, that Daniel Day-Lewis had dropped out as Moriarty, I was pleased to »

There are 26 new releases out on Blu-ray this week and of those we have picked 10 we think are worth talking about. It is an interesting mix of films: a classic black and white comedy – Seven Chances starring Buster Keaton – a summer blockbuster – Rise of the Planet of the Apes – an award winning drama – Heavenly Creatures – an animated martial arts bear – Kung Fu Panda 2 – a family friendly action film – The Rocketeer –  a neighbor who is a vampire – Fright Night – and a high-kicking, limb-severing, face-punching ninja movie from the ’80s – Five Elemental Ninjas.

Let’s see which are worth owning, which are worth renting and which ones to avoid altogether.

Blu-ray: Heavenly Creatures: The Uncut Version

10 November 2011 11:03 AM, PST | Disc Dish | See recent Disc Dish news »

Blu-ray Release Date: Dec. 13, 2011

Price: Blu-ray $19.99

Studio: Lionsgate

This Blu-ray debut of Peter Jackson’s (The Frighteners) 1994 thriller movie Heavenly Creatures is extra sweet as it’s the uncut version of the film with 10 minutes not in the version released in theaters.

One of Jackson’s earlier movies, Heavenly Creatures also is the first feature film that starred Kate Winslet (Mildred Pierce).

The film stars Winslet and Melanie Lynskey (Win Win) as Juliet Hulme and Pauline Parker, teenage girls who form an unwavering bond rooted in a literary fantasy world they share. Disturbed by the intensity of the friendship, their parents separate the girls and threaten to keep them apart permanently. Angry, the girls vow to get murderous revenge. Scary? The movie is even based on a true story.

The screenplay, written by Jackson and and his Lord of the Rings partner Fran Walsh, was nominated for an Oscar. Although Heavenly Creatures didn’t win, »

Stephen King's Rose Madder to get film Adaptation

8 November 2011 5:27 AM, PST | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

Almost every Stephen King novel that has ever been written has gotten or will eventually get a feature film or TV adaptation. The guys stories are just so awesome why wouldn't anyone want to develop them into something we can watch and enjoy. It's great to see that King's 1995 book Rose Madder is finally going to get it's shot. This story has had a hell of a time trying to get to the big screen because of how odd the story is, but Palomar Pictures has taken it upon themselves to take on the challenge as part of a three-film deal with Grosvenor Park.

Rose Madder is a combination of several different elements, it's domestic saga, part fairytale and part Greek myth. The story involves a woman trying to escape from her abusively violent husband. She ends up getting a painting that she can go inside. Once she enters the »

Happy Birthday Peter Jackson!

31 October 2011 7:00 AM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

In seems fitting yet not too obvious that Peter Jackson's birthday would be on Halloween. Imagine the costume fun one could cull from his films alone?

Since today is his half century mark, we couldn't not tip our pointy Gandalf hats to the man. Whether you're counting down the days until he returns to The Shire with The Hobbit films or wishing he'd move away from Tolkien and on to greener other pastures, it's worth checking in on the official Hobbit blog from month to month (though they sadly haven't had a production video since July and those were fun.)

Do you think The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012) and The Hobbit: There and Back Again (2013) will continue the Rings Oscar streak? Perhaps you're more doubtful like me... even if The Hobbit films are great won't AMPAS voters feel that 11 Oscars in February 2004 was more than enough?

I would rank his films like so. »

Happy 50th Birthday, Peter Jackson

30 October 2011 6:46 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Peter Jackson will be a Lord for a day on the set of his current movie The Hobbit on Monday when he turns the big 5-0.

Coming to prominence in the 1980s with his cult comedy horror movies, Jackson proved his worth behind the camera for Kate Winslet's breakout film Heavenly Creatures in 1994.

But it wasn't until several years later that the Kiwi had Hollywood at his feet when he transformed J.R.R. Tolkien's classic fantasy tales into one of cinema's highest-grossing franchises.

He is currently shooting the prequel films in his native New Zealand, but the director is sure to put the camera down for a glass of champagne when he hits the milestone on the last day of October.

And in recognition of his stellar career and his milestone birthday, WENN has dug deep in Middle-Earth to find 10 fascinating facts about the moviemaker.

- Jackson is obsessed with aviation - he collects models of airplanes from World War I.

- When he left school at the age of 17, the director worked as a photo lithographer at a Wellington newspaper for seven years.

- His films have won 20 Academy Awards altogether - 17 for The Lord of the Rings trilogy and three for King Kong.

- The joy of helming The Lord of the Rings trilogy was overshadowed by the death of his parents, who both passed away during filming of the franchise.

- On his first feature film, cult sci-fi horror Bad Taste, Jackson did all the special effects and make-up.

- He was ranked number seven in Empire magazine's Greatest Directors Ever countdown in 2005.

- Filming on The Hobbit was stalled earlier this year when Jackson had to undergo emergency surgery to treat a perforated ulcer.

- He was knighted in his native New Zealand last year. The honour was sanctioned by the country's head of state, Queen Elizabeth II.

- Jackson's wife Fran Walsh has worked on the screenplays of all of Jackson's movies apart from Bad Taste and has taken home three Oscars for her contributions.

- Jackson owns three film production companies; WingNut Films, Weta Limited and Three Foot Six. »

Two And A Half-men Neighbor Enters House

Two And A Half-men Neighbor Enters House

Actress Melanie Lynskey is about to pop in on the cast of House. Let’s hope she uses the front door of the hospital instead of climbing over the balcony as her cooky Two and Half Men character, Rose, so often did. I miss the banter between Charlie and Rose, don’t you?

The Kiwi actress, which is a cute way of saying she’s from New Zealand, broke into cinema with 1994′s controversial picture Heavenly Creatures. She was adorable in Ever After, and just as quirky as ever in films like Sweet Home Alabama and Up In the Air. I’ve also been told she’s my celebrity look alike, but I’m sure you couldn’t care less about that! On to the real news!

For the Fox medical drama, Lynskey will act in an episode scheduled for early next year. »

Morgan Spurlock super-sizes product placement

14 October 2011 2:31 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

The man behind Super Size Me has made a documentary about product placement – and funded it by featuring a fruit juice. Here, he reveals the murky world of movie sponsorship

Two years ago, Morgan Spurlock rang Abercrombie & Fitch to offer them his services as a model. The response wasn't wholly positive. "Have you looked in the mirror?" the company's press agent asked. "You're pale. You're out of shape. You're not very good-looking. You have a moustache. You're going bald." That offending 'tache shakes with laughter at the memory. "She broke down every flaw for me. She said I was an ugly person. She was very, very offended by my offer."

So Spurlock – pale skin quickly thickening – returned to his phone book and called more companies hoping to cut a deal; 600 in all, of which he scored with 15. This 2% success rate left him with a "tremendous sense of despair", a heightened »

Blu-Ray Review: The Frighteners – Early Confirmation of Peter Jackson’s Genius

10 October 2011 12:21 AM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

It should always be counted a massive tragedy that Michael J Fox was robbed of the opportunity to make more films by his health, because he made some of the best family films of his generation, in the Back to the Future Trilogy, as well as other classics like Teen Wolf, The Secret of My Suce$s and Doc Hollywood. Okay, so not everything he touched was gold, but the actor who rescued Marty McFly from the evils of being ginger and unfunny (from Eric Stoltz of course) has such an easy charisma that even now when he appears in cameos and brief guest runs on TV (where his career trajectory has found comfort since 1996 and Spin City) it’s hard not to love him.

And just before he stopped making movies (aside from voice work for Stuart Little and Atlantis) the same year that Spin City arrived on the small screen, »

Greatest Horror Movies Ever Made: Part 3: Greatest Australian / New Zealand Horror Films

8 October 2011 9:53 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Australia may not have an overabundance of horror films but they’ve managed to produce some quality genre pictures. The recent success of the acclaimed documentary Not Quite Hollywood has shed light on a much overlooked aspect of Aussie genre filmmaking, from lowbrow slashers to twisted thrillers and gross-out horror comedies. Back in the 70′s a number of prominent filmmakers began to develop a film movement that would eventually see the successes of such films as Mad Max and The Last Wave. It was during this time that Australian cinema as a whole experienced resurgence due to increased governmental funding and eventually gave way to what international film critics termed the “Australian New Wave” or the “Golden Age of Australian cinema”.

New Zealand hasn’t produced many horror films over the years, but those it has given birth to are remarkably strong entries. In fact one of the biggest filmmakers »

Kate Winslet

6 October 2011 4:06 PM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

With six Oscar nominations by the age of 35, it's nice to see Kate Winslet falling on her lovely, intelligent, earnest face once in a while

One thing to be said for Contagion is that it's unlikely to bring Kate Winslet another award. Alternatively, there might be an award for anyone who can come up with a good reason why she made Contagion, a picture that takes a vast subject and reduces it to amazing banality. Yes, it is by the same Steven Soderbergh who made Sex, Lies and Videotape, and if you recall the journal he wrote about the making of that film, and the brave new world of independent projects he foresaw, this is a sad comedown.

But that's not Winslet's fault. Perhaps she did this confident no prizes would be offered. For I take her to be a reasonable, good-humoured actor who knows in her heart how silly »

Heavenly Creatures Blu-ray Review

3 October 2011 9:00 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Peter Jackson made quite an impression long before Frodo and Sam set out to set fire to a piece of jewellery, with some expertly crafted and inventive low budget horrors with Braindead (renamed Dead Alive in the States) a choice landmark on my own particular cinematic horizon.

Stepping from the gore soaked ruins of the early Jackson pantheon we find ourselves at a very different place in 1994, a place in which the director set his sights on a story rooted in the controlled hysteria of adolescence and marked Jackson’s maturation as a masterful storyteller. It would prove Jackson’s ‘breakthrough’ film whatever such terms mean to people, and it showed that beyond the wit, invention and playful nature of Bad Taste and Braindead this was a director capable of powerful dramatic cinema and though it remains something of a curio in the filmography Heavenly Creatures retains its power and its charm to this day. »

Close up: Sean Penn - action hero?

29 September 2011 8:50 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Sean Penn asked Hugo Chávez to push for the release of Us hikers Joshua Fattal and Shane Bauer. But was he even more involved than that? ...

The big story

The Iranian night rushed against Penn's skin as he landed the base jump on the roof of the prison. The first guard heard nothing. The second too was fair game - quickly collapsing under a blow from a hand that had held Academy Awards twice over. It was sweet and lowdown work. War made easy.

The hostages greeted him with amazement: "I loved you in Mystic Ri-" "Shhhhhh." Penn hissed. "Follow me or you're a dead man walking."

None of which happened of course. But when you read headlines like "Sean Penn aided release of Us hikers" (and watch a lot of action movies) it's easy to let your imagination run wild.

In fact, Penn was in the news this week »
