At the time, there was a lot of publicity about the apparently gung-ho tactics of the Victorian police: they seemed to be shooting everybody who looked at them. While a lot of cop shows tend to focus on the actual criminal investigation, or even a relationship between characters, Carson has given us something completely different here: it's not often policemen are depicted as real people, and, after a fatal shooting, one formerly ambitious cop is having uncontrollable nightmares and temper tantrums. But are they related to the shooting, or an upcoming trial, at which he is the only witness who can provide solid testimony against a local crime boss? As Jane Halifax is brought in to investigate, she finds herself up against a wall of coverups as the police force is seemingly rallying around its members; Internal Investigations, meanwhile, is looking into rumours that the cop's partner has criminal connections, and it looks like they and Halifax have each got the opposite end of the same piece of string... Not the best HALIFAX episode, but hugely effective, and a definite anti-advertisement for budding policepeople!! Colin Friels is superb, and Belinda McClory, in a supporting role, gives glimpses of future brilliance. 7/10.
